VAG 1.9DI was it ever fitted as a RWD in anything?

Following on from a daft conversation with a mate;

 

Did the VAG 1.9 diesel engines ever get fitted into anything that was RWD ?

(either as n/a or turbo, PD or earlier)

 

Has the same engine series ever been married to a RWD gearbox in a "north/south" configuration?

If so which box and did it need adaptor plates?

B5 Audi A4 quattro? (Or the much rarer Passat 4-Motion of the same generation)

 

They were a north-south configuration, and I've heard of people converting them to RWD only with some trickery.

No, but I have seen some kind of caterham creation with a 1.9 ve TDI fitted, so possible.

These are very, very rare - only offered for two years according to Glass's. HML (yes I know) suggests there were about 850 registered 1996-98, similar numbers to the 2.6 quattro. Most B5 quattros are 1.8T, 2.8, or 2.5TDI.

I remember reading somewhere that Jeep used a VW diesel.   I didn't take much notice though.

I think that was transversely mounted in some smaller Jeeps.

 

It's a common conversion for Toyota 4x4s in North America with an adapter plate to suit the Toyota 'box.

 

The Volvo 940 TD box mates up to the 5 cylinder 2.5 TDI but I think the 1.9 fitment is different.

A geezer in practical performance car was building a caterham or similar with a vag 1.9tdi. Few years ago now, and I've no idea if he ever finished it.

I assume this is all part of some plan to get a modern-ish diesel engine in an old car?

 

If so, why not think about the XUD?

 

It was fitted north-south in euro-market Suzuki SJs (and possibly a few other things).

I think I'd like one in a Series 1.

XUD is not part of it.

Not interested in XUD, Prima, or U-Boat engine.

 

 

1.9 VAG because 1.9 VAG

 

 

Someone thought VW LT35 but isn't that the 2.5TDI not 1.9.

Would a 1.9 VAG fit the gearbox for a 2.5VAG?

If so what about clutch?

Some Dacia Dusters from the early nineties had that engine I think?

 

Not sure if they were full time 4x4?

There are people who have fitted a 1.8t to a Porsche 924 gearbox via the torque tube (gearbox at back) but if my memory serves correct the 1.8t and 1.9tdi do infact share the same bellhousing pattern so might be another option.

Not XUD, not Land Rover.

 

The 2.0 4 pot LT shared* an engine with the 924, maybe that's a possibility if you can use the 924's torque tube/transaxle to mate with a 1.9 TDI.

VW T25 Van used to use the 1.9D IIRC, in South/North Config.

I think the A4 V6 came in Quattro flavour? Not quite RWD, but they are being driven.
