Just a question, where did you order the radiator? I’m looking for a new one for my S1 Xj6.

Posted

I do find it a bit funny the car is being returned to relentless standard humdrum spec…. But with a radiator straight out of Fast Ford ca 2001 😅

(The reasoning is perfecly sound though!)

Good call on a bigger better radiator, especially with the original being so old now.
I bet if you gave the new one a quick blow over with some under bonnet black spray you’d hardly even notice it unless you were looking for it.

On my Capri I’ve got a rebuilt Capri 1.6 radiator top & bottom tanks with the core for a Cortina V6 in between, with more tubes and vanes. It actually holds quite a bit more coolant than the original did. Seems to work perfectly for it.

No radiator refurbers over there?

Yes, but I’ve been quoted £700 and upwards…

Back in the day that was £80, but now those one man workshops are gone. Just shiny industries working with farming equipment left.

I got it through e bay, it was listed from the czech republic with a few weeks lead time but it arrived 6 days after the order.

with a discount code it was £140. Actually it sounds like it was from china.

Meanwhile the Galaxy of shame plods on.

It recently swallowed an enormous  sofa (also off fb marketplace like the galaxy but a freebie) came in 4 sections and was fitted in like a giant jigsaw.

IMG_6033.jpeg.c336347164ac4aa7c6abaa7810ac2aff.jpeg

I removed all the seats except the front 2 so it was basically a nicely trimmed van, without any of the insurance or council tip visiting ballache. Nobody ever parks near it either (presumably the panel damage and general vibe make car proud people wary?)

IMG_6187.jpeg.f6624694891a4ec00595cb08814acfea.jpeg

In this weather the broken a/c and a few semi broken windows means it gets a bit hot inside, but this rescue dog is a good ‘un 🐶

So the Focus CC sold to a shiter, and the Galaxy of shame proved resistable to the forum even just above scrap money. In the end i decided to go to one “classic” (the escort mk2) and one front line vehicle (read on)

Ive done this before, but thought id try again. I was tempted by a 7 seater as every so often i do need one. Mileage is low so outright economy isn’t critical. Plus as it would be the only car id be taxing, it being in a mental tax bracket wouldnt be the end of the world either. I struck up a convo with the sort of seller looking for xyz in the ad so i decided to wade in with, well not xyz but the most ruined galaxy with an mot and a temperamental fuel pump relay…..

Enter a 56 plate mitsubishi shogun lwb elegance.

Originally bought by a famous hedge fund manager for use on his northumberland Grouse moor, lately its been used by a horsey lady to tow horse trailers with. Ive got a fascination with the engines in these (from a canter truck IIRC) old sloggers with 3.2 litres but only 4 cylinders. Each cylinder sweeps 0.8L!

Bought at the bottom end of the market, its actually quite decent. Oddly its cheaper for me to insure than the focus, and a lot less than an L322 i looked over.  Its already earnt brownie points as the none operational a/c has been tested , serviced and put back into ice cold working order (with nearly a kilo of the gas stuff (!) ) using a special offer where it was just over £40. Im not a hedge fund guru, but seems VALU from my chilled driving seat!

inside looks more Pajero spec than Shoggy... 99% of the shogs seem to be plastic and more plastic!!

Love a Shogun, I had a 2002 SWB V6 Auto that I wish I had kept. The only mod I made was 10mm spacers to allow me to traverse speed bumps in and out of my village, also gave it a nicer aesthetic look (trying hard not to say stance!).

Watching this with great interest as I'm dailying my Shonky Shogun Classic 54 plate that was rescued from a friend's paddock. Classic is Mitsi speak for bASe it seems.

You probably already know these love to rust. The filler neck in the rear arch being a favourite as it lets rust into the fuel pump and kills it. Mk3 pumps cost a fortune if borked!

Cracking things when working and nice result on the aircon.

Annnnd its no longer ice cold! Did the gas go away? did something else happen?

Im currently watching the f1 with wine

But when the shogun goes back tomorrow for a tyre to the same place i will see what they think about the  aircon. I guess there was no gas in the system when checked as it escaped. But they pressure tested it before regassing? hmmmmm

There are pipes that run to the second, rear a/c unit on the LWB. Guess what, they rot. Quite a few folks blank them off either underneath or in the engine bay and just use the front a/c unit.

From the Shogun Facebook page:

"so far I’ve unconnected the rear pipes on the chassis rail just in front of the driver, and made some caps to blank them off, with o ring seals in and also fitted with Loctite 542. The HP union is M16x1.5 and the LP union is M24x1.5. Leaving the Loctite to go off overnight and I’ll get the garage to pressure test the system tomorrow, fingers crossed!! No doubt the blasted thing will have another leak elsewhere!!"

Fleet news….

Mitsubishi is great. Aircon basically broken but i love the agricultural thumping 4 cylinder engine in it, and that it just works. No soft touch plastic nirvana, but hidden mission critical bits are carefully engineered. Land rover take note!

An Achilles heel on these is corrosion on the fuel filler neck causing water in the tank and fuel pump implosion. In 2021 this happened on this one and about £3600 going by the invoice later (wtf?) it was all sorted.

The escort has been sold to a fellow shiter, as has the focus.

What next? owning just the shogun didn't last long, and i had fun looking over all sorts of stuff. I nearly got an XJ12 series 3 but earlier memories of one i had in 2004 put me off. I also looked at the idea of a fiat 600 or an austin 10 that needed recommissioning but decided against.

The new “classic” arrives tomorrow. But what?

Answers on a postcard. Clue- Pub landlord transportation.

1986 Lada Riva 1200L in appliance white.

That's what the pub landlord we lived round the corner from had when I was a kid.  Followed by an L plate Proton 1.3 MPi which they had for well over a decade.  Plus a string of other vehicles, but that one was the dependable daily which always stuck around.

Nice to have someone else foot the bill for the pump etc. Cost of pumps is horrendous,  hence why the old bus is worth well more than scrap price if it's got a good pump even if it fails the MOT through terminal rust.

Going on what my mate's dad drove, as the owner of a free house when I was growing up in Somerset, car is either a Dolly Sprint, or a 635 csi!

My mate Ian’s dad had an early Rover 820 fastback when he ran a pub, so one of those or maybe the facelift version, automatic of course.

Pub landlord automatically means X300 or X308 XJ, crossing my fingers here!

If not, there was (and maybe still is) a rough XJR with long MOT on Ebay for 2k!
