In general, what do you like about modern cars?

Much less noise, vibration and harshness.

OBD-II. Scantools are evolving into ruggedized tablet computers, which is making for simplified repairs.

Tolerances are so much closer, that any oil seen on the outside of an engine is considered unacceptable, even after 60,000 miles. I remember when a complete absence of oil on the outside of an engine meant that it had been installed 5 minutes ago.

Some of the tech is nice. Although I confess to being a Luddite at times, I mustard mitt Bluetooth integration, steering wheel-mounted controls and even paddle shifters could make a 7-year loan a bit easier to rationalize...

Air bags, crumple zones, proximity sensors and LED lighting all tick my boxes as well.

But so does working air conditioning, and tires that grip, and a roof that won't leak...&c.

I like the easy preventative maintenance.

And the reliability.

nothing much really,

pas and antilock brakes are avalaible* in s lot of older models,

but tbh there isn;t anything appealing about a modern car

except the Daimler Super 8 that was on show at the NEC in march.

it was on a 58? plate, had done 5700 miles and had i guess every extra, well it had picnic tables AND tellys in the back of the front seats, and it had been owned by someone who cared enough for it to go for a service EVERY YEAR!

the draw back?

the £35000 asking price.

it was lovely though........

Bodyshells that resist rust (on the whole) superbly. Probably one of the least appealing things about any older car is how well they don't do this. I can take or leave a lot of other features, but this is one I really like on a modern.

Remote central locking

I like how modern cars feel much more solidly built and feel more rapid at lower speeds. And as brookjm...soz...Essexlad says, less rust.

In general, not much. That's why I come on here...

Simplified repairs? Not under the bonnet of any modern car I have seen! There isn't space for a hamsters goolies let alone a hand.

For me it's the lack of rust as mentioned above, you can buy a ten year old without it having been repaired ten times already.

Not having to carry a box in the boot with a tin of oil, 5 litres of water, spare points and condensor and maybe a spare coil too.

I've found myself using the speed limiter thingy on the newish focus more and more.

Get into the city, set 30 and bimble past all the cameras without a care @ 62.9 average mpg.

no ignition points to set

variable speed intermittent wash-wipe

decent headlights

Bluetooth

iphone able to connect to the ice so I can play my own songs or downloaded podcasts

hoods that don't leak

anti corrosion measures

4 speed heater motors

abs

central locking

elec windows

that's all, really

220hp, 40+ mpg, 32 gb data card with several hundred albums, perfectly comfortable for the entire overnight drive from Birmingham to Dover then Calais to Le-Mans after a full day at work.

I like my Octavia.

The ability to blend into the background

I could never have an affair as someone would be bound to see one of my cars in the wrong place...

Modernity is relative, I suppose. My XJ40 does most of the modern wish list, with low NVH, a solid feel, automatic transmission, cruise control, air conditioning with genuine and very effective climate control, illuminated leather trimmed sun visors, a heated front and rear screen, ABS, remote central locking which works the electric sunroof and windows should you leave them open, together with lighting your way in the dark with its headlights, an airbag and electric everything - it even has electric adjustment for the head restraints and memory settings for both front seats, the driver's programmable on the key. It does show its BL heritage with various kinds of leaks in diverse places and rust of course, so all is not lost.

when i think of modern i think of some 80's but mainly 90's designs built up till about 2004ish, anything made after 2005 is new as far as i'm concerned

this age range is perfection to me, as said rust prevention is much better, and we gained massive improvements in safety handling brakes power economy reliability and durability

the new cars increasingly gain just that bit too much electronic and emission control tat with IMHO not much gain over the 90's designs which can in most cases be fixed by the home mechanic or any decent indy

i'm racking me brains trying to decide what would be better on a 2015 car than one made 12 years ago, honestly there's nothing since that could tempt me, save maybe a 2104 Landcruiser 70 series which apart from the 120 series 4.0V6 engine now fitted is virtually unchanged from one made in 84, i'd like one purely because it is still the same car (though featuring ABS now, and they've put some plastic on the pressed steel dash, you you modernists Toyota) sitting high on its rear leaf springs and i could seriously rustproof the chassis and it would see me out.

The Nissan Leaf has a heated steering wheel. I like this. And electric cars in general. Everything else can FRO.

You turn the key and it starts.

You don't have to check oil/coolant/brake fluid/clutch fluid EVERY morning.

You don't need to tighten the exhaust manifold/downpipe nuts every other day.

They don't usually do 3800rpm at 60mph in top gear.

CUP HOLDERS.

Bits of metalwork don't vanish over the course of a damp night.

You don't need to keep a full sized tool kit, jack, axle stands, fire extinguisher and spare auxiliary parts in the boot and have to use them several times a week.

You don't have to get out the car and hit the O/S/R light unit to get the indicator to flash.

The handbrake works.

The heater/demister works.

Working horn.

Not having an engine that generates 50bhp but gets 34mpg at the very best.

My 2003 Volvo V40 is still rolling with minimum maintenance. Everything still works. Noticed a rust bubble the other day though. Gutted - maybe time for a rebuild/restoration.

Generally my favourite features are really good audio, really nice seats, good heating/air conditioning and really efficient autoboxes. I also like stop/start as a concept, though would prefer range extenders that operate for minimal local pollution yet give way to the IC engine for sustained high-speed cruising, at which point they're relatively clean and efficient. Urban crawl is what hits mileage.

After 2 250 mile trips in the Cherry this week I would like a silent alternator, a working radio and a 5th gear.

All of these can be sorted but I am tempted to put the working radio in the glovebox so I can get a modern one with bluetooth.

Don't get me wrong... I'd rather a shonky old Volvo or something most of the time, but I do like...

Digital Radio

6th Gear

Sport Mode

Warranty

The finesse with which it manages the speed limit*

And the fact there have been no FTPs in either of my two moderns

Does an AMG G63 count as modern? 'cause it's got all the stuff I like, but also thin pillars and feels pretty connected to the road/field/mountain... it's my dream "daily".
