Ford Mogadondeo Mk1

Early days, but I can see myself getting attached to this. Just been looking in the service book, and every year bar 2011 has a stamp at a mixture of 6 and 10,000 intervals. Last documented cam belt was 46,000 in 2004 so this may be a good opportunity to break my cam belt cherry, it's now on 108,000.

Is it a Zetec then? They're pretty reliable, not much in the way of inherent catastrophic failures unlike most other engines of the era.

Don't think you need much in the way of special tools for cambelt either, garage did mine but just as an in and out routine job.

Nice buying!

I love finding proper genuine cars like this, they usually cost roughly the same as all the crap out there for sale but are 1000x better.

Was it local Rob, im guessing yes for a school night collectage?

***** IMPORTANT NOTICE *****

See that bright red LED?

Look at it really closely next time it stops flashing. When it goes out for the last time, wait a few seconds. The little bit of LCD that it hides behind goes opaque so you can't see the bare LED any more.

Jizzed all over the place when I first noticed that.

I can see this being the first raffle I enter.

In Bagshot, so an hour on the train and then 50odd miles home after I stopped for grub to let the traffic ease off. I bid on it after a few beers last Friday, but wasn't too far gone to put in a stupid max bid. I also considered this one which is probably in better condition, but wanted an estate really.

Think I'll drive to work tomorrow as although parking is a ballache i haven't seen it in daylight yet.

Very, very nice buy indeed. Mondeo + Autoshite = Happiness :)

I had one of these about 8 years ago - very similar, but a 2.5 V6 instead of a 2-litre.  Was a lovely old bus to drive, but I didn't find the (moderate) increase in performance was worth the heightened fuel guzzleage over the smaller engine.

Spent 5 hours cleaning this today as it was minging. Underneath it all there's quite a nice car. I'm no cleanliness freak, but this sort of thing is a bit rank

Now habitable

Despite all the top-specness there's no mudflaps, and the arches need a good go as the dirt is thick under there. Only a small bit of rust on the OS rear though so atleast it hasn't rotted them out.

WARNING. Shit photo content. It was dark so these are the best I could do. I took the headlamp and indicator protectors off so the already shit lights are better now.

A pic of the stereo for the Ford pervs, the CD changer is in the boot.

One thing I noticed when cleaning was how short the bonnet is, and the engine really is packed in there (a precursor to all moderns basically!).

That looks a really comfy cabin for long journeys! It's come up really well. How do the seats compare comfort wise to the mk3 cav?

Posted

That's the "Mondeo Gold" sound system, which I recall was a serious piece of kit in the early-mid 1990s.

I was given a demonstration of its capabilities on the Ford stand at the 1992 Motor Show, not long before the Mondeo was introduced. "Steam" by Peter Gabriel hasn't sounded better since :)

Pretty good, although Cav seats are better, I find they just fit me perfectly. Everything falls easily to hand and it feels quite a cosy driving position but not too cosseting, whereas the Cavalier has lots more space especially the footwells. It's interesting comparing the two as i drove both today and the Cav does feel it's age which is obvious I suppose being an older design. Plus it reminds me how poor the steering is, feels a bit leaden and hard work whereas the Mondeo's is nice and direct which encourages you to chuck it about more. I do find that aspect of the Cavalier frustrating as it hinders your enjoyment a bit when you want to rag it, which is often as the engine is a corker and despite being an old crock has more grunt than the Zetec.

So it would be a tough decision if the fleet manager offered me a shiny new Mondeo in 1996 to replace the ageing Cavalier. I'd be tempted to buy it off them for 'er indoors to use and have both!

I thought Mondeo Gold used the 2008?

Mind you, the system above is plenty good enough, except the rear speaker placement in the doors was really stupid. Should have been in the rear parcel shelf supports like on every other car.

That's scrubbed up well. My dad had a 2.0 LX hatchback as a company car, the engine was pretty rough even then and I remember reviews of the time criticising it but it did go well.

Alas, it'd been abused for 2 years before he got it without so much as a wash or air in the tyres and the lack of any servicing from new meant it gave no end of problems. I've always fancied one since though, funnily enough it replaced a 1.7TD Cavalier and felt like a spaceship in comparison.

I've been having naughty thoughts about this for a few days now.

Same colour as my old man had back in '94.  Price seems a little ambitious, but then if it was PE1 with Megawhite background it'd be £1795.

Only thing that puts me off is the 1.6.  But then AUTOSHITE.

WOWZERS.

Everything about it is just so right. Absolute top buyage of the highest order. FATHA had a '93 Ghia in Nouveau Red, one of the first off the production line. That had the door open graphic computer too - I think I still have it as I salvaged it from the car when it was scrapped in 2005.

I'm 99% sure this was a Ford press vehicle, it has the correct-font number plates and the Essex registration.

That looks bloody brilliant.

Good work cleaning out the estate RobT. What's the loadspace like on those?

Vast for the size of the car. The seats were folded down when i bought it and it's a good wide area, loads of builders dust in the back too so it's been used as a van substitute, hence the mucky interior.

MOAR observations. Done 140 miles today and considering its purpose as a rep vehicle it seemed strained on the motorway at 80, better to just sit at 65-70, and needs to be revved a fair bit to make progress. I'd imagine the 1.6 above is a bit glacial!

Edit: the history gubbins shows it as being registered in Chelmsford, so the press car thing is possible.

Want want want want want want want want want want want want want.

Even though Rob dosen't know it yet, I'm buying this. :-P

Well it'll definitely be up for sale early in the new year, as the Daimler is soon to drain my wallet. Running two dailies is no longer an option now I've got a big cat to feed! Should be worth it though, I hope...

Posted

Have always fancied a Mondeo Mk I or II myself, seats actually look very comfortable (and were from a dim memory of driving one twenty years ago.)

Better ride than the Cavalier or similar Rob?

Posted

It rides much better than the Cavalier Carl, although I'm sure the suspension bushes in the Cav are knackered as new shocks hasn't improved things much. Seats are fine although now it's gone chilly the leather is COLD (and the driver's heated seat doesn't work).

Posted

Well it's doing 50% better than the 605, both its heated seats don't work!
