Domes shonky autos - Car that lived by the sea in Scotland in rust shocker*

Got a wee bit of time on the Porsche today before I headed off for the weekend. Up on the ramps and front wheel off to check the brake pipe.

IMG20240614142207.jpg.78169452fd39a9cebe393e2418f6effb.jpg

Aye, that's fucked.

I've started the process of getting things freed off. Both(!) bleed nipples are thankfully free. The union on the pipe at the flexi end is going to put up a fight so it's being marinaded on plusgas while I'm away, I'll get stuck into it when I'm back.

The handbrake is the other thing that'll need attention, the drivers side rear does nothing at the minute 😔 Brake pipe first then I'll have a look at it.

Slight update on the Porsche. It's been a bit of a 1 step forward, 2 steps back on this.

Can't argue with the brake pipe fail.

IMG20240614142207.jpg.ef881aebbcc010ca3b5c6a4aa987270c.jpg

A combination of heat and plusgas got it off thankfully and I made a new pipe up from stock

IMG20240617103410.jpg.2fe582ac970b4e05c94ada3d6e1bfcd9.jpg

Step 3 in changing the brake pipe on one of these-remove the headlight...

IMG20240617143125.jpg.d73e1fd1cace2b0d1c416b043995da24.jpg

This allows access to this thingy which the line attached to which, to be fair, makes life a lot easier than having to route it up to the master cylinder. Headlight comes out with a 5mm socket under the "bonnet"

That done I moved onto the handbrake. It had always felt a bit shite, 6 months of sitting outside over a Scottish winter hasn't helped surprisingly*

It's a drum in disc setup in these and thankfully it all came apart ok.

IMG20240617151048.jpg.3cb9cfd1fec4ebde1e4d9e6b7f0bc948.jpg

No, I've no idea why that handbrake isn't working 🫣

At this point I ordered up some handbrake shoes (£23) and had to wait. I stripped the other side down and flushed the cables out and got things moving again.

Fast forward a few days and the shoes arrived. The first side went together fine, the second side I broke the end off a retaining spring 🤬 It still kinda works but I don't want it coming apart at 70*mph and wrecking the inside of the disc.

I did what I'm sure will be familiar to Porsche owners - called the dealers for a price, swore quietly under my breath and then checked the price from "specialists"

Then went back to the dealers and ordered a £25 spring 😳

I also went to my local factors and managed to get a rummage through their brake shoe fitting kits to see if I could find something suitable. Turns out a 2003 on Micra is very close but not close enough 🥲

One side together at least.

IMG20240620161040.jpg.a7a640d76a1e1d98dc3438a80b13f554.jpg

After all this I went back to try and bleed up the front brake. Somehow I had managed to get a leak from the (old) stainless hose that attaches to the new section. FML. 😭😭😭

I'm waiting for a new hose to arrive and then we'll see if we can get the fucking thing MOTd.

In the meantime I fitted the double DIN android auto stereo that arrived 2 days after the fucking thing blew up🤣🤣🤣IMG20240622175058.jpg.f514a5c04eed8ca5061ebb6c2e176263.jpg

And, sadly, I've spent the last half hour or so writing a for sale ad for the Kangoo. As much as I've loved having it it's just not getting used. 1500 miles between MOTs last year. I'll give it a clean up and take some pics and then get it advertised. Sad times but I've got plenty of toys, including a fucking gorgeous Opel Manta shell coming back home soon thanks to @GingerNuttz

Did someone say Kangoo for sale? Colour me interested

Well, after more fucking about than was ideal( has anyone had a fucking stainless brake line fail?) this happened today.

Thank fuck for that! Now, to fix the things that were wrong with it a year ago (yes, I've had it a year🥺) and actually drive it.

New engine feels pokey though 👀

I made the mistake* of taking it out and kicking fuck out of it the other day. It still brings a smile to my face.

I then gave it an oil change and tucked it away. I may give it a wash and take some pics soon...

Here's the text of the ad that will definitely* appear at some point.

-------

2004 54 Renault Kangoo with 2.0 F4R from a Clio 182.

MOT March 2025

I've owned it since February 2020, I bought it converted but not road legal and got it MOTd and then went through it to make it reliable.

Engine on 119k, shell was on 154k when converted.

Belt/Dephaser/water pump changed at 109k with genuine Renault parts when I got it.

Cup alternator setup (new alternator) with adjustable EPAS

KTEK induction kit

Runs 182 manifold and cat and a custom stainless exhaust with a stealthy standard looking tailpipe.

Eibach springs on front with standard Renault shocks.

