I am biased but id have to say a W124 ;)

Or a 190 is you want something a tad shorter ;)

i wanted a w123 too but you just don't get cheap ones anymore and the cheap ones are normally polished up turds :(

Both are not that easy to get with air con :(

Id steer clear of newer face lift 124's ans they had self destructing wiring looms :(

If you want that classic look but with air con you could try a w202 they are as cheap as chips but search out a good one as they are a little hit and miss :(

Its not a year thing either I am seen 202's that have come off the line the same month possibly even the same week and one will be mint and solid with no real issues whilst the other is a rotten as a pear problem child :(

I like this w124 - bit of a trek to southampton though:

This 190 looks good - but is £2k....but does have air con...

Is air conditioning a must? Good ventilation makes a big difference, get something with good ventilation like a Volvo and you won't miss it, unless you spend lots of time in traffic in the summer.

Just got a bit spoilt with the very effective system in my two Astra G's. Partly because I had these guys do a full system check and re-gas each time (highly recommended by the way) http://aircondirectkent.eu/home/3757643

Not sure if anyone has mentioned it yet, but what about a Civic Mk7?

Don't bother with the diesel (not a Honda engine anyway), petrol isn't that far off economy wise and a solid proper Honda lump.

1.6 for economy:

2.0 for fun that will surprise a few other cars:

Facelift came in 2004:

Come in 3dr and 5dr shapes. Fancy suspension on the back and handle pretty good.

Reliability? Well its a Honda, nothing more needs to be said.

Not got a huge amount of toys, but that means less to break and also electrically they're pretty simple compared to most modern stuff. In fact they are in many ways simpler than the Astra G.

Si.

Before I found autoshite(!) Honda Civic was mostly likely replacement. I've read that the 1.6 does have some vibration through the floor at motorway speeds, and that the lacklustre 1.4 is actually better in that respect.

It would defo be a facelift model though as they apparently do have better noise insulation...

Some are still at silly money though - seen many around £3k.

Who wouldn't love one of these for £995 and just serviced!

Practically AS colours too for extra shite points.

Now you know what the £shop wheel trims were based on.

2nd time had a xj40 tip! MOT history shows I'd be paying for plenty of work next time... ;-)

on that list of advisories there is nothing, nothing that would be a fail next time, or even the time after.

corrosion on coil springs, well, whatever. thats nothing to worry about. mine has slight corrosion there too.

slight corrosion to body, well its 25 years old.

slight corrosion to brake line, well a quick rub over with some wet n' dry or similar, and a smeer of grease over the top, and job jobbed.

its an old car, and there is now't there that would worry me. even new cars can have shit like that needing doing come their first MOT, never mind on a 25 year old, £1k Jaguar.

Surely after five pages of suggestions you have found something you like? Normally I end up buying something on here after about 20 minutes even if I didn't actually want it previously.

Yep. It looks something like this;

genuine classic - looking out for a pre-facelift w124 (saloon), or maybe a Volvo 740 which is inching into this territory (which has advantage of lower insurance and I'd be less worried about parking it on the road). W201 maybe if the right one comes up.

autoshite(?) - Pug 405, Volvo S40 (2000-2004)

non-autoshite friendly modern box - Mondeo Mk3 TDCI (with clutch done!), Civic Mk7
