Lidl car stuff

Starts this thursday.

 

I have the battery charger works well but only for partially charged batteries. It has to be above 8volts to charge which to be honest is a bit crap as most of the time my flat batteries are well below this.

 

Car bulbs are decent quality and have massively outlasted usual Halfords stuff and Bosch in the past.

 

Oil filter wrench is really good, used it often and has never failed.

The Bulb kits they do for a fiver are superb, 2x H4's 2x 382's, 1x 501, an interior light, 3 fuses of various ratings in a hard plastic case for a fiver. they also do H7 versions - we have one kit in each car - that price is less than Halfords want for 1 headlight bulb!

I got their graphite oil this week for £2. It's just the stuff for the frequently troublesome bonnet lock on fords. A blast of this every 6 months keeps it good.

The long life ones especially, the focus used to blow a headlight bulb (decent quality) every 6 months or so, I have had their long life ones in now for nigh on 3 years and still going strong!

I have several of their small fire extinguishers too. And the screen wash is good for something like -35.

Bulbs are good as others have said and cheap. The powder fire ext. are OK for car use, got one in each car plus in workshop and house.

The weekend might be too late. If the offer starts Thursday, the best stuff will be out of Stock by Saturday.

The powder ones are good, it saved my van when I managed to set the wiring loom under the dash alight.

netto is the same as lidl,aldi,was bought out by sainsburys,they are up here at heaton park middleton,also at lincoln, etc but not that many stores around.. :-Dthats why i go there you can get the stuff cheap..

Netto buggered off a few years back. Then they re-entered the UK in partnership with Sainsbury's. Sainsbury's don't own them.

Not sure how well the oil filter wrench thing will work, but for £2.99 its worth a punt. Better than stabbing a screwdriver thru and getting it peeing it everywhere.

Is the charger a trickle/maintenance type and does it just do 12v?

From memory of the older Ultimate Speed ones, they were smart chargers that were handy on both 6v/12v but wouldn't get going on a really dead battery.

The one I have is a few years old and does the same thing, but without the digital display.

I'm not sure if the digital one does this, but the old version wouldn't go back to last state after being unplug. So in the event of a power outage, the thing would stop charging as they by default start in standby mode.

Its an intelligent charger, but yeah it does trickle charge when its full.

 

3.8a max charge rate in 12v car mode

0.8a max charge rate in 12v bike mode

and 6v mode

 

The only thing is that you have to set the mode everytime, which may be a pain in the bum if you reconnect it often.

The fire distinguisher looks good. I'll be shooting down my local lidl for the alternator checker thing. Plus the lidl beer, the Excelsior stuff they sell is superb.

Them chargers seem alright, too smart for their own good though.

Jump a good battery onto the dead flat one to get the voltage somewhere reasonable, then connect the "smart charger" and disconnect the good battery and it'll keep going.

If you're really struggling just take all the batteries out of fire alarms in your house and use them to boost the shagged battery. The more the merrier. Probably worth putting new ones back into the smoke alarms after.

 

Oh and yeah the alternator and battery tester is just a voltmeter with LEDS, don't waste your money.

Get a cheap multimeter off ebay. £5 for a basic one, but  Ã‚£20 will buy you a clamp meter with a multimeter and frequency measurement which will test absolutely everything you'll ever want on a car, from battery voltage to alternator charging current, plus they hang off bonnet catches and rear view mirrors.

The oil filter wrench works very well so long as the filter has not been over tightened. Expect the black strap to break in this case. Not the end of the world, you can drill a new hole in the strap. 

 

I spent eight quid for one of these!
