Good work! Judging by the above a Flying Spur would be low liability by comparison! Looking forward to seeing this one progress as I feel the need to own a 10-cylinder car before it's too late.

Also maybe time you updated the cars in your signature!

I think the Flying Spur might at least not have the issues all related to direct injection, like carbon buildup (which this will definitely need doing), high pressure injectors (which there are 10 of, at over a hundred quid each...) and high pressure fuel pumps (2x). Plus all the other typical accessibility issues you'd have with either engine.

does this mean its running on 5 (ftw) 7 or 8?

Hard to tell right now, 5 if I had a guess!

I have to admit that its a little rougher than I expected. However, as usual, the overall risk of financial ruin is somewhat limited if you consider the value of S8-specific parts alone, which vastly outweight the money I had to put down to aquire what must truly be one of the cheapest, if not the cheapest, D3 generation S8 ever having been for sale. The A8 Sport I've owned earlier this year was already a well specified car, however it certainly didn't come with a fridge!

Neither did it have the top of the line 1000W Bang and Olufsen audio system with tweeters rising out of the dash!

54270734357_7c119e47ad_h.jpg

Plus the extended leather package for door cards. The S8 was also the only version of the D3 A8 coming with carbon fibre trim:

And the S8-exclusive 20" alloys:

You'll notice that this does not have the Carbon ceramic brakes, probably a good thing considering their price.

What it does have is a V10 monster of an engine though, mounted all the way at the front in typical Audi fashion. A somewhat crazy choice for the type of vehicle it was mounted in, but then again it was hardly the only 10-cylinder vehicle during the German horsepower wars of the mid-2000s. At least reaching the rear spark plugs seems less if an hassle than assumed!

Well worth whatever you paid for it just for the tweeters rising out of the dash.

To go full Jason get yourself and the car down to the Sheppey lift bridge for a photo session.

Thanks everyone. I didn't really plan to ever own one of these but I genuinely enjoyed owning the 3.0 TDI. I already started looking for a replacement as the A8 would be capable enough to at least tow a smaller car trailer, then this thing popped up in Rochester.

I could immediately tell that this S8 is in significantly rougher shape compared to the TDI though, despite over 60k fewer miles. It's been off the road since October 2020 and there's usually a reason (maybe just covid?). It'll take a little while before this passes any mot but being able to own the pinnacle of a manufacturer's lineup (ignoring the equally powerful W12) for way under 3 grand is worth the risk I think. It even included the mandatory Black Ice air freshener that can't be missing from any dodgy BMW or Audi:

But this is all that really counts with purchases like this, isn't it:

In other liability news, the Maserati has finally passed an mot and is back on the road!

Let's see for how long, with cars like these you never really know. Taking bets now.

If when you get it running,  it's a lovely smooth engine - i have an s6 with the same engine I've put about 50k miles on in just over 3 years, and other than the fuel consumption its ace.  I think you get another 20 or 30hp over me through a more 'senior' map being as the 8 is top of the tree and although a bigger car,  im pretty sure the 8 is lighter being aluminium, so it ought to handle pretty well too - mines better than you would think for a big lump.

Autodoc is your friend for bizarre v10 only parts - I had the inlet manifold for mine off there when the flap in mine failed for about a quarter of the price of one from the dealer or tps- still made by pierburg same as the audi one.

Enjoy! When you get it going 😁

Nice one. I've already started searching for the part numbers and Pierburg manifolds are not available anymore (for the time being). For 500 quid it would certainly be worth the consideration!

Keep an eye out on autodoc - they floated in and out of stock (and the price floated between about 2k and 1k in their various 'sales')

I had it for about £1050 a couple of years back off there in the end.

I am sure you are aware, if you struggle to get one, you can split them and take the flaps out, then have the light mapped off.  My research suggested you lose a touch of low down power, but if you have no choice, at least there are plenty of horses to start with if you lose a couple.

Manifold change is a pretty easy job.  I carbon cleaned mine by hand while I was in there, which was easy, but ballsaching with how many bastard inlets there are 😂  knowing what i know now, i would have someone walnut blast it instead 🤣

I did read (although don't know if true) that the lamborghini 5.2 v10 manifold fits, although at about 10k second hand, I'm not sure the increased inlet growl is worth it 😂

I haven't looked at prices for walnut blasting yet but saw the video of the wizard cleaning them by hand with a tiny wire brush, which seemed to take about an hour in total. After changing the starter on the Toyota 1UZ nothing scares me anymore. Taking the manifold off this V10 looks like the lesser evil and if I really need new injectors it needs to come off no matter what. And I'm curious to see how much of a difference the lack of flaps would really make. Apparently there's some kind of Russian kit to fit new ones, no clue if it's any good though.

Just conventional discs, I haven't checked whether it was originally spec'd with them, with it being a pretty expensive option that's a little overkill for a car like this I cannot imagine that all too many S8 came with them. I'm surprised the rear calipers are just conventional A8 as well on the S8 apparently.

Btw, if anybody has a clue what this device hanging around behind the battery is, let me know!

Well done that man. I thoroughly enjoyed my stint with a 08 4.2 TDI back in 2020-21. I thought about an S8 on more than one occasion but never had the cojones.
