Cars wearing plates too new for them?

Recommended Posts

I'm not on about pre 2001 cars with post 2001 style plates, or cars wearing reg numbers they can't possibly have been made at the time of, like a 64 plate Morris Minor for example, we've had the late registration madness thread, what I'm talking about here is cars which were still in production so the plates are actually correct but don't look it or look too new for the car:

For example I saw an 03 plate VW Lupo today and thought 03 was too new for a Lupo but yip they did actually make/sell them that late, just looked wrong, in thee way on some dodgy TV shows or insurance adverts there's like 59 plate mk4 Astra's and so on. Another a couple of days ago, a 53 plate Saxo, looked like it shouldve been no newer than an 02 plate, can anyone think of any others?

DVLA mistakes? I think someone posted up a 64-plated Volvo 440 on here a while ago.

Yet newer may well be possible

As mentioned in another thread, I once worked for a taxi firm that bought a pair of brand new M plate Montegos, which definitely looked odd.

A company I deliver to uses an 06 LDV Convoy dropsider. Surely there cant be any later than that? Until I got my new works Sprinter recently, it used to amuse me to see my 56 plate Sprinter parked next to the Convoy and think they hit the road in the same year.

I used to see a mk1 Mondeo on an R plate, did they sell them that new? Definitely looked odd.

Theres a lad on another site with a '04 reg 106 Gti. Looks so wrong considering they came out a P reg!!!

No the last were on a P reg. Mostly Veronas or Aspens they couldn't flog due to the hopeless spec. I've seen a fair few 51 plate Mk2s however, at this point the last of the line Zetec 1.8s were only going for £12,000.

I saw a red very tidy looking montego 2.0 estate on the m40 yesterday on an m plate. Had some fwncy writing on the rigyt side of the bootlid, champagne or something?

And it was in l3, fair play sir!

Definatly not a special edition, more like an LX or something. It looked to me like it would suit a K plate better.

Countryman? Clubman?

Might have been countryman, I was half asleep in l1 at the time, only noticed it because it looked different as it bowled on past!

Black top bumpers?

Yeah, but no gaffa tape. When I first saw it I thought it was ringer or set up for bilking.

Might have been an ex-MoD Montego. They had them in the early 90's.

Black in colour? And not by any chance bought from Williams Rover in Paisley (as in near Glasgow) there were a fair few around here at the time M reg was still recent also as taxis, and despite there being a fair few Arnold Clark Rover dealerships around here they all seemed to be from Williams which was just an independent main dealer, like they'd bought a batch cheap and knocked them out at a small profit to taxi drivers.

Also, Verona spec Mk1 Mondeos weren't mingebag spec were they? I thought they were better spec than LXs with air con, velour trim, colour coded bumpers and door mirrors, electric front windows and mirrors, front fogs etc I know the Aspen was base keep fit windows and no sunroof trim.

Yep, that's right, they were from Williams. White though, and a rival company had a few Henley blue L platers. By then mk1 Mondeos and mk3 Cavs were the cabs of choice in our town so the Montegos looked a bit last decade. Went well though with the turbo'd Perkins lump.

Late Escort vans look odd, they went up to 02ish when the Transit Connect came in.

Imported Nivas:

I saw an 11-plate Niva in Southend last week :)

^^Belongs to a local double glazing firm. The owner did attempt to start a franchise when they started to be made and imported again. I don't think he sold any, but still has the demonstrator.

I think what we are driving at are old fashioned designs which are still in producution and hence look "silly" with a modern reg.

You can still buy Nivas brand new in the UK...

Royal Enfield motorbikes...

And the king of them all, Jawa motorbikes...

http://www.jawamotorcycles.co.uk/retro.html     Yes, you can still buy a piston ported two stroke twin brand new (contrary to the "they've been banned by Europe innit" nay sayers).

Surely this thread is the same as the late registered one ?

No because the cars I'm talking about arent late registrations, they were still being built at the time of the latest plates they come with but just look wrong.

For example 11 plate Astra H sport hatches look wrong despite still being on sale at this point because the Astra J has been out since 59 plate, same with 05 plate Astra mk4 hatches and 06 plate Astra mk4 Cabrios because the Astra H has been out since 04 plate.

I've just walked past an M reg Scimitar SS1, that just doesn't seem right.

I saw an X plate E36 Compact today.

Google-fu shows it to be not "wrong", but it looked "wrong". Made to 2000.

No wonder, I don't think anyone would look at a LHD car from Russia with a less than stellar image that's £13k and think it would be a good buy. That's before you even consider that a brand new Suzuki Jimny is six-hundred quid cheaper to buy and cheaper to tax. In fact I think the Jimny is probably better in just about every objective way.

Somebody on another forum posted a pic of a 15 plate five door Niva the other day.

Because it's a Scimitar Sabre?

These look entirely wrong.

That's exactly what came to mind when I saw this thread. When I was at college a few years ago a lass had one on an 05 plate, she must have thought I was mental when I was starting at it with a perplexed look on my face as I walked past.
