New MOT History site now live.

I did see a Freelander on Gumtree where the tester ballsed up the MOT retest and managed to add 30,000 miles to the car since the Fail. Nice work!

I've been enjoying this site in conjunction with Ebay.

Mrs Sills has mostly been staring at me and shaking her head.

Apparently I have hit new lows in my internet usage, she said "can you not look at weird porn instead of car crap"!

Posted

Had a look at Prince Charles' Aston. 18,000 miles from new, passing with no advisories every time.

I found myself in the unusual situation of being a passenger on the M6 the other day. This site is great for passing time in traffic. You can play games of 'spot the car with the highest miles', and 'spot the advisories' (e.g. iffy number plates).

It's surprisingly easy to spot cars that are neglected and fail their MOT every year.

Fatha_Norbert's old company 406 when he got rid at 3 years old in 2003: 127,000 miles

Same car in March 2015: 118,000 miles

You've got to hand it to the barber here - that's some haircut, it hasn't reached the previous mileage level after 12 more years on the road!

At the current rate of usage, it'll reach it's old mileage level in 2019 - 16 years after the first time round.

Are you on Kingdom FM? I randomly remember hearing someone on the radio talking about Lilly Allen and Paul Daniels on this topic.

Guilty. ðŸ‘Â

Just had a quick look on there - nice to see my old CRX Del Sol still going strong (even though they're still listing the mileage incorrectly)

Having a browse of the stock of local dodgy car dealers. Stumbled across this rather tidy looking MG TF...

This sets alarm bells ringing...

QUICK SALE, PART EXCHANGE TO CLEAR, DRIVES GOOD, BODY AND INTERIOR VERY CLEAN, TYRE CONDITION GOOD, SOLD AS SEEN, NO WARRANTY

No mention of MOT. I've seen the state of some of the crap they sell with a fresh MOT, so this must be bad. Stick the plate into the MOT history site...

For added LOLz I phoned the guy up and asked about the MOT situ. He was very polite but insisted it'd come in part-ex without an MOT and he didn't know what would be needed. That could be true, I guess.

Check out this delightful Celica from the same seller, finished in 'double body colour'.

The MOT history isn't too appalling, but this from 2007...

Advisory notice item(s)
accident damage to offside door, offside rear panel and nearside spare wheel well.

Will anyone really pay a grand for a Celica with a slipping clutch that's clearly been in a smash?

Am I the only one who thinks this site is a bit of a double edged sword?

Advisories over the last few years seem to be more and more inconsequential. For example, for years I got ‘rear coil springs corroded’ or something similar (I take a look and see some surface rust - fancy that on a 13 year old car?). Then off to a different test centre a couple of years later – same springs, no advice.

Given joe public’s lack of understanding of how a vehicle functions and apathy towards condition and maintenance I totally understand why the testers do it, but with a tool like this selling a car will become even more of a trauma. Every mouth-breather can now show up with a print-out and start chipping the price based on tester’s opinions – which we all know will differ - and ancient history.

For years now I buy principally on condition, and my assessment of the current owner, not paperwork or numbers like age or mileage. What’s happened before is in the past and you can’t expect perfection at the bottom of the pond. Sure I’ll be checking out potential purchases – but taking it with a pinch of salt and preparing to upset a few ‘experts’ when it comes to selling.

Anyone else unable to access this? It doesn't give me a reason why, but it says the service is 'unavailable'

Posted

Yeah, I agree with that - looking over some of my cars' histories, I can see where 'major' things have needed doing but I know for a fact that I got them sorted out properly. I suppose if someone (who knows little about such things) saw multiple fails over many years on small items, they might suddenly get cold feet over a potential purchase.

Then again... the reverse could also be true. I mean, why would a split gaiter be a bad thing anyway... ;)

There are two URLs - google gives you this one https://www.gov.uk/check-mot-history-vehiclewhich doesn't work (unavailable), the first page of the thread gives you https://mot-history.net/ which does.

I wish they would FRO with their definition of a subframe. My Corsa had an advisory for corrosion there but it's actually the rear axle. It doesn't even have subframes.

The 'coil springs rusty' advisory annoys me too. The metal of a coil spring is 1/4"- 1/2" thick and you can only see surface rust on them anyway. They fail because the metal fractures due to the stresses of operation.

Also, is it still deemed acceptable to chop a spring but not to have a little bit broken at the very top or bottom?  :?

I looked at a Focus on Autotrader, it was a lovely looking thing, looked it up and it's on it's way out... Corrosion to rear susp mounts, fuel neck corrosion, loads of advisorys for shit like brake pipes. Loads of shit jobs that need attending to, not nice easy shit like a track rod end or a bottom arm.

Put my old Rover 45 diesel through it. It kept scraping through MOTs with armfuls of advisories, and I managed to somehow get £500 for it in part exchange.

It looks like the garage used it as a workhorse for a year after I traded it to them, adding 16,000 miles to it between the MOT it was given after I traded it in, and the following year's MOT. The last valid MOT it had was in Sept 2013....

However, the MOT history goes back a number of years, and I am pleased to say that it passed cleanly in 2008!

But the MOT tester wasn't impressed by the lovely agricultural L-series 99hp diesel engine....

The 'coil springs rusty' advisory annoys me too. The metal of a coil spring is 1/4"- 1/2" thick and you can only see surface rust on them anyway. They fail because the metal fractures due to the stresses of operation.

The manufacturers coat the springs but the coating comes off and water gets under and rust festers underneath

They also put a rubber sheath on the bottom which holds all the muck in.

This is a real Volvo. 2300cc with a stage 2 garrett turbo bolted to the side of a B230 4 cylinder engine with manual 4 speed with overdrive gearbox and it's rear wheel drive. MOT expired last week, Starts and drives very well indeed, Sought after half leather interior and 5 spoke alloy wheels, Low mileage for the year and for one of these engines. I've had these with over 800k on the clock and still sweet. The faults with this car are : A few marks commensurate with age and use, missing fuel flap, sagging roof lining (it's fucked) and it needs cleaning

Sounds perfect......

Reason(s) for failure

offside Registration plate lamp not working (1.1.C.1d)

nearside front Body or chassis has excessive corrosion, seriously affecting its strength within 30cm of the body mountings Floor holed by seat mounting (6.1.B.2)

Our focus has various advisories on corrosion.

I would imagine if I dont tend to it soon it will be a fail. Which will mean the bridge.

That would have been standard fare for five year old car in the early 80s. I bet the Focus you're looking at is at least double that age. The word corrosion is a funny one; it sends some people into spasms of panic and woe, whilst others accept that unless the car is terminally rotten, it won't necessarily cost a fortune to put right.

I will defirnitelylyly use the MOT checker site when I next buy a car, but will also take it with a pinch of table salt.

This amuses me, I get a load of stick at work (I'm sure I'm not alone here!) for driving a 'shit old heap' of an Almera. I take great pleasure in pointing out to anyone within earshot that in the 4 years and 70k miles we've had it, it has never failed an MOT, and only picked up 2 advisories which were rectified by the next test. I don't think there is a single other car in the office car park that can boast that.

Well just got a nice surprise,

The LPG Rover of Doom is in for its MOT today, but not yet heard from the Garage,

Just thought I'd run it through the History site to see previous MOT', and its already updated.

Its only gone and passed with an advisory of escape of exhaust gases. (Think they may be being a little generous on that as its blowing quite badly, and I was expecting it to fail on that)

Any hoo back to 40p per litre for LPG for another year at the least.

Just going back to check I put the correct reg number in  :-D
