I think Barnaby from Midsomer Murders hammered about in one of those at one time or another, might have been the facelift one though.

Yeah, I think it was only on the very first episode that he drove a nice N-reg mk1 GLX in State Blue, but straight afterwards he went posh on us by using at least 4 different mk2 Ghia X's for years before getting into Rover 75's and X-Types.

That's great, just another example of how hard Ford went on Mondeo marketing - stung by the MK5 escort response.

Yep. There's earlier examples too, as I believe I mentioned one earlier when I PM'd you. I've got one of those cassettes with classical music on it, but it's a white shelled cassette and not transparent like the later ones.

Like this one, but classical music. I've got the inlay card somewhere.

The Mk5 escort was truly   ‘orrible.  I mistakenly accepted an ‘upgrade’ in the company I worked for at the time - I had a Fiesta XR2i,  on an L plate,  wonderful Ford bucket seats, very attractive wheels and of course heated screen, 1800 engine.,  lovely power to weight ratio.  It was a delight to drive but:    I could get an XR3i, with a job promotion - so I ordered it with the car fleet people.

except Ford announced the Mk5 and my order was switched to an Escort Si  on an M plate (as the XR wasn’t available…).  The mk5 Si had fog lights and stuff but the interior was horrible, clunky controls, white speedo and rev counter, horrible ride and bloody massive doors.  The seats were uncomfortable and the interior all plasticky. It was very noisy.   What a disaster decision.    My Fiesta went to another field engineer and I ended up trying to shift the escort to someone else.

I ended up with an older Mondeo Si  in black ( all our cars were Ford and all were black).   It was lovely apart from the fact the previous driver was a kipper and it stunk.

I am pretty sure I had one of those cassette tapes somewhere!

Yes, I spent too much time driving my dad's Escy MK5, I went down to Cornwall in it from Kent once, never enjoyed it!

My Granda had either a diesel one of those, or it was a Mk4. Either way, it still caught fire as he was leaving the dealers when the loom shorted out against the metalwork somewhere. Took it back after the fire was out, was repaired, and it caught fire again. He bought a Fiat Uno instead.

My dad had to endure the same thing from 1988 to 1991. Except his was Onion flavoured, in Maritime Blue. E74RAF. He just could not break it!

I'd still buy a Mercury Mystique. Would have to be a manual V6 first generation one though. Chances of finding that should be pretty slim...

Still never seen one in the UK, will PM you if I ever do! I'd be happy with a 2litre.

Taxed and back outside my gaff, brake sticking again after the month lay up. It's missed some snow and heavy rain though.

I quite liked those alloys you got on the Si, once offered some from a bloke in the pub. He said to make my mind up quickly as he was ringing the insurance in the morning.

K238 HOO is for sale on FB.

It amuses me that these early cars had both HOO and HAR registrations. Maybe I should buy it and cause a hoo-har.

He has posted on the FoTU Facebook page already so hopefully in good hands

The clutch is pretty high anyway on those, unless it’s unduly heavy or slipping I wouldn’t worry. Some of them seem prone to judder, which is usually the crank end seal.

From the 'cars you don't see anymore' group on Facebook

A very early (25/03/1993) 1.6 Base spotted yesterday, I've posted a picture of it on here before, but it's nice to see it's still going!
