Noises that were common but havnt heard in years.

To kick start this epic Fred.

1) Pinto cam rattle(could call out a pinto with my little eyes shut)

2) milk float hum and rattle

3) inertia starter motor "run on".

Posted

1 and 3 are timeless

4) Cvh tappet noise

5) Whoosh of viscous fans

6) fan belts squealing

Posted

3) inertia starter motor "run on".

I hear that every morning.

However, you don't hear people cranking and cranking and cranking any more.

No Lagunas round your way then?

Peugeot rear end squeak-creak

I was going to say chronic tappet rattle but there's some proper nails around here that would would put many a knackered smoky old pinto engine or even Talbot to shame.

Morris Minor farty gear changes

Yes this!!  And also the amazing and uber-recognisable sound of a Maxi coming.

I used to be able to guess loads cars coming from their sound when I was wee.

I still find the sound of an oncoming transit 2.5di very satisfying.

I am a very sad man.

You should see my records...

Whining Voith transmissions in buses, esp. the brake bands when decelerating.

The sigh of Leyland and Volvo bus brake chambers when inching along in heavy traffic.

The rasp of a 1970's Fiat exhaust.

Posted

1/ Cars with 6 volt starters turning over slowly and J-U-S-T starting (early Daf 33 owners eat your hearts out!)

2/ Heater fans squeaking on cold mornings when asked to blow slightly warm air onto frosted windsceens.

3/ Medium wave radio signals blocked by interference.

4/ Cassettes slowing to a total stop, thereby warning you of a mess inside the player....

Just a few.....

Minis with annoyingly delicious sports exhausts being ragged around EVERYWHERE. Buses that sounded proper.

The jingle jangle of keys followed by a rough turning motion to open a car door

The slow fast slow fast rubbery squeal of a car window opening

The sound of a car door slamming shut followed by a metallic reverberation through the cars body lasting approximately twenty seconds

Alternator buzz interference changing frequency through rpm on AM radios

Anyway as mentioned above the noise of a fiesta 950 is very nice and if someone tells me how to put a video up I'll make one

NNNtsssNNNtsssNNNtsss [doppler effect]OIWANKER![/doppler effect]

That 90s Max Power pre-asbo kind of antisocial behaviour coming from many a low rent hot hatch that is really just a pov spec granny wagon with a partial body kit.  Predates even Barryboys.

6) fan belts squealing

The fan belt on the Perodua squeals if I have the temerity to switch on the headlights and the heated rear window at the same time.  Doesn't do it for long though, and the alternator is such a cock to get to that I've decided to just live with it.

The roar of a Police SD1 2600 accelerating hard down a London street, these days BMW and Skoda dizzlers are practically silent and congestion and health and safety means they rarely go much above 40/50 mph.

The clang of an early XJ40 starter.

I also preferred the exhaust sound of a twin tailpipe 325 or 528 BMW over today's fake NASCAR V8s.

I once caught my finger in a Perodua's aux belt, and it took it on a delightful whimsical journey betwixt aforementioned belt and alternator pulley.

The sound of an engine with too much advance on the timing trying to restart itself when switched off.

VERY!  I nearly got flattened by a Bedford TK coal lorry walking home once so I know that noise well, followed by the distinctive noise (and smell) of all the wheels locking up then coal scattering all over the place and the sound of the engine labouring to make a getaway.  Amazingly the driver didn't hit me, the car that was stopped at the crossing in front of him, the bus stop or the oncoming traffic.

I get excited every time I see a TK, which is rarer and rarer these days.  The last one I saw was a horsebox travelling very slowly on the A1 earlier this year.
