The DAF is alive! Is running and working for the first time in about 9 months. boob-woo.gif

Mucho mucho Grande Pantusos to Volksy for his help in getting it sorted.

Will be going in for its MOT next week. Hopefully will not need much. Hopefully.

Mazda is now sol. Went to a young guy on a local car club, so I'm glad it will be used and not scrapped. Of course the day after I cancelled the insurance and SORNed it the starter motor problem vanished and its been fine ever since.

In retrospect I didn't fully think this one through. Oh well, means I have room for another car now

Isn't that Cavette. Level is fine, belt tension is fine. Something's seriously amiss as it's taking an age to raise itself up as well. BX mojo is at a very low ebb at the moment.

Sounds like a gubbed HP pump; did you replace the flat accumulator sphere?

A little before Christmas I was offered a later 5 bearing diesel engine for my Land Rover. Difficulty with it was location. Thetford. In steps a friend who was planning to visit family over the break. He collected it, paid for it, and took it to his home in Lincoln. I nipped over to colect it yesterday, to discover his engine crane had developed a fault. So we rolled i in to a trailer, supported the now angled rear, and attempted to walk it into the back of the Land Rover. It was just too heavy, so I decided to remove the head of this £50 engine. To remove the head involves removing the injectors. Each on slid out like they were fitted a week ago...... Despite the surface corrosion of being sat outside, they were indeed new(ish)! There's about £100 worth already..... Off with it's head, and despite a small soft lip in the bore, exaggerated by carbon build up, the internals look good too. Clean rockers, no major oil leaks, and although the sump is kenked, (I have spares!!) it's going to make a great engine. I am rather pleased! Thanks to all concerned. :)

I can haz new motor. Purchased off Maxpower this morning. No epic road trip or pictures to support said adventure as it involved a tube, a travelcard and about an hour of my time..

The beast

2.0 this time which makes the car much better and it is also the phase 2 v40 meaning new and improved !

Full leather and heated seats means luxury can now be had.

Before there were blanking plates now I behold the trip computer, cruise control and air con.

Things to do include cleaning bonnet catch, fixing drivers door lock, change wipers and stick it in for a test.

Good result there, Albert.

Right, more of yesterday's jaunt:

Sport Shite Chris very kindly came to Cavcraft to pick me up and I was suitably impressed with his pocket rocket Alfa. 40 miles or so later in excelsior company we were outside Sporty Towers and the new steed was sat there blocking his garage.

One set of jump leads, pliers on the knackered bonnet pull cable and some ad-hoc clearance of the car interior we were in business. Started up and sounded well so I lobbed the sat nav in and off I went. Big mistake not taking my sun glasses as the driver's sun visor had jumped ship, luckily I'm quite tall so perched on the seat with my eyes peering under the roof so I wasn't dazzled by the sun.

Not knowing if there was enough juice in it to get it back and not wanting to stop in case the battery was knackered I made it all the way to the garage it was booked in for an MOT at some 32 miles from Chris's. Made it back without doing 30mph on the motorway and without running out of juice. JACKAKNACKANORY!

So what did I discover on the journey home?

Previously left open window or dodgy window seal meant a small pool of water in the rear seating floor area, ala VW Passat design fault. This meant misted up windows so heater on full go and sunroof and rear window open. This would have been a nicer experience had the thermostat been working and thus had hot air, instead of tepid. No problem, it'll be easy to change.

Slight vibration between 65-70mph, this'll be the wheel balance in my experience, another easy job. I took advantage of Chris's special offer on some spare Cav steels with decent 195/60/14s, these were lobbed in the boot for future use.

One wheel trim has found a new home somewhere, again not a big problem and adds to the 'Roadwars' look of the car LOL. Whilst I stopped for fuel and restarted the car a RED LIGHT OF DOOM came up on the dash, which would indicate low brake fluid level. Can't see any patches under the car or anything to suggest some sort of leakage so hopefully a top up is all that's required. Lacquer peel on the bonnet is as bad as Sport said, if I get the chance I'll see if I can rub the whole thing down and piddle about with some spray.

