The Thousand Pound Range Rover

Wack

Recommended Posts

That wood is going , running fine now , not needed to add any more water , I did renew my AA cover today got free home start which may come in handy :D

I have got a 3 letter 3 number plate on retention but I'm going to wait to see how I get on with it first

All I'm going to say about the bill is I'm happy , it's still a cheap running driving MOTD range rover , just not as cheap I was hoping

When is it being delivered?

My neighbours have a 2016 Range Rover. It has just spent two weeks at RR being fixed- something electrical she said. I am afraid I was trying to be concerned and sympathetic whilst not smirking as I am sure she thinks my cars let the tone down.

I couldn't imagine spending that much money on a used car.

It's emissions regulations that have made them so complicated , when they were testing the euro 6 truck engine one of the biggest obstacles was cooling , an engineer told me the exhaust gasses go back through the engine 6 times before they go out the exhaust

They’ve had theirs new. So presumably this work is warranty and over £100,000 new. He went on some trip to Morocco for a rr driving experience or something before buying. It replaced a 54reg one. Oddly he doesn’t drive anymore - I think he’s been banned.

Ready for the school run, or are you going to properly put it through its paces? Looks straight as a die to be fair, and at least you know the main oily bits are now sound. Noice.

Don't do the school run , I've a mate who has my old defender , there's talk of a pay and play in the spring but I'll only be doing the girlie bits

Nice motor! But that interior, nope, needs piano black or aluminium effect dash trims, dark/black/anthracite door cards, seats and lower dash panels, hate light coloured interiors on Rangeys, still that should present no problem as a cheap and easy job after an engine swap on one of these.

PS did the shell have to be separated from the chassis for the engine swap?

I know a guy (used to work with him) who worked for Arnie Shark, ended up working in one of the Vauxhall branches and for some reason someone had put a 2010 Rangey in there for repair, I could be wrong but im sure it was a twin turbo one, both turbos fucked, he had to separate the chassis from the body, had a photo of the body lifted by a 2 post lift on the 4 jacking points and the chassis and wheels on the ground, his job was to strip down engine and remove the turbos, await new Turbos coming in from LR dealer, refit new turbos and put everything back together, im sure he said hed advised new seals or something along with the new turbos, service manager refused, guy I know said the turbos would just fail again unless they were done, was told to get on with the job, fitted the new turbos, low and behold car came back faulty a few days later and he was handed the keys, told to strip it down and replace the seals hed wanted to replace originally, he flung the keys at them and walked out, Sounds like almost as much of a fuckabout as youve had with yours.

The body didn't need to come off the chassis , the engine aggro was entirely my own doing , I took a chance on a engine on a pallet and it didn't work out , looking back on it I think Steve was right , it looks like that first engine had been run with a blocked crankcase breather which had pushed the oil out of the dipstick, when I collected the engine the oil had been removed ready for shipping so whether it was the breaker or the guy that sold him the car I'll never know.

it needs 4 tyres , I can get 4 I've never heard of for £300 or

do you have the mahogany of teak finish??

much prefer the later style piano black inserts...but if not get em wrapped in Faux brushed stainless, would match body colour quite well..

I'm not sure the black would fit in with the rest of the dash, but I did find this on ebay in dark brown which I think I could live with, the only thing I can't see is something to cover the wooden teak trim on top of the door pockets

Just read this thread from start to finish. Absolutely exemplary work. You have really nailed how to do it. You have got a bargain car and overcome some serious problems without even getting your hands dirty. Someone less skilled could easily have started from the same point and ended up £8-10k worse off with a less good rangey at the end. The fact that you have ended up where you have, with someone else doing the spannering, shouts 'shite jedi' to me. Fair play to you.

I like tinkering but a full restoration or engine swap is beyond my tools and skills , This is my 4th car bought with a knackered engine , if I didn't know Steve I wouldn't have gone near any of them, but this is nothing compared to the 12 month old B class with a seized engine I bought, that one worried Steve, there's a Mercedes specialist round the corner who was supposed to get all the electronics sorted out but couldn't do it as his computer wouldn't talk to it

The worrying bit was it had to go to Mercedes, even the headlights need to be programmed into the ecu or they won't work , it had to have a complete re installation of all the software but it went without a hitch, there were a few sighs of relief with that one.
