You're sort of right but the snowploughs were all six-wheelers. Apparently it's a normal eight-wheeler that had its original cab replaced with one from a snowplough.

Got a good look at this this week. My all time favourite and a bucket list job. Smiths have done our haulage for 30 years. Now in the hands of one of thier long servers and renamed M Laycock Heavy Haulage.

A few commercials spotted at the Powderham show last weekend. While bored today I started researching a bit about the local area, which led me onto road construction and then onto the local quarries that supplied the aggregate etc to the road building projects… as you do!

Anyway, I found this.

Owned by Chichester based aggregate company, Francis. 
The Seddon Atkinson looks brand new in the photo, but lasted only until 1985! Not long at all.

The company had bright green trucks and had quarries in a few places around Chichester (one had a rail link) and they even had a large sea going dredge with suction tube for Solent sand and gravel. The company was bought out by Tarmac eventually. 
Now most of the sites are gone. Either derelict or being developed.

That was indeed a short working life, you could get more out of Iveco! Unless the Seddon was written off in an accident maybe?

Very possible.

I did wonder if it’d been exported to somewhere like Malta, as lots of commercials were back then, but it’s got no export markers. 
Quite an investment for a service life of 6 years or so!

In a similar vein, 

Found this shot of the A27 Chichester Bypass under construction in the late 80’s. 
Loads of road building contractors used these old AEC’s for a very long time, obviously they became non highway use only trucks so no MOT’s! Some were absolutely hanging by this point and were regularly massively overloaded, often doing wheelies when tipping! 
Many of the original trucks were ex Wimpey.

Here’s a photo I found of Francis Aggregates again supplying and pumping concrete for the new Hilsea flyover of the A27 near Portsmouth. 
Plenty of Ergomatic’s and a nice Transit mk1. Francis had good taste!

On Friday last week I was on the M4 heading west and spotted some transporters like that loaded up with classics, going the opposite direction (towards London) there was all sorts on them but one had a Ford Torino in Starsky & Hutch colours on top!

If only the transporter company used classic trucks & trailers to move the cars it’d make an impressive sight!

I love all the cars!  I’m just not keen on moving a load of old classics.  It’s a lot easier moving new stuff.

But despite dreading it for weeks in advance, I do tend to enjoy the couple of days.  As long as it doesn’t rain!

Youd never get away with it nowadays running equipment in that condition. I don’t think the equipment would last nowadays being used abused like that either. 

A few similar AEC’s used for that road building type use were found in an old yard a few years ago with some other road trucks. Pretty sure they’ve been restored to road worthy condition now. 
There were some that had their cabs cut in half for whatever reason too, so driver only!
