Collectioneering tool kit - suggestions?

Recommended Posts

I always feel woefully underprepared when collecting cars from hundreds of miles away with little more than my trade plates and a mobile phone - some of the small things that could go wrong could be sorted out without having to call for assistance

I'm going to try to put together a basic tool kit that isn't stupidly heavy that would accompany me to collections / visits to the auctions etc

Anyone got any suggestions for useful but lightweight things that can get you out of trouble?

Cable ties

Decent gaffer tape

Small can of WD40

.... :)

You could take the whole bloody box........and then find the one vital tool you need is on the bench!

I had a minor ftp in the rover.....just need the su pump points fettling. My small kit of shifter, screwdriver and pliers was everything I needed. Just hadn't got my bloody glasses.......

Rubber coolant hose bandage type stuff.

Like self-amalgamating rubber tape? Brilliant stuff, used it to seal a split silicone intercooler hose on my brothers' SAAB and the repair lasted well until a new one was sourced.

Credit card, lucky rabbits foot, AA recovery

Wonder if one of those lithium jump packs that aren't much bigger than a smartphone would be a better bet than a set of leads

Never used self amalgamating tape before but it sounds like a good idea so I'll add it to the list!

Why has no-one said gaffer tape and cable ties yet?! The key essentials. Or a comprehensive toolbox to some people.

That said, my breakdown cover is all I usually take. Only FTP on a collection caper was a dead alternator on the free Volvo. I wasn't going to cure that roadside.

Did mention those in my opening post ;-)

I'll post up my "road" kit when I get a chance, it's not a light thing, even though it's a smallish box.

All I took was a sat-nav to remind me of the bits of that there London I forgot, my RAC membership card and my mobile when setting out on a 550 mile return trip with the Granada

I do always carry a phone and appropriate breakdown cover but waiting at the side of the road for 4 hours for something I could sort and be going again is what I'm keen to avoid

Case in point - taking a car to the auctions yesterday and the undertray came loose and started banging around, loosening the front bumper with it. Cable ties sorted it but I had to drive a few miles slowly to a supermarket to sort it and if it were fouling on a wheel I'd have had to stop and wait for help

Sod fixing anything.

Jump pack, RAC card, phone charger, few bottles of Co-op Mingebag Springs water, Mars Bar and banana.

Top tip:

They don't let you on planes with gaffa tape and cable ties. Even domestic flights.

Well that would serve them right if a wing started falling off and you could have fixed it for them

I just take a credit card for emergency's but I am going to join a breakdown provider for future trips,

Does anyone know if I broke down in a recovery truck whether they would recover me home or not.

I always have good intentions about taking a toolkit and then end up just taking a phone, which has Green Flag on speed dial anyway.  Apart from the phone I've never needed anything other than water and parcel tape (as a temporary substitute for gaffer tape), which have been readily available en route.

Ratchet straps, nuts and bolts with big washers. lengths of old seat belt and blocks of wood

But there is a certain club I know of where they're almost compulsory

Don't forget to carry a hip-flask, a packet of cigarettes and lighter, even if you don't drink or smoke, if things go badly you might want to start

I've never taken anything other than a smartphone. And food.

Helps if there is a boot sale nearby for anything else I need....

Determination, ingenuity, attitude, folding moped, to try and fail is much better than to not bother.
