Happy days, just taken a deposit on the Merc!

Selespeed??

Christ no, I'm not that bloody brave.

The '54 plate Alfa 156 Veloce from the 'tat' thread?

Posted

No, but that will be given SRS consideration once the Merc has been collected/paid for in full.

Now I have the tins of sample paint all that it's done is make deciding which one to go with that much harder :/ Suggestions have been bandied about for doing it two tone purple, but I'm not convinced.

I bought a secondhand servo off eBay for the P6 a week or two ago. Finally got round to fitting it this weekend, and it's knackered. Plumbed it all in, then when I started the engine it kicked the brake pedal upwards. In so doing, it appears to have blown the seals on the master cylinder, as I now have no brakes at all. GR9. At least I managed to score a rebuild kit off the Bay for £7.90 including delivery, so not too bad. I'm wondering whether to try to repair the servo I have (repair kits are more than I paid for the thing in the first place), try my luck with another secondhand servo, or fork out £75 for a brand new one.

In better news, the Sirion sold this morning, to a pleasant enough woman who offered £20 less than the full asking, which was close enough for me. The Laguna sold on eBay last night too - not for very much, but it was never going to be an easy car to sell. Winning bidder is in Wisbech so not a million miles away, and has already been in touch to arrange collection, so fingers crossed.

Ran the Sierra through a cheap Tesco carwash yesterday, and it actually cleans up pretty well. I might take it down to the jet wash one evening this week and have a proper go - especially since it's now filthy again as the thunderstorm that went over yesterday seems to have deposited half of the Sahara desert on the car. I've been running around in the old crate all weekend and I'm rather enjoying it - it's looking more and more like a keeper.

Bought a W126 300SE Merc today- saw a 560SEC at the auctions on friday and haven't slept since. The 300Se is the same colour, and is the same car if i kneel down and just look at the front.

The Ultimate fuel experiment continues with the injected Porsche getting better & better mpg,

but the carburettor Scirocco appears (on it's first full tank) to be significantly worse.

Just taken a dipper on the Lupo, should be going in the next couple of days. Then I can tax the Scirocco :D

/\

Winner.

I faffed about this afters deciding whether or not to bid or just hit the BIN button on a bloody cheap C*rs* with the rather ace 1.5TD engine. By the time I'd got out of the shower and logged on to eBastard it had gone.

Just bought a 64 s type jag off my neighbour, so I can now re live those old sweeney car chases!

I'm on my way...

I tried the fogs on this last night, as the headlights are about as useful as the brakes and heater :( and one worked. Actually drove with the lights on tonight and found... no foglamp at all. So about as reliable as the brakes too!

Generally I'll always favour originality but, if you're going to modify, that has to be the way forward!

Norwich now has its very own Great Wall dealer. For the moment they seem to only be selling the Steed, which is a slightly shite-looking pickup that appears to be a kind of modern equivalent to the Tata Loadbeta. Don't know if they've sold any yet - I certainly haven't seen any of their demonstrators out on a test drive. Might go in one day and nab a brochure / price list just out of curiosity.

I was surprised to see that, at the NMG garage I think?

There's a Crate Wail dealer in Stafford. They flog high'n'dry as well.

There's a forecourt to avoid...

I have learned three things today:

1) cellulose paint dissolves gloss rollers, which I should have figured out what with the solventy paint and the plasticyfoam roller. Goes on much better with a brush and settles out much smoother. It's an absolute delight to work with, though that might be the celly fumes talking.

2) Aconite is a very purpley purple and also awesome. This might also be the celly fumes talking.

3) The nodding tiger (made in Hong Kong circa. 1970) I got from eBay is very creepy, but used to be very orange.

The Nova got its first trip on the open road in 5 years today, 9 miles up the road to be assessed for MOT-worthyness. It was a noisy, rattly, squeaky trip but everything worked and it made it without drama so I'm quite pleased. It still has the lumpy idle it developed on Sunday and was stuttering a bit up hills but otherwise it ran great, picked up well and had a decent bit of oomph when pushed which I wasn't expecting. The expert opinion is that the carb's inhaled some crud and just needs cleaning out.

I was surprised to find the mechanic did actually take it up the road to his MOT chap - was expecting him to cancel the booking once he saw the state of it. Early signs are...not great. It's a little rustier than it appears and needs 4 seperate patches to pass, the two predictable sill patches plus some hidden rot in the front end which he did say you would have to know to look for (which I did not). This was not including the battery tray which it turns out won't fail the MOT as it's not structural...the initial estimate for getting it through the MOT was a fair bit more than I was planning on, never mind the battery tray, so this may be the end of the road for me on this one, but he's going to assess it properly tomorrow and we'll plan the next step.

On the plus side, he praised my brake repairs, my concept of mushy brakes is not the same as everyone elses as it turns out, they do work OK when they bite so he thought they were fine :D And he was impressed with the overall condition of the car so there may be hope yet.

No offence me old teapot, but that looks bloody horrible.

The car, or the tiger? I'm expecting a lot of folks to be offended by the colour of the purple. Oh, and the finish on the purple is pretty shocking right now, I am aware of this, more work will be done to it tomorrow.

Posted

I hate to say it, but the purple looks abysmal.

I think you're on the super-fast route to the weighbridge brush painting it as well. There's a reason car painting is expensive, and it's not because they use better quality brushes... Ah well, you've gone this far, so there's bugger all left to lose. Carry on. Hopefully it'll somehow turn out well.

Posted

Have faith, I'm not attacking any of the rest of the car until I can buy all the materials I need and I'm sure I can get a good finish on this panel first. At least it's rust free and watertight and if the worst comes to the worst I can always pay someone else to rebeige it.

Posted

I'd say get rid of the go shitier brown bit and paint the rest beige again.

I have a brand new compressor in the box - you'd need to borrow an airline and a gun - but I'd let you borrow it (as long as it is returned clean and tidy) if it stopped you painting that gorgeous car purple!

Well... I brought it on myself, I'm surprised it took so long. XD
