Lord Sterling Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 Whilst I was in Turkey I was contacted by a member here about collecting a car. I'd done it before for shiters and thought 'yeah, why not'. Upon arriving back here I started to worry as finances were so low, even a bus fare made me welch. I went straight back to work and the week was seriously crap. The earliest I got home was 7:30pm with 6am starts. Latest 9pm. I hadn't had chance to uwind properly after ariving back from Türkiya. I was shattered and had loads of stuff I needed to catch up on. I'd asked work to 'end' me in Lincolnshire where this vehicle was located. Come yesterday, they didn't. I ended up in Bubsville aka: Derby. Up until this point everything seemed to be going wrong. I was constantly trying to catch up with myself and left other important things like contacting seller by the wayside plus I was critically low of funds that making Lincolnshire was going to be very difficult. Anyhow. Thanks to Petrolize of whom had bought the vehicle I managed to get to the wilds of Lincolnshire and thw station carpark where I saw this; Yep. This is what I was on my way to collect and be my ride home. Its a Golf GL 1.9 Turdbo Diesesel. The lady seller caught up with me after she accused someone else of being me. I guess I wasn't what she was expecting. We met at the station car park where money was exchanged and papers signed away and I was soon winging my way back home. I had a look around the car and it seemed like an honest old thing. 2 hours and 120-odd miles later I arrived back home, so let's have a look at it; As stated its an honest old thing. Needs a bit of a clean and ideally a service but it drives well and certainly has some poke to it. I've never met Petrolize so he'll be another shiter I will be meeting soon. Same was for the PBK Ken and Cavcraft Alfa hadn't previously met them until I got he Alfa. Over to you Petrolize... BorniteIdentity, Cavcraft, Supernaut and 13 others 16
Dirk Diggler Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 Mad to see the 'luxury' of one of these compared to the stuff Volkswagen were flogging here in the mid / late 90s Ventos sold well here, golfs less so; but always in 1.9d, an atrocious colour and no spec (PAS wasn't even standard at launch here)
alcyonecorporation Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 Mo, If you're within a 1hr 30 radius of me and are struggling, gis a shout. Just not next Thursday. Can't do next Thursday. The Moog and Lord Sterling 2
reb Posted July 15, 2017 Posted July 15, 2017 Odd to think mine is from more or less the same time period. The interior looks more than a generation older I'd say. Quite obvious that a few interior bits are shared with the Polo though. Sent from my SM-G935F using Tapatalk
Lord Sterling Posted September 7, 2019 Author Posted September 7, 2019 Yo. MOAR collectionz today. Train: Final train stop: Yes, they are plants growing out of a golf bag. Met another excellent shiter of whom I have always wanted to meet. Had tea, paperwork signed and off I went in the steed; Its a nice example of a Honda Accord Vtec (yo!) But it drives like a Honda, just very AN CAR rather than a quirky car with character. Some years back, I was offered the pre-facelift model for £450. But no money and a Rover Sterling at the time saw me turn it down. It's pretty good at picking up speed quickly in a unhurried fashion, not in a "pull you back in your seat and have a minor grin" fashion, more a slightly characterless; "you want more speed? Here you go" way. Gear change is great in this, very much a reminder of short-shift and precise changes. Steering is light with little feedback, controls are clear and easy to use, no fuss, no pretentious laahdidaah. The exhaust note isn't a bad thing to listen to, it's no V6 but it sounds nicer than most 4-pots. These are like a much bigger and less interesting version of the K11 Micra, an unpretentious car that just does what it does best, being a car and doing what a car does. It's a good looking car but very anonymous. 7/10 - Characterless, but a dependable old boat that does best at being a car. skattrd, Bobthebeard, Cavcraft and 9 others 11 1

skattrd Posted September 7, 2019 Posted September 7, 2019 My local garage has an 04 Accord estate (mk7?) that I borrow on occasion and as you say they're a very competent car and handle well for the size. Being a Honda they should be reliable and provide sensible daily motoring. Bobthebeard 1
Lord Sterling Posted October 22, 2019 Author Posted October 22, 2019 As alluded to in the News 24 thread, another collection mission was booked for today. I'd missed the bus this morning by 7 mins and only had 40 mins to get to the station and pick up my pre booked train tickets. I called a taxi and away I went. Soon. I was on the first of 3 trains; The second train was much the same. Near Liverpool I went and sat in the "First Class" bit as that was the only bit that had a charger. Lots of interesting sights to be seen: Soon I was in Merseyside and clapped eyes on the ride home and met Taxi Paul! Had a bit of a chin wag. Signed some papers, forgot to drink tea, etc... then I headed south to Chester chez Cavcraft. Soz, no pics of green garages or white dogs, it was a flying visit. Mats fitted, garages and a certain red Astra looked at then I was back on my way home. On the way I spied a couple more Vectra Bs; Got the thumbs up from the above car! Vectra drives nicely. Comfortably and competant enough. As with most Vauxhalls, its a car that does what it does with no complaints. Compared to my Vectra B SRi, this has suspension. Its smoother and slightly wollowy than mine which was harsher. All in all its a nice car that'll happily do someone a good turn. 9/10. Ohdearme, skattrd, Coprolalia and 4 others 7

