I've had an autobox apart.

You'll need an impact gun, but the guts only go in and out in one order, and being methodical and keeping everything in order you can't really go wrong.
You shouldn't even need to go inside the box as it sounds like the gears themselves are fine, the solenoid packs are generally on the outside and just replacing them should be all you need to do.

On this one the gearbox sump has to come off.  So that's about twelvety million 10mm bolts, plus I'd need to dump the new ATF I've just put in, plus I'd need a new sump gasket.  On the plus side the solenoids should be easy to get to once the sump is off - it's not like I'd need to start removing planetary gears or anything - but it's still more than I feel comfortable doing - especially laying on my back under the van in a cold, damp car park in December.

I went out on a last minute jaunt up the A5 to Holyhead to buy some seats for the Mondeo, bought off eBay.

When I got there seller said that the rear upright won't fit my hatchback, but I don't mind as I paid £50 for the lot and it's the drivers seat I really want. Might fit what I can of the rest anyway, or sell the rear seat set. Don't know...

Local motorfactors had a Mk1 Focus front spring in stock.

Thankfully the pinch bolt came out easily from the hub.

Retest booked.

Fingers crossed for a pass.

It's been fun*

There is a father and son U.S. auto transmission rebuilders youtube channel, called Precision Transmissions that is always interesting to watch for hints/tips or motivation.
Sorry couldn't get a link to work.

Every time I do another video (Lanchester one coming soon) I have a greater appreciation for people who do it regularly and far better than I can manage.  It's a boatload of work even for the mediocre stuff I produce.  I'm glad I'm only doing it for fun and not to earn a living with.  It's also shocking just how much material you get rid of in the editing process, latest video is only half an hour long and took four hours of footage to make and it's still only okay.

The question is: how entertaining is it? I'm sure it's entertaining. The question is not: how good is it's production value?

Going more for educational than entertaining with this one really, so it's got a bit of the old telly-on-a-trolley/open university/dadcam vibe about it.  And I'm okay with that.  I also understand why there's so little info out there on how to strip down and rebuild door cards, it's a right palaver doing it and the recording and then the editing.

Just looking at insurance for the E28 520i and thought I should check the mainstream insurers. Anyone ever heard of or used quotelinedirect? Can't be much worse than Lancaster insurance surely!

Got my van insured with quotelinedirect. Had to email copies of driving license over to them and proof of no claims. Other than that they seemed ok. Trouble is you never find out who good or bad they are until the worst happens.

They reckon tomorrow will see them done with the area around the pond (which will mostly have to be done by hand due to electrical wiring nearby we can't easily isolate).  Once that's done it will be all about trenching and installing root barriers and such to make absolutely sure it never comes back.

The biggest tip I can give is try to do your editing with the record button. There's no way I could face editing four hours of footage down! Takes a while to learn what you actually want recording, and there are annoying moments where something interesting happens off camera, but it's how I operate.

And I certainly learned very quickly that content is king, not production values. I admire stuff like Retropower where a proper videographer is involved, but one of my go-to channels is still Mustie1, who has a very simple approach.

My hatchback 2.0 Mondeo tells me I'm doing 33, which is disappointing considering my 2.5 6 cylinder BMW was doing 31, and I verified that.

I've not yet done a real test on the Mondy, I'm a bit scared I might not like the result.

I'm doing a motorway trip on Friday, I might reset the mpg guage to make me feel better.

The Mondeo petrols are crap on fuel, I found the Zetec really thirsty unless you drive it like a nun, which was impossible as it has fuck all torque unless it’s revving it’s tits off. The Mk3 2.0 petrol was better maybe 33 mpg, but the diesel reckon on another 10-15mpg more depending how you drive it.

I spent a week trying to hypermile it and got 35-36 indicated, then got bogged down with lots of short hilly journeys, so I started hooning a bit more. Just did a long run across the moors and mountains and on a dual garage way and it's climbed to over 34 average again.

It's got torque, there is decent power for average driving from below 1000rpm, so it's a 30mph in 5th kind of car if you're not in a rush.

Well there's a ten year warranty on the work done...so if it does come back the guys will have to come back and sort it.  That's why we've got a specialist in.  That and we've been trying to kill it utterly unsuccessfully ourselves for the last six years now.

You should have just bought a panda - that would soon have sorted it for you.

I used to get 40-45mpg on the motorway on the 2.0 Mk3 petrol. The old petrol Mondeos are giveaway money these days so if you don’t mind the fuel economy they can be a bargain. Incidentally I found the Mazda units in the Mk3 much more economical than the Zetec in the Mk2.

Crimbo pressies of my parents: dash cam and hardwire lead.

Ape-man C370 small but hi-Res wide angle.

Been meaning to for ages, when read back on @sutty2006's thread about getting side swiped by Audi Wanker and recalling how many things I see and near misses with Mr and Mrs Wankermobile, it's time to jump in.

Why?

Because of the spare parts that it yields, will be stripped and sent to the scrap

Actually I've never considered it. I think it's there, I'll check to make sure when I take it off.

Here's what it looks like, I'm not sure what it's meant to look like though.

I can’t be without one now. Memory card failed in the landrovers camera and I hated driving it without a working camera. As for it’s effectiveness, well, it depends what you catch. That Audi that side swiped me his Reg wasn’t visible, and we are now 2 years into the claim and a court date is inevitable. Damned if you do, damned if you don’t 😢

Fair.  Having glass in stock would be worth it, I suppose.  We need a full inventory after you've completed the task.

I agree, the simpler the better. Mustie1 is great, as is his buddy.

Who's his mate?

It's a back up, not a guarantee. But yes useful to have, for sure.

Good luck with that rigmarole.
