I deffo can't do the whole bangernomics thing . Just ordered 4 new Pirelli p1 tyres for my ex Red5 £325 vectra!

I've driven plenty of cars on shit tyres but the "goodride" ones on this are lethal in the wet.

Sam did use the phrase ditchfinders in an email when discussing the car but I was unprepared :-).

I'm not even a quick driver but had a few moments in the last week or two so I went tyre shopping . Got the pirellis for 38 plus vat each which I'm happy with . Uniroyals a quid or two cheaper but I know they don't last for more than 10k so thought I'd try a Pirelli again . I hated the p6000 but I would hope things have moved on a bit since.

Been offered a very high mileage Audi A4 for cheaps, it would be cheaper on the fuel bill than the S60 for my commute, Hmmmmmmm.

Initially this made me suspect the coil pack. Changed it for a new one (easy 4 bolt job) and no difference.

Oh well, injector chasing here I come.

That's fine under my bangernomics rules. If you had a more expensive car, you'd probably still have forked out for decent tyres, so you're still better off! That's top man maths.

It's cheaper than replacing the banger and paying mr farmer for his fence, so makes sense to me.

I was a pump boy back in '74 and I HATED those damn things. The keys and cylinders seize, they would get fitted on the piss and jam, refuse to refit at all:  "you took it off so you put it back", the tabs get razor sharp and cut my freezing cold, petrol dissolved fingers. etc etc etc

They actually worked better on Minis than most because a Mini's fuel filler is at the perfect height and angle.  But when they were used on Marinas down inside that stupid little hand hole.......

Keep the key and cylinder well lubed and always put it on square!

I was a pump jockey, too.   Hate those things and still do - any car of mine fitted with them gets a plain replacement fuel cap and the locking bastard hurled in the river.   I would rather people stole my petrol, pissed in the tank or poured three packets of sherbet dip-dab in it than ever wrestle with one of those again when it goes bad

Indeed and I know it's a bit of a cliche but I do carry my daughter about in it too . I'm a bit of a tyre snob to be honest and new ones always ride so much better too

Regardless of how cheap and knackered the car, tyres and brakes always get sorted if they're not up to scratch, it's just not worth skimping.  The Accord had absolutely rubbish mismatched tyres on it when I bought it, plenty of tread on them but two were elderly deathcircles, the car handled strangely and felt short of grip.  Two nice new Toyos on the front and the best two moved to the back have made it feel much safer, although I know some of it's probably in my head - still worth it though!

If it's been looked after it and serviced regularly should last for years while doing 50-60mpg. Check scuttle where the battery is, bungs block and water floods into the electronics - French car style. I'd go for it.

We've serviced it regularly, I'm sure it wasn't on 100k when we first saw it, it's on 300k+ now.

At the price you can get tyres, it's silly not to put the best on anyway.

300k ? That would need to be scrap money - must be worn smooth everywhere

My V70 was on 307k when the "incident" occurred.

The Maestro had shit tyres on it, so I splashed out on a set of new Michelin Energys. Then I sold it and bought the Royale. Which also had shit, perished old budget tyres on it, so yup, you guessed it, another brand new set of lovely Michelins were procured at great expense and fitted. They ride really nicely, sadly, the same cannot be said of the Rover which has Ying Yong ditchfinders (albeit with plenty of tread). It really doesn't grip the road very well at all for a 'modern' car and I've had a couple of hairy moments on slightly damp country lanes where the car's skidded and the ABS (I fucking hate ABS, never had a car with it before!) has started pulsing. But at the same time, it's a worthless old banger with a load of accident damage and 140k on the clock. Might be tempted by some part worns if I can find some of sufficient quality.

Not normally a fan of cheap shite tyres but the Rovellos on the front of the Mondeo are actually decent tyres, hold the road fine. Fitting some more on the back in due course.

I've fixed the bloody smoke alarm that goes off as soon as you look at the cooker.

One claw hammer later & the fucker is quiet for all time. At least I did something useful today & doing it cheered me up a bit.

Mine doesn't like bacon being cooked, or eggs. or fried bread.

Pretty much a full English.

I would buy another one quick and fasten it some distance away from the cooker.

Or stop burning things.

It was at the far end of the house, but I leave the door open to hear the radio. It'd go off without burning anything.

When I rewire the house next year I'll have to put two mains powered ones in for the regs, but the breaker will be off most of the time.

If you put the right alarms in for the location you'll very rarely get false triggers, they've come a long way.
