you should go to Copart, especially on a saturday.

there will be a dozen or so big hi-top vans in the carpark, which the eastern europeans will be filling with as many bonnets, doors, wings, bumpers and the like the van will possibly hold and still get the van's doors shut.

i guess those bits too are going abroard, not that i mind (its aldi/bmw/merc stuff normally) but it seems a hell of a way to earn a living, if they are then driving said vans back to poland loaded, to then come all the way back here....

but with the poles, its a cultural thing that they keep their cars as long as possible and get as much use out of them as they can, and only changing their cars when they are utterly fucked.

the poles i know cannot understand why anyone would change a perfectly good car every couple of years like we do in this country.

I've been neglecting my old Merc 300SE lately so I took it out for a meander about tonight, I passed a couple of yoofs grinning driving an old shark nose black 6 series BMW then saw a Fiat 850 Coupe out in the evening sun. Good to see them out and about.

I bought a car tonight for the Mrs, she wanted a small 4 x 4 (Freelander) but I managed to talk her out of it and get a small convertible. Decided on the Megane MK2 as I like the look of them and they are cheap. It's one of the first Face lift models which got improved electrics but we shall see how reliable it actually is. For 850 snots I'm chuffed.

Well peeps, the last time you saw my truck it was on towing duties taking the TR6 down to the workshop for repairs, starting Monday morning. However it developed a problem of its own on Sunday afternoon.......fuel pump casing split, petrol spraying all over the place so Triumph on back burner.

Fuel pump is in the tank and yup it's a pain in the arse. Dropping the tank is a real pain in the arse too, so there's only one other way.

This lasted into the afternoon in the blazing heat and bytime it was done it seemed a good idea to go round the vineyards doing some wine tasting.............. Again........... We rolled out the works van.

Spent this morning trying to evict a few electrical gremlins from Mrs_WoC's mk iv Golf. Nothing major, but the central locking operation has always been a bit eccentric and the interior lights only work when they feel like it.

The Internet suggested that the cause of multiple problems like these is often a duff 'convenience module'; a black box of tricks that resides behind the dash.

Apparently there are several versions depending on spec so it's advisable to check the part number on the one in the car before trying to obtain a replacement, as the incorrect version might not work. Obviously the part number isn't visible without hoicking the thing out from under the dash (why would it be?) so I spent ages trying the get the dash apart without breaking anything. Only then did I discover there's a much easier way in through the fusebox:

TOP TIP: Guitar plectrums make great tools for gently prizing apart push-fit bits of trim.

Two screws hold the fusebox in place then it can be eased out of the way.

There's the bleeder. Two screws to undo, then disconnect the wiring harness.

Here's one I prepared earlier:

888C44A0-F4F0-4247-B9B0-3B14CF69BEFD_zps

There's no sign of water getting into the old one or owt, so I was dubious as to whether just swapping in another would make any difference. But as it was only a tenner on Ebay I figured it was worth a shot. Obviously there's no guarantee that a secondhand electrical part isn't going to have the same or similar problems, but it arrived well wrapped up suggesting the seller might actually give a crap and has sent it in good faith.

So I plugged it all in and has it made a difference? Well, sort of.

The central locking seems to work properly now. It was too keen previously to invoke the 'global open/global closure' function, but now it waits the required couple of seconds when the key is turned before putting all the windows up or down. The central locking also now works on the passenger side, which it didn't before, or sometimes it didn't, or something...

But the interior lights still don't work. Annoying.

Golf forums suggest that the door-lock module/s could be faulty. This is common apparently. The microswitches that tell the car that a door is open are integral - not on the door-shut like I'd expect - and prone to fail due to shit soldering at the factory.

However this would mean all five of my locks are faulty, and also it doesn't explain why the map lights and sunvisor mirror-lights don't work either, as they should operate independently of the doors being open. I've checked the bulbs and fuses and all seems in order.

What else could it be?

I had the exact same problems on my (ex) wife's mk4 golf. She insisted on getting a golf as they were 'reliable' so we paid top dollar at bca Peterborough for it. One of the worst cars I've owned due to constant niggly faults. Sold it and bought a cheap 156 2.4jtd off eBay without seeing it and with no service history. 6 years later it's still going strong and has been superb.

Got down to hunterston and now waiting about to start filming. They made me wear an 80s style rugby shirt and my role is to drive by... f428f96134711bd26d348800cd03180a.jpg

I'm guessing they didn't want my volvo as they already had a 240 estate being used.

Took the Maestro and tow bar to the fitters and firstly he said he doesn't fit used bars then when he looked at it didn't think the set up will fit properly as there are two types, one for metal one for plastic bumpers.  He said he'd see if he could find some more info to see if it could be adapted though.

I think it might be easier to just stick a towbar on a panda, but I don't think the 999cc engine could pull the foreskin off a rice pudding at a bar mitzvah.

i smell billy bullshit here i had an metel bumper model and an mg and they both had the same towbars

Any film with this level of shite is going to be worth a watch simply for the street furniture. Do you know what it is or when it will be out, or aren't you allowed to say anything about it yet?