Lol! I only took it because it looked pretty grim! Ma_Sterling used to work at the hospital there some years back. I think on my collectionz I should start saying where I'm going rather than just stating "just on a collection". I'll let them say who they are if they want to.
Lord Sterling Posted August 11, 2020 Author Posted August 11, 2020 A few months ago just before I started my job I got given the task of delivering a Mk3 Fiesta. Admittedly, until then, I'd never driven a Mk3 Fiesta before and was quite excited to do so as Ma_Sterling had owned a radiant Red 1990 G-reg Mk3 Fiesta 1.0 Popular-plus. It drove just as I'd imagined it would. It had that familiar 999cc Kent OHV whine that I grew up with in the 90s. This was a 4-speed Fiesta. Yes, 4-speed! This alone made it an exciting prospect. Soon I was happily chucking it down the M5. Despite the 4-speed gearbox, it really surprised on the motorway. It wasn't shouty or as underpowered as the 4-speed gearbox and 999cc engine setup might suggest. At 70mph it was fairly happy and settled, anything past that it started to shout a bit more from the engine. Not having a 5th gear took a bit of getting used to though. It was fairly comfortable inside. Upon arriving at my destination, I didn't feel tired or irritated. I really liked it. It has bags of character. I've always liked Fiestas in pretty much every guise. 10/10. MorrisItalSLX, Shite Ron, ProgRocker and 14 others 17

Split_Pin Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 Ace! Glad you enjoyed it. My mum had a 1.1 4 speeder with a manual choke. I only drove it for 3 months after passing my test before she chopped it in for a MK4, still with the old 1.3 chapper. Lord Sterling 1

vulgalour Posted August 12, 2020 Posted August 12, 2020 That's a magnificent thing, on a par with the one Barrett posted recently in his spotted thread in fact. Superb that it still has its original steels and tiny hubcaps. GLWTS, rwd, it should do someone proud as a little runabout.
Lord Sterling Posted December 5, 2020 Author Posted December 5, 2020 MOAR collectionz and deliveries have been happening recently. A week ago, I was meant to deliver my old Zafira up north to another great member of Autoshite. Unfortunately, a bolt on one of the rear drivers caliper sheared and resulted in tje calpier slipping down the disc and causing some very loud banging noises and limping very badly into Sandbach services: Anyway, this didn't put the buyer off, so the tall Astra was was recovered, taken back, repaired and driven up today where I was warmly greeted and fed some lovely food before being dropped off a few miles down the road for the next part of my journey. OMG SNO KAOS: No trains were needed for return journey as I was to drive back down in this LOVELY thing: GR8 4 CHASIN AFTA CHAVz ON MOPEDZ. I like Vectras. I had one, loved it and lost it. And now, I really like this one. Noises of interest have been made. I really wanted a big thirsty car but clearly that isn't going to happen any time soon. So a great car and another great autoshiter met. This Vectra is a 1.9 CDTi 120. Very nippy, loads of pull and although near enough the same engine as my old Vectra (SRi 150) it oddly enough didn't sound or perform in the same manner. This Vectra looks gorgeous in Black, very "Road Wars / Thames Valley / Tango-Victor 3-7" with Lee Boardman giving a running commentary in a deep Mancunian accent. Vectra needs ball joints and bottom arms doing and I am told these will be done. As this excellent car had been standing for a while, I thought it only kind to chuck a bucket of water over it as the first part of a small overhaul. As always, I won't say who owns/sold/bought these cars, I'll let the owners say who they are if and when they want to. privatewire, Burnside, worldofceri and 6 others 9

Lord Sterling Posted January 3, 2021 Author Posted January 3, 2021 Nu_Yeer Colleshanz.... Just after Chrimbo, I was contacted by a shiter who needed a car moving closer to home. As I had a few days off, I thought why not? Some dates were arranged and on a cold Jan the 2nd I jumped on board a train heading north: Via my home town: And ended up here: Where this was parked (nowt to do with autoshite/shiters, it just happened to be there) Where I was collecting this: I decided to make it a 2 day job as I didn't want to rush around. Despite being a fan of K11 Micras and having driven a CVT boxed K11 Micra before, this was the first time I was driving one at any sort of distance. As I as taking it home for the night, I gave it a vacuuming, chucked a cloth over the dashboard and lubed the locks. Then off I set for the Bristol-ish area to its new owner. The K11 Micra CVT auto was a great little drive. Unlike most autos, it doesn't creep forward in 'D' you need to accelerate a tad to get moving. Despite being a 998cc, being an auto does not make it very economical on fuel as the manual would be. From N.Worcs to Bristol £15 barely lasted drinking its way through at least £10, bearing in mind of course that the M5 has inclines and descents, plus trying to pass people who don't want a 4-door Micra auto overtaking them 😒 Despite that, it won me over. It drove really nicely and felt solid, even after 20 years. I'll certainly be keeping a keen eye on this one 😁 As always, I'll let the owner reveal themselves if they want to and thanks for reading. Ah, forgot to say. I think I found the reason for the little cars thirst... Front tyres at 20 and 21psi, rears at 16 and 14psi 😂. All sorted the next day, 1 fill up later and she is averaging 36mpg on a 4 mile commute through villages, up and down hills max speed 40mph. She is a joy to drive, I'm a K11 convert as I'm sure my wife will be. Thanks again chum. Lord Sterling 1
