Booster packs, any recommendations?

I bought one of the £35 cheapy jump packs and will be doing a video on it. I first tried it on the XM, which is rather ambitious I though. Didn't want to flatten the battery, so I just clipped the pack to the leads and then removed the leads from the battery - there's a perk straight away which'll be of interest to anyone with a Range Rover P38. No break in electricity supply.

It wouldn't start the XM though. It was too ambitious.

Repeated the same trick on the Nippa though, and it really did work. However, Mrs DW thinks I've just spent £35 on a really bright torch and isn't impressed. I could do with finding something in between an 847cc petrol and a 2088cc diesel to try and find a happy middle ground.

I've got one I bought from Aldi a few years ago but of course the "charge it once a month to avoid killing the battery" advice was forgotten after the 2nd or 3rd use so it's probably buggered.

I'd expect that charging 16000 mAh or whatever through a USB port will take quite some time. I'd charge by the mains and save USB charging for top-ups or emergencies.

I have 5 amp high power usb ports, also use Asus usb charger plus on laptop.

Charged in about an hour.

Wonder if it will charge itself as it has usb port? :-P

Stats the Ovlov with battery disconected no problems

The little mobile phone sized packs scare me but aparrently work well

I have a £40 "Torq" branded jump pack from B and Q and it's amazing - use it all the time on my fleet of shite and cars I trade which sit around for ages and it's never let me down. Much lighter than the Aldi one I had previously which I was suspicious of but it's far better and more reliable!

They are very impressive. I tested mine (branded only as K10) on a Talbot Express petrol and it fired up with no fuss.

The one criticism I have with it is the length of the jump cables only just served the width of the battery.

Oh, and the Chinglish instructions are brilliant. Only the Chinese can produce a gadget that "can exert supernatural effects" by "clamping your red and balck polantites" !!!

Would that reach the terminals of one of the big 110ah batteries? We've a SnapOn Jump pack at work and that's a good bit of kit but I'd hate to think how much it is.

Not sure. Here is a pic I've just taken, connected to the battery in the Talbot. Hope it helps.

I think cobblers or someone electrically clever like that was explaining why the leads are so short, because that's where most of the resistance will be coming from.

No extra wiggle room there, I'll put one on my list.

£260 ish, but the best of many I've had. The Clarke and Sealey ones tend to last about a year before they get forgotten about and left connected to something to die.

Just about to try one of the magic boxes, having seen it start a customer's Monza from stone dead - not even a flicker from the ignition lights.

Sadly we now live in an era when you need to plug a computer into your car to tell it that you've fitted a new battery or it'll never charge.

As with the P38, can you not use one of these packs to provide constant power and therefore conduct a secret battery change? Or don't drive modern shit alternatively.

Other opinions may be considered, then dismissed. ...........lol

I let the battery go flat on my L322 Range Rover before Christmas, it rewarded me with a failed light control unit and I am still waiting for a replacement by my local Land Rover Specialist.

Anyone got this model of jump starter? https://www.amazon.co.uk/DBPOWER-16500mAh-Portable-Starter-Battery/dp/B00YDZR3ZI/ref=sr_1_5?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1467275725&sr=1-5&keywords=portable+jump+starter

I like the fact it can basically power everything in my life as well as jump start my shite!

No, but by coincidence I ordered the 18000mAh model of the same thing yesterday. Should arrive today - will report back tonight/tomorrow.

I ended up with one of these, it's brilliant and has started my dead 405TD a few times.

We need a shitters best buy please, as I am about to order one as well ;)

Which one is that Billy?

Seems to be the highest output for lowest price.

Not sure that's the best way to pick one of these things though!

80,000 mAh sounds like utter bullshit

Im interested in one of these, am i right in thinking it is less likely to lose charge over time and will not end up with a shorter "memory"?

Here's my old school booster/starter from the early 80's.

It's made in Britain and it still works. A big fan kicks in when you switch it on and it has started everything. I bet the coil is huge as it weighs a ton - but the sturdy wheels and all metal construction means I'll be pushing it round easily, rather that it falling to fucking bits because it's not awful plastic Chinese crap.