The engine sounded and ran GR12. These 8V things are ace, the 1.8 pulls well enough but is a bit rougher feeling on acceleration and not as quick as the 2.0 but really quite and smooth when holding any speed in top gear. They're also pretty bullet proof and are 'nono-interferance' engines I believe so if the cam belt goes you're laughing.

Since getting it back and going to start it again it appears the battery has gone for a Burton but I have a spare which I'm charging and I can weigh the old one in. For the money (price of the car) I cannot argue, and for a small outlay it should be back on the road and doing a good service. I'm not complaining about the above faults either, Chris is a star and the car was scrap money plus as he said too good for the bridge of doom. It'll never be worth a fortune but hopefully will go back on the road.

Yup. Accumulator has been changed. Made no difference at all. Also bunged a second-hand pump on, which also made no difference at all. I do know that the regulator has an issue (ball bearing seating possibly) so will try and do something about that at the weekend, when I'm lucky enough to have some BX chums visiting.

Cav looks good Billy. Nice save.

Found some grot on the Rover of Doom today - looks like the NSF arch liner has become loose at some point and has allowed all sorts of crap to get in behind it and sit there, which has rotted the bottom of the wing out from the inside. Fortunately the grot is in the bottom of the wing rather than in the sill, and wings are bolt-on on these, so I should get away with plodding it up and painting over it.

Also fitted a new fuel pump to the Volvo - it had been using the Facet pump off the Skoda, but I'd nicked that for the DS. So I bought one of those generic £20 electric pumps off the Bay, and it seems to do the job fine. I really must get that car sorted this year, especially since it's its 40th birthday in October.

Then I had an abortive attempt to top up the gearbox fluid in the CX - the plug uses a square drive which I'd been assuming would be the same as a 3/8" socket drive, but it's actually slightly smaller than that and I haven't got anything that fits. Actually that's not quite true, I have a large flathead screwdriver which fits perfectly across the corners, but I can't get enough leverage on it to undo the plug. So I'm probably going to have to buy a special tool for the job. Arse.

Posted

Wuv - that sounds the same size as the sump plug on the BX. I ended up buying one of the special tools for a few quid on Ebay. Frustrating though!

Unless you have a spare 3/8 drive/extension and an angle grinder...

Nice one for saving this lovely Cav, Billy. They really are great cars - easy to mend, nice to drive, cheap to run and incredibly practical. Everyone should own one at least once IMO.

In Czech at the moment, the Escort is getting there. Putting front suspension back together now, got new wings and it's now solid.

Still need to do loads of work, but it should be alive before summer :-)

I'd post pictures, but this PC is all in Czech and I can't work out how to grab links :(

I follow this guy on twitter and he seems really sound. They source cars for customers, negotiate discounts on their behalf etc.

Anyway he's advertising a job , which is perfect for people who spend all day looking at cars on the internet. I thought it might be of some interest to people on here. I'm not sure how many Talbot Solara's he's asked to source mind you.

Have been for a run out in the 309 today as I tackled a few chores. It is growing on me. Sunroof has been successfully sealed (though I daren't open it - it's the handle that leaks as the piss-poor design can't really cope with the pressure put on it to open/close the roof), pinking seems to be banished and the exhaust hasn't fallen off for several weeks now. I'm pricing up an entire replacement - £87 but there seems to be some supply issues with the downpipe. I'm wondering if that's why the system fitted doesn't really seem right for the car.

It really does feel sprightly and fun, though I'm sad to report that the Isuzu Piazza clock that was superglued to the centre console has broken free. I'll try and sort that out when I replace the speedo cable.

Mind, IIRC the regulator is unlikely to be fucking up the steering; the feed for the steering does not pass through the regulator instead Pump > FDV > Pinion Valve > Ram. Might be worth checking there is not excessive leakback to the reservoir though in case something is leaking internally and hogging demand.