Like every other Fiesta I've owned mine has an oil leak from some unknown own source. Not a major worry and it's nicely coating under the car, but, as the oil lights stand on for a few seconds after starting thought it was time I put some in.

While I was there had a quick check round and bugger me the expansion tank was empty. It's not been over heating (though it does get hot in very slow traffic) so I filled it up, but checked around as it doesn't leave puddles and found this on the thermostat housing

Only a bit wet but i suppose over time it's affected it. It definitely isn't HGF as

Water was a nasty colour but I'll live with it and start thinking about cleaning it all up and maybe some new hoses

While I've been at home, the Renault got an unsolicited inspection and it appears to have developed a gearbox problem (not as a result of the tow start attempt, I hasten to add) in that it's locking everything up when in gear.  It could be another reason the car was laid up in the 90s.  Suspicion is of a stiff/seized input shaft or an incorrectly installed clutch.  We'll take the gearbox off and inspect just to be extra sure everything is at it should be and nothing has moved.  Bit disheartening for me to hear the news really when everything was doing so well but I had been warned that the gearboxes on these can be a bit... Renault.

I'm excited as I'm off to look at a car on Saturday with the hope of buying it!

Last week Old Man and I did 190 miles in the A4 to go on various parts-related adventures. Got 32mpg too which is good for a 2.6 petrol V6 Audi doing motorway speeds all day.

Old Man spent Sunday on various little bits like a rear folding seat bush, a missing piece of sill trim, and various other boring bits.

Just ordered a pair of Bilstein B8s to sort out the rear shocks.

We're hoping it'll sort out the weird reverse rake problem (at least one rear shock is fucked). If it doesn't, then it's going to end up with adjustable coilovers on the front.

Does anyone have a pair of spotlamps less than 80mm tall? Want to fit some to make use of the foglight wiring but we only have so much space. Hella Comets (the rectangaular ones) are slightly too big and expensive.

I went to U-Pull-It in York last Sat.

No vans to be seen but a few Poles about pillaging the VAG stuff as ever. They got in an English registered mk5 Golf and left as we did. Lot of English folks about, a couple of blokes Old Man was talking to looking at '90s 5 Serieseses, and some young lads pulling bits off various VAG cars to upgrade their Polo or whatever.

However, there was an eastern European artic being loaded with some sort of engines (PDs?) all bloody day.

A suspicious amount of the VAG diesels were missing the engines.

The little automatic panda came home today with a fresh mot - sailed right through not even an advisory!

Shouldn't really have favourites in the fleet but this is just such an honest little car I can't see myself parting with it.

I saw a old girl last week in a white E reg Fiat Panda 4x4 with a front bull bar, I've never seen it about before and it was clearly just a daily driver with dents and scabs over it

Is it not the springs that control the rideheight rather than  dampers? Reverse rake would suggest the rear springs are too soft?

Daft as it sounds, is your reverse rake on the Audi due to having front springs on the back and vice versa?

Well, it's not quite as exotic and exciting as i was originally hoping for but it's still a 80s classic like i wanted but something I'm more familiar with...

Its this 1982 Cortina 2.0 Ghia S, 80000 miles and in great condition. It needs that gash bonnet badge skipping and probably a few other little jobs but it's ideal for what I'm after at the moment.

Check out the green interior!

I do actually know the car and owner so I'm not expecting any disappointments plus it's local to me. The current owner hasn't got time to use it any more and wants it to go to a good home. That number plate will be binned and put back on it's original X plate again.

Good luck with the viewing, look forward to seeing it if all works out OK. That colour does look great on the Mk5.

The Renault has an electrical problem.  Quelle surprise!  Bit of an odd one.  Fitted the new headlight and I'd thought that the dimness of one bulb was down to the fact there was no silvering on the knackered old headlight bowl and no lens.  However, on fitting the new headlight one bulb remains really dim.  We've swapped the bulbs side to side and checked continuity on the bulbs and found that the bulb is not at fault.  What's even stranger is that when you put it on main beam, the dim bulb gets dimmer.  We've made sure there's a good earth for that light unit too and that hasn't made a jot of difference compared to a poor earth location.

Mike has done some tests and the bulb plug on the dim side does behave differently to the bright side with the voltage dropping from about 11 on sidelights and dipped beam to -1 on main beam (not even sure how that's possible, but I'm not a sparky).  Mike suspects there's a broken, chafed or shorting wire in the headlight circuit so he's unwrapping the loom to investigate further.

Any ideas welcome on this one, it's not something I've come across before.

Omg that's nice! Crystal green, one of my fav Ford colours of that era.

Is that a Lincoln hood ornament?! And if it is can I have it if you don't want it!?

That's the 2nd cortina I've seen with locks fitted to the bottoms of the doors. WTF is that all about?

If i get it remind me and you can have it!

Don't worry too much if you can't get it off the car easily, I suppose I could just take that with the hood ornament, if I have to of course!
