Buying off Gypsies.

I'd trust a bloke in a caravan more than one in a shiny suit and freshly gravelled car lot. Yeah, if you get screwed there's no comeback - but that's every private sale, ever. Check it over, hpi same as you would anything.

I think it's best not to generalise. There are good and bad types whether they are a gypsy, rich, poor, white, black etc. I got chatting to a gypsy family a few months ago and they were really nice, genuine people. We were talking about how some gypsy's give others a bad name. The old chap was telling me how he has always paid for the place he is stopping at and has worked hard all his life and I believe him. They also take good care of their families even as they get older. They have strong family values which is more than you can say for a lot of other people. The site was really well looked after too and the cars were all in decent nick, not much chod!

In the mid-80s a Traveller family descended on my dad one day, and he being the son of a Dublin farmer, they understood each other immediately and got on like a house on fire (or perhaps caravan).  Consequently they bought a load of scrap, as we had a gardenful, and over time we bought several cars from them including my first Lada, first Fiat 500 and two Bedford HA vans.  They also had further cars from us, including some that we'd bought from them.  Yes, you can haggle, they like that, expect it even, but once done, a deal is a deal and whatever you've bought is yours, for better or worse.  Their hospitality might be a bit rough-and-ready but it's also generous.  If you're welcomed, you are one of the family.

My advice: build up the relationship first, then if you do buy, spend as little as possible.  And always cash.

I don't mind that but it scares me that it's nicked or I turn up with a pocket full of cash and I wake up penny less with a broken jaw and brain damage......and my trousers on back to front.

I never knew you lived near to me.

Buying from travellers = painless.

Seeking a refund/compensation = painful.

If feedback like this doesn't put you off then nothing will

Mis-described, engine worn out, seller threatened physical violence, avoid!!

Go and buy it.

I once sold a car to a Rasta from Toxteth, and I once bought a motorbike off a bloke with a tattoo, who lived in a shed in the woods.

but never dealt with any travelling folk.

If it's the one I posted in the ebay tat thread last week read his 72% feedback

If it's cheap enough and you're not going to cry like a girl if it's a wrong un, buy it. There will be a story behind it or it wouldn't have ended up with the pikeys.

I've both bought off and sold to pikeys in the past and always found them straightforward to deal with, just go into it with your eyes open, as others have said there's a lot of other scum out there that I'd avoid dealing with, but to treat all caravan dwellers as thieves is possibly a little harsh.

Shirley the price of defenders is gonna rocket now they are stopping making them? - How could you possibly lose?*

*I can't guarantee you won't lose btw....

Personally, I have never had a good experience with pikies and many, many bad ones - but I have never tried buying anything from them either, it was all through a job that involved dealing with them usually when they were looking for someone to complain to.

If I were to be buying from them, I wouldnt be going alone, I would be taking the correct amount of cash and nothing more and I would be inspecting it carefully. However given the feedback on the previous sales, I wouldnt be bothering with that one.

So, just to sum up... you're considering buying some fucked up old Land Rover from a bunch of pikeys. What could possibly go wrong?

I can't think of a better recipe for success, do let us know how it goes.

The deal was you bought it like you saw it. Hey, look, I've helped you as much as I'm going to help you. See that car? Just use it for you're not welcome anymore. You should fuck off now while you still got the legs to carry you.

I have nowt constructive to add so have a relevant quote

I would trust gypsies over Italians

A traveller in a white Transit once changed a baby's nappy on top of my Nissan Sunny. Outside my front door. Then drove off leaving the shit filled nappy on top of my car.

Lovely people. Can't think where the negative stereotypes come from.

Posted

The travellers who live on the site near me all have cars that cost about 4 times my salary nd have brand new Transit vans!

This all seems a bit daily mail and racist. They are lovely people who love their families etc and love to do deals. Real solid grafters. Take a load of tesco bags with you in your pocket to break the ice. In case one of them needs a shite.

Posted

I'm sure they're lovely people, salt of the earth etc etc.

Just make sure the motor you're buying isn't the one they use as a mobile toilet.

I sold my polo to a pikey girl a few years ago. She had the most magnificent set of bosoms i've ever seen on a 20 year old girl. They really were lovely to look at.

Really short cut off denim shorts, too. They were that short you could almost see what she had eaten from breakfast.

So, in summary, go for it. It's worth it purely for the bosoms.

Can us lazy bastards (me) have an ebay link to the time/s it was advertised, please?

Bought my second Austin Cambridge from a traveller site. The two guys I dealt with were affable enough, they delivered the car to me on the back of a lowloader and seemed genuinely pleased it wasn't going to be banger raced. It wasn't stolen, they'd just bought it cheap somewhere.

On the other hand, it was nowhere near roadworthy as implied in the ad, and it also had a hooky MoT (nine months)

In spite of my nice gypsy post i wouldn't buy with feedback like that.

Look on the bright side, it could be a banker or politician selling it ? Then that would be something to worry about ?

Yeah I think I will leave it. It may go ok,or I may get royaly screwed over. I'd rather let it go. I think what I will do in my quest for a cheap 90/110 is trawl the local farms and see if any farmers have any tucked away. At least that how I think these gypsies got this one.
