That looks great underneath. Are you planning to sort rust around the screen out??

My grandad had one of them, same year, same colour.  Nice one. Gear lever has a massive throw on it from memory.

Cool. What is it, 1.6 CIH?

You clearly know what you are doing but if it's anything like a Manta they go behind the headlights and on the swan neck of the chassis rails (basically the footwell, at the wishbone mount).

That should tidy up really well with a bit of work.  With your welding skills that shouldn't hold any particular surprises I'd think.

My 1st ever car was a 2 door one of these in silver. It had a slipping clutch and I bent the wing on a telegraph pole while reversing.

Looks like a good base for a restoration, a bit of welding over the winter and some paint in the summer.

Great purchase, looking forward to seeing this one saved!

Lovely thing, very well done.

I drove (and nearly bought) this 1978 1600L last year:

Long gear throw, as egg says, but really nice steering and reasonably lively if you rev it.

Did you buy it brand new whilst having a bigamus marriage with both Akron and Oxfordguy28s mums?

Ah, I like the MK1 Chav, one of the few RWD classics without a stupid price tag. Well bought!

Great stuff.

Absolutely love it. Come from round this way somewhere originally, too.

Nice work! Was it the pump? Sounds sweet.

Love the "key".

I changed the fuel pump, points, condenser, spark plugs and fan belt, it was mainly the pump and points stopping it from running before by the looks of it but the other bits did need changed.

I need a rocker cover gasket and radiator hoses next.

The key was broken so I welded a screwdriver to it.

It has some giffer written notes with the paperwork, first owner was in Warrington, second Liverpool and third Corwen.

Yes Crewe and Nantwich REG that, probably came from the Vauxhall dealers as was in hightown. Original plates? Or sticker?

We had a 79 Chevanne used by a small business 1984 - 89 (several drivers) which had the steering lock button below the steering column you had to press whilst turning the key every time you put the key in. Not everyone remembered the button was there (>  broken key). I don't remember if 70s Mk1 Cavs had the button. I think Vivas did. The purpose of the button was a mystery to me.
