Bren Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Are some keys dealer only? Just emailed a company about a spare key for my A6 - I was told main stealer only..Thats £200 + then. Is it true or bollocks?
scaryoldcortina Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 It's true. Anti theft devices aren't covered under the EU parts directive so they can do that if they want to. If you think that's bad try getting a new keycard for a Laguna.
Dave_Q Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Its probably doable outside the dealer just depends if the people you are asking have the kit. I have programmed new keys on a Skoda and and Audi with ebay interfaces and transponder chips. How old is the A6?
scaryoldcortina Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 http://www.vwaudiforum.co.uk/forum/showthread.php/136773-Replacement-key-for-Audi-A6-2006 Looks to be the same trouble as the Laguna. Needs the main dealer database for a pin code, and the eprom isn't reusable so only a new key will code up.
NorfolkNWeigh Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 £300 for a pair of Gaylander2 keys. One day Mrs N is going to get pissed off with standing in the rain for 10 minutes to get in her car, especially when it does its trick of opening all the windows and setting the alarm off when you reach in to press the unlock button on the dash. She'll put that £300 on a card and give me even more grief than normal.Audi keys sound like a bargain.
Bren Posted February 8, 2016 Author Posted February 8, 2016 Car is an 04 A6. I am saying £200, could be more....
scaryoldcortina Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 04 should be doable, it's later ones that are a huge faff on.
Dave_Q Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Is that a c5 or c6 shape as I think 2004 was the changeover? You may have got the immobiliser key code with the car if you're lucky, if not it can be extracted... Vagtacho will get it for you, pirate versions of this are available on ebay, then you can program a new key using vagcom. If yours is a C5 shape you can do it with the cheapest version of the vagtacho and vagcom leads, if its a C6 you'll need the more expensive version. You can program a second hand key with a new immobiliser chip (about £5 ebay) and get a new blade cut, the key just needs to be the same part number as your current one for the remote bit to work. If it's a C5 shape you can probably do it for about 60 quid all in with a second hand key, C6 shape maybe 100. Try more locksmith type places though as id expect one will do it for you for 100 or less. cobblers 1
Bobthebeard Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 £200 for a spare key..... Sheesh.Puts the Autoshite ethos into perspective really! You can buy a car for £50, spend £££££££'s on welding and parts, it may FTP regularly but a spare key will still be a fiver. Errr... Hmmmm. Not much changes. Just the drain down which we pour the cash! As you were.😳 anonymous user and mat_the_cat 2

Or you can pay someone off the internet to do it for 25 quid or so. The rechargable batts give up, or poor contacts occur.
Dave_Q Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 Right have read further and what i said above is for C5 only so please ignore. There are a few places advertising on ebay from around 130 upwards, mainly in London but one in Leeds.
sierraman Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 This is usually the score when they are newish. Once they enter bangerdom the key cutters start knocking out keys. I need one for the focus, £40 at timpsons or £150 at the dealer...
nigel bickle Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 My Lexus key died a few weeks back. More out of curiosity I asked in Timpsons, the high street cobbler and they manufactured a new in for £40. Took 3 attempts, mind anonymous user 1
willswitchengage Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 £6 for my Toyota's key from Timpsons. Two for £10 Uncle Jimmy, mat_the_cat and robinmasters 3

andrew e Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 The dealership might supply a non-remote key reasonably - I know BMW used too.
martybabes Posted February 8, 2016 Posted February 8, 2016 The spare key for the VW cost around 200 smackers. it needs to be coded to the car (or the car to the key). I looked everywhere for cheaper options but in the end ran out of choices other than to pay the main dealer. The Beemer spare key was cheaper but still over £120, and that had to be coded too. Gone are the days when your Ford Cortina worn key would also fit millions of other Fords!
New POD Posted February 9, 2016 Posted February 9, 2016 Generation 1 BINI Key info coming up. A new remote key for the BINI costs £150 plus an hours labour to programme it to your car. A new none remote key costs £46 including Vat. Does the central locking, and starts the car, so no hardship. The nice Lady in the Parts department at Mini in Liverpool, gave me that information.
Lord Sterling Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Hmmm, sounds like a lot of hassle for a spare key. Had a similar problem with the Merc's key, only had one key so I got Timpsons to sort me one out, all other key cobblers refused to cut the Merc key so Timpsons got the job, however, the keys arrived late and they refused to touch the uncut eBay bought keys I brought to them. I eventually got my spare keys. I want to get a spare key sorted for the BMW now so may have to take the non-remote option as I prefer having a spare key, would like a remote to go with it though but not at £120+ EDIT - Just been looking online, found a few videos that show you how to programme a key fob to the car, so I'm guessing then that if I bought a secomd-hand keyfob, programmed that to the car, it'd just be a case of replacing the blade? Would BMW only sell a key without the remote part?
xtriple Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I still can't get a spare key for the Bentley at any price! All done on chassis numbers apparently but the three new keys so far supplied do not fit my car. I don't like NOT having a spare.
Bobthebeard Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Timpsons. Said they will do the spare door and ignition keys for £8 each. For a 1991 Oldsmobile. Will take them a few days to order in the blanks though. Not bad methinks
andy18s Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Ex girlfriend had a 10 plate Primera but had her handbag stolen from her office.....insurance wrote the car off as the cost of replacing the relevant electronic bits was enormous..... Sent from my SM-G920F using Tapatalk
binhoker668 Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Damn, I'm hoping to get a new one for mine. But the local key cutter informs me that he cannae do it and it's gonna be DOLLA...
egg Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Cost me £45 for a new (second) key including programming it for my Fusion - without remote locking - is quite fascinating process watching them do it.
Tamworthbay Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 Get a Capri, sod the spare key, a penny will do my locks! Uncle Jimmy 1
scaryoldcortina Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 I bought a cortina once that came with an old VW key. It worked all the locks...
Pillock Posted February 10, 2016 Posted February 10, 2016 It's not just a Ford thing, my old Polo G40 key let me in the driver's door and boot of my ex's Polo, and her key would open the boot of my car and start the engine. Both keys had taken on the resemblance of a wobbly stick over the years. Mind you and straight key can be used to "rake" a lock and jiggle the pins into place. Hence the move to Ford Tibbe keys being such a high profile thing, Vauxhall doing their deadlocks on the Mk3 Cav, keys with channels etc. Actually a key is pretty shit technology but it is 99.9% secure and has very little scope to go wrong unlike transmitters, contactless tech, retina scanners, fingerprints and all the other tech.
