Just had a long chat with Paul from Specialist Cars re my dollop. It seems that the starting is fixed (fingers, toes, arse cheeks crossed!) and they can get the discs skimmed... at the local Ferrari dealer! For £102 per corner! Plus VAT of course. It is getting stupid now: the car has been gone for eight weeks and will be another week at least. All that we 'know' is properly fixed is a fuel gauge bulb and the clock which I bought separately and had sent to them. It is booked in for a service and MOT on the 12th of September and it is looking like there will be no point in it coming home before that date!

I tried to get an update on the bill from him, but failed. His idea of 'not horrendous' and mine probably differ somewhat!

That is utterly beautiful in a "all of a sudden I'm reading Max Power and dreaming of Porsche Mint Green Astra GTEs" again.

As a few of you may have read I had engine failure on my saph, today I have stripped the ancillaries off, drained it down and unbolted everything ready to be pulled when I have the replacement, i thought I'd look down the exhaust ports to see if anything was untoward, no1 exhaust valve was missing completely

I am intrigued at what failed etc, i am planning to do a post mortem on it if I get chance when I've got the replacement in

Posted

If the camchain tensioner wheel hasn't collapsed then the missing valve is the likely culpret, wouldn't be the first one I'd seen.

Posted

The Chain tensioner wheel was replaced as was the timing chain and guides, i havn't come across valves getting up and fucking off randomly on these, every day is a school day

Posted

It's not that common, but I've personally dealt with a snapped valve trashing the engine at least five times in the last 20 years, three were catastrophic on the road failures and the other two were both "good" engines supplied to fit.

Chain failure most common, followed by serious HGF and then big ends on these imo.

Our old Metro dropped a valve. No idea why. Made some impressive carnage, especially as Mrs DW drove it home...

I think I've f*cked up. I did about 230 miles in the RAV today. Jeepers those seats are crap! I have many aches. Next week, I have to drive it about 600 miles in two days. I may have to drive it another 300 miles later this week. Why am I so shit at buying cars?! Why don't I own something GOOD at motorways?!

Citroen xm ?

Yes, selling the XM does seem like a stupid idea now. I'll never find another that cheap!

That's exactly how I feel, theres none for less than £600, and that one had no driveshafts!

Still, it's a tick on the list of stuff experienced! Lanky Tim's xm seems a bargain, and it needs a rear strut!

My mate Hubert came out to play today and gave me a (large) hand to sort the garage out. It is now two car suitable! MX5 is right in the far corner and so wedged in that there is no way on Gods green Earth that I can get the little bastard out on my own without duffing up both bumpers! All my tools etc are all 'close to hand' as is my jack and stands and gear. The Bentley, should it ever come back from the dealers will fit in there fine and the Kia will be a piece of piss!

Good. :)

Couldn't start the 825 yesterday, wouldn't turn over even after half an hour of jump starting efforts. So I put the charger on it.

Fine now.

That's all. I really must up my miserable old shitter game.

I think the only sensible solution is to buy another car. What could possibly go wrong?

What were you using to jump it? My battery recently failed on my 2.5 KV6, it would only start if charged right up, anything less than fully charged and it didn't want to know. The RAC man commented on the battery not being that bad, but it wasn't good enough so just bought a new one which is very good now.

Hmm... I have finished all my commissions and just have the other project stuff to work on so I might have a half day free tomorrow and might get the Renault inspected.  Maybe.  Perhaps.  I don't want to do it but I do want to know what's wrong with it.  We'll see how the weather is and go from there, I think.

The Alfa excelled itself again on the run home from work this evening.  I'm actually going to miss this car when it goes to car heaven (probably in 5 weeks' time when the MOT runs out) - apart from the tired clutch (and hopeless turning circle, but TADT,S) it's been brilliant and I really enjoy driving it.

I've decided. I want a Rover 600. This is clearly the ideal vehicle. I shall waste a day searching for a Rover 600.

And i thought i was bad!

I collected the Astras replacement last night, my mums owned it 8 years and only done 20k in that time, taking the mileage up to 27000 miles, it hasn't been cleaned since before christmas either so i know what I'll be doing tonight.

To be honest it's pretty dull and modern but i really can't complain, it now means I'm mobile again and being a 1.4 TDCi it will cost sod all to run and is only £30 a year to tax meaning i can afford another toy easier too.

Why does the Alfa have to go to car heaven?

While searching for a rover 600 Mr wobbler sees an advert for a Daewoo espero in pogweasel pink with auto box and buys that instead

That black diesel does look a nice buy. Is it wrong to rule out because of the colour? I prefer that grotty blue one in Birmingham, just because it's blue.
