I’ve been spotted! Just after that photo was taken it conked out again. Had a great day/ caper, laced with FTP and jeopardy

Sure I saw it advertised locally a while back... unless it's just very similar.

Seen from elsewhere that I am talking rubbish. Carry on...

  • 2 weeks later...

So the fiesta was a bit of a short termer in the end, even by my standards. After changing the coil pack and fitting a new battery, the hot start woes seemed to be banished.

Then EMY came into mind again. I’d previously had a go at doing a deal both when @Minimad5 had it (Involving an xj6) and a little while ago with @83C (involving a w124 estate)

In the end we came to an agreement and I ended up giving the fiesta and the money from @RobT in the w124/fiesta deal for EMY. In a roundabout forum way I swapped a w124 for a w210- so I now intentionally own 2 s210s (estates)  Regulars will know that what is odd for most is quite normal for me and cars. 3.2L v6 petrol / 3.2 in-line 6 TD/ 7 seats apiece.

Time for a back to back test and some shares in Bilt Hamber

  • HMC changed the title to HMC motors- 6.4L 14 seat Mercedes action

Nobody except myself ever pondered the differences between the pre and post facelift w210s. This began life as an ambitious photo montage, but after I opened a beer the photos stopped and I lost interest.

The front is most different as they did away with some more fussy panel  joints, lowered the nose of the car.  The facelift has (dark blue) has Xenon lights, the UR-w210 has conventional lighting.

After a can of Lidl Perlenbacher Pils i initially concluded that the bonnets are interchangable. A further can later, and on reflection none of the front end is interchangable. After a further can, comparison of rot spots reveals the later car to be the more rusty, with these examples at least. UNGLAUBLICH! Fraulien, pass me another beer please.

  • HMC changed the title to HMC motors- w210 beer comparison

After hearing folk bang on about the OM606, I've concluded that I must try one before they all disappear, be it by rusting away or being transplanted into other cars.

These 2 have been behaving themselves as you might expect. It’s the body rather than the mechanics on these that tends to misbehave. When it’s warmer and dryer I’ll buy a load of bilt hamber dynax s50 to blast all their box sections (probably 8 cans or so apiece). Both could also do with the underbody aft of the rear axle wire brushing and painting with a zinc rich coating. A lot of the underside beneath the cabin has thicker rustproofing but the back end especially has just got seam sealer and paint. And we all know how resilient* that winning combination can be on these tubs.

Alternate day use shows the more compliant ride (older elegance model) vs lower and more stiffly sprung (younger avantgarde model) car. Both displace 3.2 litres but it’s the punchy torque of the turbo diesel that pleases the kids when i can do donuts in my off road private test area. I think it’s safe to say I am one of the children enjoying myself as well.

14 miles later and I just about made it on time to #2 socially distanced transport

Whilst I catch my breath my next purchase was very nearly a 1990 maestro dlx turbo, that was in the e bay tat thread.  It was in cereedididigeon and almost impossible to reach on a train. Also we couldnt quite agree on a price; so it didn’t happen (it’s up at 750 and I saw it as £500 tops as the body looks more than a bit ropey in places.)

Anyway,This new purchase is more fashionable to a non car person, but deeply uncool on here, I suspect. But cheaper than a  Crashed maestro dlx turbo. That’s the topsy turvy world of older cars for you.

Wow, a DLX Turbo! I loved my DLX but then it was only nine years old. I put 30k miles on in 11 months, only needed servicing and one used tyre then sold it for £50 less than I bought it for (£750, bought for £800 back in 1999.

Now in 2021 I can imagine what a crashed Maestro could look like...

What? I’m guessing Tavistock to Plymouth on that? Bloody hell you must be fit/mad or both. You deserve a medal at least.

I'd hope Gunnislake, but knowing HMC. You never know.

Remember a previous collection thread pic of his feet, lying on floor/pavement having a breather...

Yes, could be, but equally hard work. Not great weather today either.

Nice!

I didn't love mrs m's "new" beetle but would like to try a convertible.

Good going on the cycling - that's a fair old way on a Dutch bike. Spose not too hilly though... not sure about tavistock to plymouth?

What's the spec?

It’s a 1.9tdi. It was at the vendors parent’s house. My phone died en route so had to do the last bit by memory. The starter was very lazy when I started it- I think it had sat for a while as since then it’s been ok after a run. I just about got back on what was left in the tank as I had teh fear it might not start again on the forecourt, and as far as I could tell the solenoid to open the filler flap wouldnt activate with the engine left running.

So I decided just to go for it. The partly disassembled bike slight poking out of the passenger window kept the speed down anyway. The low coolant light was initially on and then went out before I could find a spot to pull in and investigate.  Plus the back of the roof isnt pretty, but for the money I decided it was worth a punt. I dislike the private plate though.

There was also no screen wash. I immediately feared a “powered by fairy dust” zero Maintenance regime, so after discovering that i immediately pulled in to check that the tyres weren’t beyond legal, but they seem okish.

Re the fuel filler my vw does that sometimes. Found pressing the fuel door at same time as central locking normally gets it open.
