The Stalwart's over-terrain capabilities come from the fact that
the six-wheel-drive system lacks differentials, using simple bevel
gears to transmit drive. A centre mounted no-spin differential allows
a certain amount of slip between the two sets of wheels on each side
of the vehicle on hard surfaces, but there is no allowance for rotational
speed differences between front and rear.

When I were a lad, I had a Matchbox model of an Airport fire tender. Think it was an Alvis Saladin. Think there was a Sararcen armoured car as well. Or was it the other way round? They had six wheels as well. Would they have had anything in common with a Stalwart?

I think the fire engines were called Salamanders, the salamander being a kind of newt-like creature that is mythically associated with fire.   All of those Alvis 6 wheely vehicles had stuff mechanically in common - not sure if it was just the drivetrain or if they had a common platform type scheme worked out.

Yes very much so, they are all effectively based on the same six wheel "chassis" or hull in the case of the Stolly.

In fact within the spares package included with the MK1 Stolly(No 22 by the way, not thought of a name for it yet) I got last week is a Scaracen differential which will fit in and apparently raises the top speed from 40 to 50MPH! So that will obviously be going in Biggles my road going Stolly.

I don't come on Autoshite much anymore and this thread is exactly why. The bloke has disposable cash and wants to follow a bit of a dream and just goes for it. He has some mental health issues but is fine at the moment thankfully, but some of the comments against him are frankly disgraceful and could depress anyone, let alone someone with issues.  He wins thread of the year and is now frankly ridiculed, disgusting. What happened to just being an eccentric Englishman? Were they banned in the new 'woke' laws? The biggest shock is that he has took all that shite and still hung around.