Also worth looking at the rubber pump feed pipe, they do perish and suck air; a length of (clean!) garden hose is a good temporary replacement for testing purposes. Do you know the providence of the s/h pump?

Hope that helps...

This is actual News 24. A feature on BBC News website showing the work of forensics. Some prime chod in at this crime scene, I particularly want the 740 complete with missing wheel trim. Can anyone identify the dark red thing behind the green Metro?

Looks like a first generation Seat Toledo to me. When was the last time you saw one of those on the roads?

I had one of those once - drove just like a Golf!

DAF is in for its MOT today. It wont pass but at least I will have an idea of what I need to do before the retest in the next 2 weeks.

True to form, I was driving in when I heard a banging noise I had not heard before. Odd, I don't remember it doing that. What can that be? I thought to myself, 'Did I have the front O/S wheel off? No, its not been off' so continued driving along and the banging continued.

Suddenly remembered I had taken that wheel off and swiftly pulled over into the Co-Op car park. Yup, wheel nuts are loose and the wheel is about to fall off.

Made a quick call to my mate who pops over with the wheel brace out of his garage but this is not the first time this has happened (which actually proved to be an advantage as I knew the noise). I MUST do up the wheel as soon as the car hits the floor.

Peugeot "wiggling-doors-trick" FTW. 407 HDi this time. She (one of the neighbours) put the drivers window down and it wouldn't go up again. She held the drivers door switch in the up position, and I slowly opened the front passenger door. ENGAGE! Window went up. I did not, however, offer to fix it properly. French electrics are great for driving you up the wall.

Took the Montego in yesterday to get it tuned up. I changed the ECU for a re-con one which I think has sorted the mis-fire/hot start problems, but I now need the garage to do the rest and check to see if the problem has definitely gone. Will call them later to check on progress....

And I noticed the BX battery light stays on for a bit when first started and on the move, so I swiftly bought a new regulator off ebay last night (belt is tight so I'm hoping it's just the brushes). I need this one to work what with the Monty out of commission!

I'm just ignoring my BX for the time being.

Got a new speedo cable for the Peugeot through from GSF today though. Was slightly worried that it said "Peugeot 106" on it, but it seems to do the trick. Will be nice to know how fast I'm going in it! Still no news on exhaust supply though. Frustrating. I'm frankly amazed at how tricky getting some very normal bits is for this car. I get the feeling it's hinting at what a nightmare getting bits is going to be for cars going forward. In the 1960s, there was a fair chance that one distributor would fit several different types of car for instance!

Oh and the oil pressure warning light is no longer working on the Peugeot. I clearly disturbed something when taking the instrument binnacle out. I also utterly failed to glue the clock back in. Took the edge off my celebration of a job well done as it clearly wasn't well done at all!

Driving the Volvo today noticed it was only blowing cold air. I think I need to give it a bit of a service, do a cambelt and change the stat.

Going to luzz it in for a MOT this week to see what it needs before spending anything else because money is a bit tight at the moment.

Andy (bignut off retro rides) just dropped a t25 off for me that I bought to break. Van turned out better than I though (I bought it from a single picture taken on a £10 cameraphone, across a carpark through a dirty window)

Andy is a top bloke and delivered the van for a MEGACHEAP PRICE (£70 from Leicester to Rotherham)

If anyone buys owt and doesn't fancy a frame CHAOS then give the guy a shout. If you're feeling lucky you can just put the money in his bank and he'll get the cash out and pay for the vehicle, too. That way you can do away with the "going to look at a vehicle that you know you're going to just buy anyway even if it's an absolute nail" charade.

Got a red V5C/Logbook for The Volvo today. To me, the 'V5C' logo in the top left looks like something that would have adorned the funnel of a car ferry in the 1970s:

Has anyone else received one yet?

Loads- been getting them in dribbles for months.

Wonder what the next colour will be -when a stash of these get knicked...

They've been going for quite a while. First one I got was for my Espace V6 which was October 2010!

I'm going to carry on stealing them until they start to issue us with beige ones
