I got this.. and I'm un-modifying it.

Last week I decided that now is about the time to buy an original MK2 Golf 8v GTI before they all disappear.

I love a modified golf as much as the next man, but I've said for a while now, that a good MK2 GTI is probably my ideal daily driver.

The 5 door shells don't look as nice as a 3 door, but apparently more triangles, so stiffer.. that's why VW used them for the G60 Limited apparently.

In 8v guise, they're pretty bullet proof.  The interiors are very hard wearing, the body tends to be decent, they made them in some lovely colours, they carry reasonable amounts of people and shopping, don't look out of place in a works car park.

Problem is, they're starting to be appreciated now.

A few years ago, all the cool kids bought em, slammed em, ABF'd, VR6'd or 20vT'd them, and while I appreciate this very much, it means that a good one is hard to find.

But..a friend of the family is into his golfs, and he's mentioned that he was due to go on holiday and could use some money.. and that he's just bought a MK3 VR6 that he wants to do..

So this, is now mine and waiting to be collected.

So, the plan is to basically sort out the exhaust, MOT it and swap out the wheels for the stock 12 hole steelies, and the interior for the correct yellow and blue tartan one, rather than the half leather'd rainbows that someone had done.

I'll sort out the knocks and paint using one of them smart repair places, get those horrible indicators changed for proper orange ones, and revel in the fact I've got a silver-grey MK2 90 spec, that everyone is going to assume is a driver, because no one knew that they did them in this colour, in that year.

I figure I've got a mental beetle to finish, and a van to do.. so this should give me a classic fix as a daily, while the 8v engine plods along at a reasonable pace getting me to and from the place I make my money in.

And.. I quite like a standard golf these days.

Also means I can get rid of the MKIV I've been using.. because basically, that thing is horrible.

They are a cracking daily, there are loads coming up to 200k and still going, everything is strong and easily fixed. A few niggles like rear calipers, 2nd gear synchro etc etc but none are going to break the bank. I have ran two 8v's and a 16v and loved both. They are getting pricey, but then people are asking 5K for a clean 205 gti.

There is a bit of VAG hate in this place, but i am sure people will appreciate a de pineappled, standard golf,

I was never a fan of these back in the day but they're growing on me now that they're becoming rarer. I do prefer the small bumper look though.

I have to day I like that one pretty much as it is, personally I'd change the indicators and number plates and that's about it.

As one of Autoshite's closet Mk2 Golf (factory spec) fanciers, I also applaud you.  That'll look right nice with the spruce up you're suggesting, looking forward to the update.

It will probably be worth more in standard spec too.

Nice small and hopefully uneventful project :)

Could do with a few cans of satin black and an angle grinder.

Other than that, I love it.

ONLY because of this:

And the fact that these people who do this are allowed to piss in the gene pool.

Lock up your daughters.

I had a lovely mk2 gti when I was 18. What that equates to is bumrape insurance premium, but it was worth it. Unfortunately someone decided that they wanted it more than me and took it one night. The police found the doors and engine along with other sporty VWs in a warehouse.

There is a bit of VAG hate in this place...

My VAG-hate is not only because of the modified shitboxes pictures above. My hate for all VAGs is because Austria is THE VAG-land. Every giffer drives a Golf (70)Plus or an Audi Q3. Almost every man who wants to be liked by his co-workers or neighbors owns an Audi. Every young family has an A4 Avant because they are so "stylish and sporty", all the businessman who tailgate you on the Autobahn are sitting in an A6/A8 and the bodybuilder next door has a white A5 with 20 inch rims. Old ladys are doing their shopping in a Skoda Fabia, the local council has a huge number of Skoda Yetis, all the young ladies get a Seat Ibiza from their dad when they graduate from school.

Austria = VAG-country. There is such a huge peer pressure in our Austrian car-society that people who want to be respected by their co-workers or friends have to have an Audi or at least some other VAG-shit. And I think they are highly overrated. So that´s the reason why there is "a bit of VAG hate" in front of my computer.

Looks like the previous owner was constantly dropping fags in his lap and pissing himself. Grim thought.

Having owned a Driver, I can't say I'm really a fan of these at all. I like the solid feel, but that's about it.

However, this isn't about me and I have to say I fully approve of your plans. Please also sort out the rear wiper parking. I was never sure why people started to make them park in the wrong place.

Sounds to me like the perfect country to own a shonky yank in.

Ignore any haters and just enjoy! Welcome aboard.

Those BBS wheels seem to be quite popular (my mate has them on his Mk2 diesel) and hats off to you for de-twatting the car.

So I guess you don't drive an Audi then Lukas? :-D

I had a subtle steel wheeled mk2 Jetta GTI, looked pleasingly giffer but went bloody well.

Alright Dave! Welcome to the brown side.

Saw this on FB, thought it looked nice and honest.

Good plan, I used to have a white 1.8 driver 3 door, I had a right laugh with that, I tuned the arse off the engine with big carbs, cam etc, the thing went like stink, i soon got bored and flogged it on.

Posted

There is something "right" looking about these in standard form. I am a huge fan of stylised steel wheels too. GREAT TASTE.

The last Mk2 Golf I drove was a 1.6 diesel van. I'd consider a 1.6 diesel van...

I have a question for our resident Dubbers in disguise.

It appears to me that the stepchild being trampled in the whole VAG FWD stampede is the Scirocco.

Whereas Golfs usually command strong money, Sciroccos in comparable configuraton/condition can be had for a lot less. This seems a bit odd, because usually sporty coupe versions command a premium over saloons. If this is indeed the case, why is it? Or is this only my impression?

Nobody can explain the mysteries. Not even Derek Acorah can help you here.

Corrados dipped in price for a while but have come back strong, back in 2000 I decided £750 was too rich for a tatty but solid one. Sciroccos have yet to un-dip.

If it's a rusty old panel van with a VW badge on the front it's worth at least 5 times the price of an equivalent rusty old panel van.

I can't speak for everyone here but I would like to think the issue some have with volkswagens not that they're seen as good cars by their fans, but that they won't entertain the credibility or indeed existence of everything else. Same is true with fords to an extent.

Nice mk2 by the way, quite like the cross spokes myself, although bmw e30 ones look better imo.

Sorry. I'll take my pineapple with me

VW people are an odd crowd.

I've got my fair share of modified VW stuff as well, including a 1303 beetle that I'm working on with an Impreza Turbo engine out the back.. but it's a "fat chick" and therefore less desirable than the earlier, worse cars.

I've had two rocco's now.. I'd have another in a heart beat.  They're on the up price wise.  Problem is the MK1 Scirocco was a lovely car but it's almost as if the Italians sold rust to the Germans along with the styling on them.  The MK2 is basically the same MK1 golf platform, so was long in the tooth at inception.. as a result the MK2 golf platform (Golf and Jetta) were much prefered for general use, quality, ease to work on and such like.

If you want a nice VW Coupe, spend the money on an early 924 2.0.
