Great lorries alright. I'd love a B series. Always wanted one with a full sleeper, Cummins or a Rolls lump and a 9 speed. Getting pricier now though!!

I am very tempted by an EC11 while they are still "truck banger money"

Does anybody fancy this....??

290 Cummins L10, 9 speed Fuller, twin steer, full sleeper, all up together with long test, goes really well and engine runs clean as a whistle.... friend is after 5k for it...?

Offhand I can't think of anything better to spend five grand on.

It's gone and replaced by an old XF, the chap who drives it is well north of 70 now so fair dues, it's a bit like driving an old Series 3 Land Rover, you know about it after a few hours!! Great lorry though I wish I'd had the cash for it.

Won't be long! Even showmen appear to be on to the latest ECX examples now.

I love this thread.

Even though I can't drive real trucks, I enjoy faffing about in Euro Truck Simulator 2. I find myself installing a fair number of addon trucks for it too, but I only seek out the shite ones. :D

Hubba hubba just noticed those Pat Collins Trucks, love the EC series ERFs and the 10 looks like a non Celect one.

My train to work in the morning is taking a detour until August and it takes me past a Showmans truck storage yard. Now that the season is upon us there is a fair bit of movement and some crackers are parked there. 2 B series ERF are still in use and there's a really old Foden s23 parked at the back however it doesn't move. There was also a series 1 Volvo FH which was superbly turned out.

That's a belter! Reckon if my old gaffer had not retired and sold up he would have moved into these. He was on the very last E series examples.

I do like a good commercial. I need my HGV licence to 'complete the set' of the 4 main licences, and I'd really like one of the early R-cab Scanias - preferably a 530 Topline. Failing that, an F-series Volvo.

Went to "truckfest south" today at Newbury showground. Lots of brand new scanias and Volvos, but managed to grab a few snaps of the older more interesting stuff.

Dear Boss,

Would it be ok if I swapped my Actros for the yellow Transcontinental seen above?

I spotted this today, I know seamless conversion, and thought Autoshite mobile command centre:

That's the self-levelling device to make sure your tomato soup doesn't run over the edge of the plate

Gentlemen, brace yourselves! Here's some 100% solid platinum-grade truck shite that came out to play at Gaydon today. It's only the near-mythical and amazingly crap Quest 80! This one is so rubbish it didn't even last a year on the road.

And if that wasn't enough, the Leyland Gas Turbine was there too.

Why do most tractors in the UK have a 6x2 configuration whereas on the continent they're all 4x2?

UK construction and use regulations regarding axle weights meant more axles to spread the GVW and as an incentive more axles meant less road tax. When I ran a 3 axle tractor unit coupled to a 3 axle trailer I paid the lowest road tax in that class.

As Vantman,  I had a 6x2 twin steer tractor back in 84, coupled to a 3 axle trailer running at 38 ton gave a VED figure of £1100 if i recall right, you could run a 2 axle tractor at the same gross weight but it would cost you £3200 a year, that was a lot of dosh then.

I have a feeling it was somewhere between the two figures for VED if you taxed the 3 axle tractor at 38 tons but with the option of pulling 2 axle trailers still at 38t gross.

In some euro countries they can run higher axle weights so run at 44 tons or whatever on 5.

Christ a Quest 80. Apparently the chassis on these were so strong that they were very prone to cracking. I recall an article in the December 92 issue of Trucking International where one was still being operated as a Curtainsider. Looked a horrible place to be inside.

The interior is indeed grim and looks like something out of the fifties with unpainted sharp-edged metal everywhere and a massive four-spoke steering wheel. It doesn't seem to have any redeeming features at all and makes me wonder at the management's mental health - someone must have been given that design and said "That looks great, let's put it into production".

Weren't they designed for African countries as a no-frills local assembly vehicle like the fabled Africar?

Posted

In fairness, Quest 80 did a lot of "That looks great, let's put it into production" when they ought to have gone "That's a bloody stupid idea, what were you thinking?!"

Ive got a couple of mental looking 'generic' in-house designed Matchbox Superfast 1:64 scale trucks that look just like that Quest.

I've been meaning to get this done for yonks now: scanning in old copies of Truck, Truck and Driver, and the odd Headlight, Commercial Motor and whatever is in my box of old mags. It's going to take a while - there's loads of them, and I don't have a lot of free time to do it - so I'll leave the link to the album right here and youse can peruse at your leisure.

I'll stick to roadtests and notable launches for now, if there's something else you particularly want to see (say if the model makers want something for reference for instance), let me know and I'll see what I can do. For now, I'll leave you with this...
