When did you last see a panel van one of these? I can't even remember. Heres an unlucky late-model one being broken for spares. I'd like to buy it (its only in Stoke on Trent) but WTF would i do with it?

Hammer a camper van over it.

Because I'm a sad bastard and have spent far too long tinkering with Talbot Express diesels. I have no idea about the Fiat engines mind:

1) The XUD doesn't last in these because they are underpowered and mounted at an angle which promotes oil starvation.

2) The 2.5 diesel in at least the Citroen C25 and Talbot Express (don't know about the Fiat) isn't the SOFIM engine, it's out of a Citroen CX but with a differently set up injector pump. Everything else is pure CX diesel.

Picked this up tonight as it happens:

Its the flippin dogs bo11ox!!! I love it! Rolls along at 65mph no probs, it will maintain 70 but feels like its working hard whereas 60-65 is a relaxed comfortable sort of speed. Ergonomics are flippin dreadful, you have to twist your ankles at some right odd angles to operate the pedals but it handles well enough and the engine is a peach.

Just need to do something about this:

Lets the side down a bit. Do you reckon 2 people and a dog could live in this for 2 months? PRACE BETS NOW

I found that with my Mk1 Ducato - the pedal positioning was dreadful.  That was a 1.9 non-turbo and it would roll along at 65-70 - it was a SWB low top panel van though so had a lot less weight to lug about.  They do hold the road surprisingly well for such an old design.

Clear Coat it and leave it, This way people will 'keep away' in car parks and less chance of anyone taking a liking to it..

I'm sure 2 people and a dog could live in that.

2 small, very tolerant, easy going and possibly deaf people with no personal hygiene issues. Tie the dog to the towing eye.

Have a night in a hotel as a treat when it all gets a bit much.

Know what you mean Tonto. Obviously I have no personal hygiene issues but I havent lived in a small metal cube with Mrs Crab before so I can't say for certain that she has none.

Theres a big awning thing that goes on the side for when we inevitably end up in 'separate bedrooms'

My wife and I did two and a half months round Europe with a Honda S2000 and a tent.

Although metal cube trumps Vango 4 person adventure tent, for us a hotel stay at least once a week kept divorce at bay.

Two of us plus two kids and two dogs, did a year in something slightly bigger and it was THE best thing we ever did. 10 years later and we just started doing it again cos we still have the van, but minus kids who: 1 have both grown up and left home and 2 both said they would NOT be doing it again (though eldest is making noises about doing it on his own once he's piled up enough student debt to warrant running away from...)

GLW the escape plan

I'm glad to hear that this plan involves Mrs Crab, rather than you having Bolloxed the job up and were plotting your escape from her.

3100 miles around northern Europe in a short-wheelbase H van proved that me and Mrs DW would probably do ok. It was certainly one way to mark our first wedding anniversary. She was even impressed with how cool I was when the windscreen exploded on an Autobahn.

I must concede that the 'romance' of the whole camper van experience did leave us spending a few nights in a Norwegian hotel.

It's taken me about 5 years of fucking about with VW campers to actually how I just want something I can stand up in and just actually use without worrying about scratching it or leaving it parked anywhere and it getting nicked.

Don't suppose you want to PX it for something much faster but much less practical?

This is all happening - finish work 1 week tomorrow and I am FUGGIN RIGHT OFF in my camper van!!!! Just been buying a bike rack for the back and some chargers etc for computers & phones. I'm hammering the 'Michel Thomas Spanish' CD's as well. Expect regular spottage bulletins and news of bits dropping off the van as we roll along. I can't flippin wait!!!

INcidentally I bought a chopped-out rear corner panel for £50 to repair that massive dent but have not had time to get stuck in to it, meaning that the massive dent is coming with me on tour. Ho hum!

Take it with you and replace on a camping and caravaning club site

Congrats. You have the bollox to do it. Without being too nosey, what the hell would you do with your house whilst you're away? I've considered doing something similar with Mrs W a few times, but not sure I'd want to let any old bastard live in my abode.

I don't have a house (apart from the bo11ox museum), I am a lodger! So no problem there. Mrs Crab rents half a house, she is having to pay 2 months oxford rent (£1,000,000 approx) on a house she's not using which stings a bit but at ;least she has a housemate who will presumably let her know if the house gets blown up or whatever while she's away.

Hats off to you, looks like some proper 'living the dream' sort of stuff going on there, and doing what I expect a large amount of us would love to do. Good luck, look forward to updates/blogs/pictures of hopeless old motors spotted along the way.
