Short mot also, low miles, looks tidy, few owners, mot history not too awful. Some bubbling starting around the edges of those big rear bumpers- usually a sign that the rear inner arches have got crispy.

 

2. Puma 1.7

Long mot. Low miles and good history. Rear arches tidy.

 

3. Late entry- Mondeo 2.5v6 Ghia X estate

Long mot, fairly tidy, arches look a bit bodged as the back, lots of toys. It is quite a trek though compared to the other two. Will the ka make it?! Love the stickers!

 

So I’ve made a decision to go for one of those- subject to a bit of sucking air through teeth etc- which do you recon I went for? Collection tomorrow am so I’ll shove up a pic when I’m back.

^ All true! In the end I got a bit tight and a bit lazy. The Mondeo is in Essex (300mi) and the Puma very close (10mi) and a fair bit cheaper. a quick test and once over showed the Puma drove spot on, and body was ok. It’s had rot at the rear of the sills and rear arches, been repaired ( are there any that haven’t?) anyway for the money I’m happy and my journey back was faster and more fun than the journey out there; the endura pushrod (aka ancient Kent lump) in the Ka p/x and the Yamaha co-developed 1.7 are night and day!

 

Oddly enough I’ve got the platform vehicle it’s based on, in the same colour (Pacific green)

 

 

It’s uk spec, RHD but has a German service book and PDI stamp- maybe a uk forces purchase?

 

Also found some bits in its history when it passed through a vehicle auctions.

All I can say is it just smells like an old ford ( presumably burnt under seal and mig wire?)

When these were new there were a lot of imports, as a lot of car supermarkets were importing them as they worked out cheaper than buying them from ford dealers.

Could have been private import, a lot used to go to Germany or wherever and buy a car in RHD. Worked out £2-3000 cheaper.

that mondeo is 20 odd miles from me.

i have a mk2 v6 ghia x estate.

i did a full circumnavigation of the m25 to collect mine.

mine was £162.

 

puma or ghia x would be a good choice but that mondeo is seriously salty.

Thanks, I almost feel I’ve let the side down by going for the Puma rather than the Mondeo- but money and distance/time counted against.

 

One for the ford experts- the escort boot has a stamped recess for the ford badge. This is commonly found on the last escort facelift (1995 on) mine is a late 94 build, and nominally should have a “surface” mounted badge on the right side above the light clusters. Is this a later replacement or could it have got out of the factory on early pressings with the new tooling?

Ford are terrible at this, during late Sierra production they had a load of the 1.6 pinto left and the 2.3 diesel, I’ve seen a few late stuff with the older unit fitted. How they came into the customer chain I’ve no idea as they wouldn’t have met emissions requirements.

I'm sure that tailgate is a facelift one, mine had the normal type still.

Google says Düren isn't far from Mönchengladbach (50km), and Rheindahlen as a result - big UK forces presence there until recently. There's also the matter of it being in Nordrhein-Westfalen, on Germany's western border - this lends provenance to most possible theories as to why it was bought in Germany.

Off to look at another Pacific green 90s ford; looking to do a deal on my very clean and tidy and unrotten mk1 focus. It’s just co incidence but I feel like a cheapo version of Chris Evans when he had all those white Ferraris....

Question is, what Pacific green 90s ford is it?

When we used Sierra estates at work they came with poverty spec with 4 speed gear knobs until one of the guys using them inadvertently changed up a gear on the motorway and found his car had a five speed gearbox as, it turned out, had most of them but they all had 4 speed gear knobs.

I ended up viewing a 2000 Mondeo st24. Hence the “all mouth no trousers” comment as, body kit and chassis changes aside, the engine is what you would find in a 2.5 Ghia.

 

Anyway, it’s very 90s bodykit and the mk2 mondy facelift itself, seems to have aged badly, which perversely was part of its attraction to me!

 

I went up to bridgewater up a sodden m5, and on to Lord and Lady Brassics’ emporium of older cars. We struck a deal and I came back one focus poorer and a Mondeo ST 24 richer....

The icing on the cake for me was the -NHK registration which will strike a chord with fans of 1970s detective dramas (shut it you tart!!!)

I remember when you could pick the st24s up easily for very little money. Hardly ever see them on the road now. Must be a real riot to drive!

I was ideally after an st200 and especially an estate as there’s the least of those about of all st24/200 variants. Plus the st200 has a bit more poke and (to my eyes) they made a bit more effort with the interior. There was an interesting one in white on e bay (51 plate late reg madness) but it was a bit too salty for me. Supposedly had police history as a demonstrator so probably not a bad buy in the long term, for people that actually hang onto cars!

Lovely Mondeo and Escort! I think what really needs to happen is this......

 

The Beetle floppytop needs to be swapped for my bright red 2.0 pez Galaxy, just imagine how many Dutch cycles you could fit in it at one go.
