Unconfirmed reports that AS field operative phil_lip has recovered the asset* from a location in Warwickshire.

He reports most of the damped quality* action fixtures and fittings are intact.

It Was great to meet up again with phil_lihp as he dropped off £380 worth of prime VAG. I'm happy with the new VW, it's had one family owner from new and done 239k. They didn't seem to be keen on washing it but liked to collect tax discs in the original dealer tax disc holder. I've got every last one!

Right back to the one supplied new on its day of registration.

Finally home with a cup of tea after a long day of train delays, although that said, the drive back was incredibly easy and it all made for a good day out.  I didn't even have to stop for fuel on the way home as the seller had left half a tank in it.  He was a thoroughly pleasant chap, picked me up from the station and seemed a bit sad to see the car go, not really surprising given it's been in their family since new.  The interior is a tad grotty and the outside looks like it has never seen more than the occasional automatic car wash but it should scrub up well.  Aside from the suspension being a bit bouncy and the steering being a little bit wandery on the motorway, the mileage didn't really seem to have affected it, it's held up well.

 

Good to catch up with HMC again, interesting chat with his neighbour and a brief admiring glance at his slightly mouldy and broken but still rather lovely X300 XJR.

What does a £100 Ford KA look like? I will be able to answer this later today when I collect one. MOT to October, runs and drives. If there is any metal left holding the fuel filler to the body it will be a fucking miracle. 51 plate so which engine will this have?

I ran a MK 10 4.2 as a daily for 7 years! Yes, it was old then but I loved it, even after it fell on my head (scars still visible to prove     ) as all the rear subframe bushes were rotten. It was a really reliable old heap (not a heap at all) and quietly rapid when pressed. I would have another but prices have gone skywards now after decades where they were worthless. Mine was a 'C' reg (FJU 99C) so one of the last MK Xs which were better cos more wood and leather. Mine also had a record player in the front armrest that played 45s... and it worked! Sold it to my step dad and he left it in a field and last heard, it was still there! he was a right wanker sometimes.

Probably looks a bit like mine did when I bought it for £100 and it still had an MOT...

 

Less metal=less weight=more speed so no worries there.

 

Mine's a 52 plate and was one of the first to have the duratec. I suspect yours has the old motor, could be wrong though.

Made it back! A slipping clutch meant I had to be quite sympathetic with it. There is the question of rust. Not so much yes/no. More how bad, as we are talking about a model which does it for fun. However, other Ka qualities remain such as chuckability, and a sense of wanting to wring the most out of its time before the bridge beckons.

Given that most KAs are now badged Hotpoint that looks pretty decent.

I had one of these as my first car, the earlier engine model too. I remember it being far more fun than it had any right to and the oily bits seemed pretty bulletproof.

 

Later I briefly had a Fiesta with the 1.3 duratec engine that later Ka's got, I ve got bitter memories of having to remove the manifold just to replace the icv. Shortly afterwards the thermostat housing started leaking, I fixed it and sold it shortly afterwards and swore never again.

This crate sounded like it had a cvt ‘box so bad was the clutch slip. It was also restricting the application of its limited power and hampering its chuckability. Boring! Plans to nurse the the clutch till the mot evaporated and I banged it in to a local garage, collecting it this evening with a new clutch fitted.

 

I’ve just changed the ancient oil and filter....

 

 

I also dared to look underneath a bit more and it doesn’t seem too bad (for a ka) which perhaps isn’t saying much but what do the AS collective think?

I used to love driving these when I worked for the Ford dealer. Back in about 2000 I worked at the local main dealer and we had a fleet of these as courtesy cars, admittedly they were all nearly new but we're such good fun to trash around. How they feel when now they are this age I don't know!

At 80,000 odd miles and getting on for 20 years mine feels pretty tight and "new" by my standards - still begs to be thrashed like a hire car. Saying that, new shocks didn't hurt, and new tyres (as ever) made a huge difference.

 

I think it's miles, and who put them on, that makes the difference. I like a well-worn motor, but FWIW my Ka doesn't feel like one.
