I looked at an m3 last week that turned out to be cat B even though it had a VIC. Dunno how it got back on the road but would know doubt be a world of pain when I tried to insure it or sell it.

Posted

The seller does not know what the main damage was but thinks the front may have been changed (now has minor damage). Cat C is the worst of the two repairable categories and was in 2001 so the car was not that old and therefore could be quite heavily damage. I am not happy to risk it with a complicated car like this.

That's not an expensive, complicated, BMW engined Cat C write off.

Took mrs fp's rs turbo for test today, failed on a front bearing with too much play that's a job for tomorrow as long as it isn't peeing it down, it did get an amusing advisory of "exhaust noisy" it's noisy because its got a 3" bore mongoose one box system from the turbo going to a 4" tailpipe, never had that advisory before

Haha a big exhaust is a compulsory fit item on an 80s performance hatch, this one is performance orientated rather than just to add noise, the noise is just a side effect

I (badly) over shot a 360 and went onto the grass where someone had placed an old steel wheel to protect the timing cables - I ran the bugger over ! fortunately the battery had ran out on the video camera and no one need witness my outburst of language. annoyingly I was probably on my quickest lap up to that point.

Less than a month of 2CVing left. :( Plans to get saving for a new bodyshell have been dealt a blow by borrowing this Ami. Now the strong pound and sheer grin factor have left me thinking it wouldn't be so bad to park the 2CV up and get an Ami instead.

Now that´s the ideal fleet for you! Make it happen!

After the aborted Clio collection on Saturday I phoned Peter James today, and they'll refund me £73 of the £89 I paid on Friday so I'm only 15 quid down, plus the £24 for the train ticket so not too bad. The Baccara I viewed at the weekend was also borked, another with early onset HGF. A quick peek in the expansion tank whilst the seller was fetching the documents showed a frothy mass. Shame as the rest of it was pretty good. I did consider buying it as a project to break my head gasket replacing cherry, but I can't be arsed at the minute. So in the meantime I bought this JRG giffermatic 440 today

The seller sounds a nice old boy, the P4 in the pic is his, and he's a mechanic by trade so has maintained it himself, recent work including a new battery, alternator and radiator. There's no immobiliser or alarm either, which is good as the 460 I had gave me no end of trouble on that front. Should be collecting it after work on Wednesday. That's my Shitefest transport sorted, assuming I keep it that long.

Grrr... I have money burning a hole in my pocket and i still can't find anything i want to buy! All the cars that turn up on ebay are either tired , rubbish or so damn overpriced now.

Everyone seems to be a car dealer now, buying stuff and chucking it straight back on ebay again with a marked up price, other sellers see the prices they are asking and then think theirs is worth the same, and people are stupid enough to pay it.

When i wasn't looking for a car i saw loads of stuff that i fancied!

Yeah, and someone you know will rip that to pieces for spares if you get bored (the 460 I mean).

Love that Volvo. I've had both a 440 and 460 in the past and they are cracking cars.

Could possibly be interested when you come to sell Rob...guessing it's a 1.7 being the earlier shape and auto?

Posted

Trig , what you need is a Spartan kit car . Already got a pinto and a 5 speed😄

Nice one Rob, those Volvos do tempt me every now and again. I'd be interested to hear how you get on with a giffermatic one.

Is the volvo a cvt or conventional auto? Would love a crack in a cvt

You're all missing the point... what colour is the tailgate? There may still be a blue 440 in a local car breakers here... ;)

Amen to that. I think the only way to get anything decent now is word of mouth. Everything is fucked, lashed up or massively over priced. Too many folk watching wheeler dealers I guess. I had 3 grand to buy something interesting and found nothing that really floated my boat over a 6 week period that didn't need a lot of work so got drunk and bought the CL on  whim.. It used to be £2500 could get something interesting but that doesn't seem to be the case anymore. I really fancied a 16v Mk2 Astra GT but as I found out, good luck finding a half decent one of those for 2 grand.

There seems to be a few early 6 series and 7 series for decent money and they're great cars as long as they're not rotten. That 728 I posted on the ebay thread would be a belter once you removed the chrome arches.

Once (if) I sell the CL I recon I'm going to be on the lookout for an E12 Based 6 series because they are daseX.

That looks the biz! Hoping it comes with a brown velour interior to compete the look.

Here in Austria it´s the same, only in a different price-range. A lot of private sellers try to make a profit with selling cars they recently bought. Many of them are not that good condition-wise. It´s very difficult to find decent cars under 8000€ that are not small or french.  Only I seem to buy cars for too much money and sell them in better condition than before for a lot less.  :? I guess I am not a very talented wheeler-dealer.

My daily driver is running fine at the moment, I am very happy with it. But when I look at it, I am annoyed by the paint-difference between the new wings and the old door/front valance. Look what I mean:

Maybe I´ll just paint it green with a brush.

Yep, 1.7 normal auto.  The interior is the best bit, beige and caramac everywhere.  I'll get better shots when I collect it.

What's weird, Lukas, is that it looks like the front wing matches the windscreen surround but the rest of the side of the car matches the roof.  A friend of mine had an Escort with this issue where the dark grey metallic panels looked different shades even though they were all the panels it came from the factory with.  Something about paint direction and dark metallics.

Posted

Funny, isnt it?

Both wings are new, painted with the correct paint-code. But as the car lived almost 25 years in Vienna, I don´t think a lot of the colour on it is originally from 1989. A dent was repaired, some scratches painted, a small accident happened and so on, so I guess most of the paint on the panels are of different age. Maybe I´ll paint it sand-beige or green or maybe even have it wrapped. Maybe like that:

Fiat 126 has passed its MoT again - advisory on front wheel bearing and back brakes are at final adjustment. Otherwise, as good as gold. For a Fix it again tomorrow, it never seems to surprise me just how cheap it is to run.
