CHRIS1980 Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 The starting issue on my borat pd tdi is still on going and a couple of times now I've had an issue where it judders. The juddering seems like it could be the MAF/ airflow meter. My fault code reader is not picking up faults, now it could be that it's not compatible or there are no detectable faults. In my research it seems Vag com is best...but pricey. Does anyone have any good budget recommendations?
MarvinsMom Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 are fire and matches an acceptable suggestion? and i mean real, live fire? ok, i suggest fire and matches...... Cavcraft 1

Lacquer Peel Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 You can use the free 'lite' version of VCDS for basic fault diagnosis.
bigfella2 Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Yeah, you only have to buy a cheapy eBay lead to get it to work and download vcds for free. On the earlier non pd TDI, if you unplugged the maf then the ECU would guesstimate the values, it will run fine without been plugged in, you just lose a tiny bit of top end power. Should imagine pd engine will be similar. Atleast you could confirm or rule it out as maf related then.
Dave_Q Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Yeah just get the five pound blue cable off ebay, ignore the software that comes with it as it's normally virus ridden. Send me a pm when your cable arrives and I'll send you some known working software. 320touring and John F 2
Rogue trader Posted December 13, 2015 Posted December 13, 2015 Iv had VAGCOM for a few years now and I think for the price there are very good the only thing that limits them is the user. I am still learning stuff now you code, program, reset and test various items and also it can basic read most other makes and models too, we use this in the garage I work at as well very easy to use compared with Snap on or Autologic.
Coprolalia Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I've used VCDS lite for my old golf and the current Octavia as my OBD reader isn't compatible.Buy a £5 lead to USB off eBay, download the software off their website and away you go. It's a bit clunky, but can read codes and clear most things. I think it's free because it doesn't tell you what the code means, but nothing a quick google can't tell you.

Richard Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I have a VAG FTDI cable, would that work with the Dink software and would there be anything to diagnose on a 1996 1.9D Polo?
RoadworkUK Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I'll be firing my VAGcom up today to reset the arsing airbag light on the A4. First time in five years since I last reset it. All because my passenger had the bare faced cheek to move the seat. beko1987 1
Dave_Q Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 The software is just VAGCOM, either an older full version or cracked lite version. Is the polo an sdi or mechanical pump? If mechanical not much to see. Richard 1
320touring Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Richard the Polo is mech pumped so nowt to see. not even a low fuel light! Richard 1
sierraman Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 What do you need them to retract the calipers on a Passat eg into service mode?
warren t claim Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 I've heard stories off my auto electrician about fucking up the ECU by using eBay cables and £20 boot sale laptops. 320touring 1

Dave_Q Posted December 14, 2015 Posted December 14, 2015 Depends what you're trying to do, minimal chance of borking anything with vagcom if it's just reading codes, I suppose you could recode your immobiliser or something but you'd have to be trying pretty hard. Happens more often with remaps but mainly from people writing files they found off the Internet that aren't right for their car.
omegod Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I have the ELM 327 cable that works with most software, would it work with VAGCOM ? if so could someone pleeeeeeeeeeese send me a link to a copy that won't destroy my old lappy

sloth Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 i have the knock off vas bluetooth jigger. works great.
trigger Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 This is something I'm also interested in at the moment as my Toledo has started to play silly buggers. I cleared the EML a few times now with a OBD2 reader I've borrowed off a friend (I've got a P0411 error) but I've now downloaded the "Torque" app of the Play store for my phone and plan on running it via the Bluetooth. I bought a Bluetooth device of eBay for £4.35 but my phone wouldn't connect to it so i got a refund back on that and ordered another one for £7 but I'm expecting the same results TBH. Anybody got any recommendioms for cheap Bluetooth OBD2's?

trigger Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 I'd be up for some of that but I haven't got a laptop.
Eddie Honda Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 but I haven't got a laptop. Bag a used one. My Tosh cost 40 yoyos (which isn't even 30 quid) trigger 1

trigger Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 Oh yes please John! If you don't mind. I've got a problem where the car runs really lumpy and poor when it's cold and when it's warm it keeps hunting when on idle between 500-800rpm and every now and then I get a smell of flumes and a eggy farty smell come into the cab and it doesn't feel quite as powerful. I don't know much about these 1.8T engines and I could end up spending a fortune that i don't need too.
twosmoke300 Posted December 15, 2015 Posted December 15, 2015 They are prone to the pcv valves failing . The last one I did had two . One small one under the inlet fannymold and a bigger ufo thing at the back ( right ) of the rocker cover trigger 1
