Petrol hoses can break up inside

I'd wondered about that, but they look in decent nick. It wouldn't cost much to replace it all though, so I might just do that anyway.

Nice Rover RobT, well bought that looks a nice straight little car.

Its a 214 right?

Yep, a 1.4 8 valve so has a dizzying 74bhp. Despite that it feels plenty quick enough. I nearly bought it last October when it was on eBay, but got distracted by other stuff (namely the Jaguar of much brokeness, bloody thing!)

Edit:

A few more pics. I don't normally like bright red cars, but it seems to suit it and the paint isn't pogged. Much prefer the front end on these than the later 25s.

Povvo interior is a bit grim looking, but tidy enough. Keep fit everything and blanking plate city. One job to sort is the blower. It only works on 3 and 4 so the car is either arctic or boiling.

Some odd rust going on here at the boot hinges.

I hope it doesn't live up to the last 3 letters of its number plate. Are 8v Ks considered more rugged than 16v Ks?

Posted

Not sure myself, but the last 1.4 8v I owned long term suffered HGF at 60,000. I won't be keeping this long so hopefully it'll hold out for a while.

Another MOT pass for the Octavia, yay! Another clean sheet (apart from a slightly manky front pipe starting to go at the flexi joint but I'll accept that). Very happy with my shonky* unreliable* heap of VAGshite lol.

Does our very own TooSavvy own a copper coloured 57 reg one by any chance?

He has an old Corolla IIRC, his Savvy was black and is no longer with us.

Good idea?

Roll up! Roll up! If anyone hasn't noticed, I'm doing a traditional AutoShite 2017 calendar order for the technocripples. See the calendar order post for details.

Good idea

I hope you're missing the * - it's a bloody awful idea!

My van failed its first MOT at more than 100k miles because it's brakes were knackered and it got off lightly compared with some other light commercial vehicles which are utterly fucked at 3 never mind 4 years with tight fleet managers cutting corners.

No, because then some new cars will have to wait another year before they get a single new bulb or tyre!

Decided another day out was in order, so treated Mrs DW with a trip to glorious Fishguard. We ate lunch and watched the ferry clagging up before departure. Who said romance is dead?

Then we went to explore an Iron Age fort and an old chapel.

I couldn't get the ZX in this shot. Aberaeron on the way home.

Bloody lovely day, though I still need to change the fuel filter on the ZX. It runs out of puff if you absolutely floor it uphill. More than usual.

An hour spent fixerating the irritating small faults with the Mondeo this afternoon. Sorted out the loose trim round the seat with some cable ties. Not a perfect fit but unless you were looking for it you wouldn't know.

Some idle fucker had replaced the fuel filter fairly recently, which tallies with what the previous owner told me he'd had it serviced by a garage. What they'd forgot to do though was bolt the fuel filter to the bulkhead so it was swinging in the wind. They'd also managed to lose the bolts. Again fixed with some cable ties.

A bit of creaking when you opened the doors sorted by tightening the check strap. Daft how small, no cost jobs like this can make a difference!

They are having yet another consultation about maybe doing it sometime, perhaps 2018.

I don't think it's a good idea mainly because brakes tyres and bulbs don't last 3 years without someone checking them. The rest of the vehicle is usually fine at that age.

I'm horrified at the idea of 50cc chinese mopeds not needing a test for 4 years though, my opinion is that peds and small bikes should be tested from 1 year old because so many of them are dangerously faulty by then and some of them don't even last 3 years to qualify for a first test at all.

Poking around the Hiace today and wondered vaguely why the plastic cover on the driver's door step was loose.  So I lifted it up.

ARSE.

Fortunately, by putting the door seal and plastic cover back on, this problem has now been permanently fixed.

Alright, yes, I'll be calling on my friendly local welder soon.

No idea, all hearsay as I say. Still waiting for the actual prognosis, I still think coil is most likely.

After all that, turns out it was nothing more than dirty plugs in the end apparently.  The garage who 'serviced' it seem to have thoroughly ballsed the entire thing up, not enough oil and not checking basics like that suggests a company to avoid!  This is why I do my own servicing.

I have often mentioned that most cars in New Zealand are used JDM.

Some figures for 2016 to back up that statement. We have NO car industry left here, only sales.

New cars sold, top 10 manufacturers.

1    Ford Ranger.............8478   Yes, I know it is not a real car !

2    Corolla......................6274

3    Toyota Hi Lux............6187

4    Holden Colorado.......3739

5    Toyota Rav4..............3612

6    Mits. Triton................3182

7    Nissan Navara..........3093

8    Kia Sportage.............3016

9    Mazda CX5...............2841

10  Hyundai Tuscon........2650

                    Total           43072

And then there were the others, some of whom would sell in single figures !

Used Imports..from anywhere, mostly Japan.

Commercials..................10967

cars..............................149526

                    Total         160490

And then there were the private imports which are not shown !!

That is the reason we get so many strange JDM cars here.

Fixing little jobs make all the difference. Well worth a few hours.

I have only ever seen one mk3 Mondeo where the fuel filter bracket wasn't kippered!

After a plug change I guess it's now running right?

If so, that's good to hear! All Vauxhalls are shit ... but around that era they're bloody tough things.

Just for reference, these are the plugs back in Sept 2015. I can't remember which is which, so there must be duplications. I guess that's a good thing as it means they were all pretty even! Back then, as they looked in ok and had been changed a few years before and not many miles between (double check the service book for last changed), I decided that they didn't need changing.

Just a heads up that the reduced bin at my local Lidl was full of car stuff this morning.

Wipers / bulbs / seat covers and more.