Eibach Camber bolts

Polybushed wishbones and anti roll bar(Clio 1*2)

New 1*2 calipers last year with Brembo high carbon discs and Brembo pads.

In my time it's had inner and outer track rods, wheel bearing and various other things I've no doubt forgotten.

Polybushed gearbox mount

Lowered on the beam at the rear.

Standard Kangoo drums on rear. Brakes are at least as good as a Clio 1*2 and you don't have those f*cking rear calipers to deal with🤣🤣

Stud conversion on the hubs with Eibach spacers and 15" Clio wheels with Rainsport tyres.

Clio 1*2 seats and dash on the inside. 6x9 speakers in the bulkhead and upgraded speakers in the dash. Bluetooth /DAB stereo

Aftermarket steering wheel currently fitted at the moment but a standard Clio 172 wheel will come with it. The bulkhead isn't concours material but it makes a big difference to the noise levels in the van. LED lights in the rear and tie downs/rails for securing stuff

It's not a show van. I used it for mountain biking, tip runs and it's carried a few engines in its time.

Bodywork is ok for the age/mileage. It got a passenger side wing painted last year. There's some lacquer peel on the bonnet and the drivers wing is getting rusty. It's had a bump on the rear arch (before I owned it)and the filler underneath is showing through. Bumpers have faded.

It's great fun and ace for baiting boy racers while still averaging an easy 30mpg.

I've genuinely loved having it but since getting a works van it sadly isn't getting used.

You missed the most £mportant bit from the non-advert 🤣 - obviously enquiring for a friend etc..

Congrats on the 911, not jealous in any way!

Congrats on the 911, not jealous in any way!

But then it becomes real!

I'm swithering after a good blast in it followed by dumping it on the street outside the MOT station when I picked up the 911 and not worrying about it til I can collect it. It's both a fun and a handy thing

Right, back on the 911 today.

I'd picked up the new spring for the handbrake shoe from the Porsche dealer the day before the MOT. I didn't have time to fit it first though so kept my fingers crossed and didn't use the handbrake on the way to the test.

Today I stripped it down and fitted the new spring

I've no idea how that held together but thank you braiv soljur👍

New one fitted with only a modicum of swearing.

I'll take disc in drum handbrake over caliper handbrakes anyday, as long as the backing plates aren't fucked. On these the shoes locate into the alloy hub carrier.

Here's one for @cort16

Because this has spacers fitted (OMG Stance Yo) it would be a faff to get the wheels on without the BMW alloy fitting doofer that used to come in the toolkits👌

After that I could finally fit the bits I bought from @hpi_matrix in September last year (they arrived the day after the fucking thing shat itself 😳

The drivers door window is supposed to drop when you open it(frameless doors). Mine dropped and then would go back up meaning closing the door was awkward as the glass would hit the seal.

Short story long it's usually caused by the door latch which is from a Mk1 Audi TT. Hpi Matrix sorted me out so today I fitted it

The door card came off easily, partly due to all the trim clips being broken 🙄

IMG20240628160707.jpg.76e9a35d14b8bb755fb26852580f3e5d.jpg

New and old together.

IMG20240628162141.jpg.e5a93861e2bc123952e06b3caa0ed775.jpg

All back together and the window works as it should👌

Looking good, it wouldn't be the same without gouging lumps out your alloy while trying to line up the holes with a screwdriver.

Just as I say I would be willing to replace the shonky SLK with some sort of utilitarian thing like an estate or small pickup... you go and say you might move the Kangoo along!

Probably outside my meagre budget but hnnngh all the same.

Given your past history with small fast Renaults I can only say.

Admittedly, my most fatal mistake was trying to use said small fast Renault as a sensible* daily driver.

Right, final coat of primer on and just a wet sand to 800 grit before paint.

2 side skirts to bond on and then paint it once the compressors are repaired, both compressors failed within a week of each other 😂

The body kit has been an absolute nightmare, months of sanding and filling voids in the fiberglass that would just appear.

Best Manta kit money can buy but you need 4 months to make it fit right or modify your shell to suit it 🤣

Top of the range primer on for the final blocking to 800 grit so the final product should be mint.

Yep, this kit was sold to me as being the best, taken from original Irmscher moulds etc.

I did have a bit of a runaround with the uber cliquey manta owners club trying to find some mythical guy who apparently made the best kits known to man, I got shut down straight away when I messaged him or his representative on earth, probably cos I'd only been a member for a wee while. Sadly the club has that kind of feel to it.

Fuck em, This'll piss em off with a Ford engine 🤣🤣
