Dave's shonkers - collection begins

The GTS got stolen off my drive last night.

Based on the scratches left on my van and the wife's car they just manhandled it into a van with the steering lock still on.

Police will not do anything other than put it on ANPR as there is no CCTV etc.

Quite annoying as I am 5 years and 2 months since my last theft (Subaru from outside Bradford uni) so I managed 1 renewal with no claims and now I'm claiming again.

Fully comp with lowish excess so hopefully I'll get enough to get something else interesting.

Anyway, the main message is to put a tracker and some big locks on your shit as the police will not help you if it disappears.

In the case of the Met, they're probably institutionally useless.

What is it you wanted the police to do? Iā€™m assuming they took the report of your stolen bike?

Well it might be nice if they would even pretend they would investigate at all.
I know a rough time that it went and I am fairly sure it was lifted into a van so they could look for traffic cameras or CCTV?
I am about 500 yards away from the centre of a small town so there is a medium chance they could find something?
Instead what they do is just add your vehicle to the list of stolen ones and unless you can hand them the evidence yourself nothing will happen.

I fully understand the chances of it actually being found are slim I was just annoyed that they just told me on the same phone call that it would be filed and nothing else done about it unless I bought them some evidence.

My main point is for anyone else to make sure you have your own locks/tracker/CCTV etc as I didn't.

Thatā€™s shit. As Burnside says flood social media with details and photos if possible. Something might come of it. Good luck.Ā

Did they specifically say they wonā€™t carry out any investigation?Ā

Very random.Ā

Sorry to hear this, seems like the GTS is one of the most stolen of scooters.

If where you live isĀ anything like London, it was probablyĀ stolen on behalf of, or for,Ā a drug dealing scrote with a 125 GTS.

They just put their 125 number plate on, remove any 300 badges, and voila,Ā anĀ instant power increase and tye ability to do more drug deliveries per day. Very difficult to spot a 125 running as a 300, as they are outwardly identical. You need to checkĀ the frame number to be certain.

A simpler wayĀ to tell is ifĀ theĀ rider is wearing a grey track suit andĀ flip face helmet, with a manbag over their shoulder.

Cheers all.

Yes Fraz, on the phone the bloke told me "it will be filed, unless you find any CCTV or anything and get back in touch" which I understood to mean they will not do anything other than put it on PNC and ANPR as stolen.

I fully understand that they are constrained on resource and there isn't much more they could do, it's more the attitude of the chap in telling me so bluntly.

As Jerzy points out ANPR is not quite infallible as your scrote can ditch the plate and put a different one on. I didn't think ped crime was as much of a thing round here but we are in easy reach of Manchester and Leeds where maybe it is.

I have posted on both local area and Vespa/Scooter FB groups as it is fairly distinctive with my recent paint job so you never know.

For now I am just leaving it with the insurance, obvs I already have a tentative bagsies on a replacement but am gonna give it a week or two for the insurance to at least get my claim moving and give the bike some chance to resurface.

This seems like the perfect advert for one of those camera door bells that record movement outside your door.

Sorry to hear this, Dave.

If this happened to me I'd be livid and have elaborate revenge fantasies about putting another one out for them to steal, only this one has a tank full of high explosive and a detonator wired to go off when the bike is more than oneĀ mile from theĀ house. Sorry for your loss.

  • Dave_Q changed the title to Dave's shonkers - Vespa GTS found!

Found about 200 yards away from my house in a place I didn't think to look.Ā

Made a real mess of the frame, FFS the whole glovebox panel comes off in 30sec with a phillips screwdriver.

If the frame wasn't such a mess I would have a go at fixing it but as it is it's off to the insurance.

So not just thieving cunts, but incompetent thieving cunts. What did they try and start it with, a fucking tin opener?!

Such a waste. A waste of what was a perfectly decent vehicle, and a waste of oxygen used keeping these people alive. Sorry it ended this way! :(Ā

Did the theiving scumbags actually get it started? You would have thought they would have checked on the internetĀ to see how to strip it. Hopefully you'll get a good payout, and soon.

Is it too much to ask that one of them severed an artery on their neat cutting work?Ā

No they didn't get it started. The bike ecu has a immobilizer built in so it won't start without either the keys, a new lock/ecu set or some specialist kit.

It is kinda heartening to think they spent ages on it to end up failing.

And on the subject of failing, they took it from our street where nobody has CCTV to a car park round the corner at a disused nursing home. It's seen other scratter activity since it's been closed so the house next to it has a banging CCTV setup, the officer that found it said he has used their CCTV before to ID a suspect.

The bike has already been collected by the insurance as I told them I couldn't really secure it with the steering lock busted. Coming to a copart auction near you soon.

My brother worked for Piaggio, and said that the immobiliserĀ  on the GTS was very difficult to crack. It's why most thatĀ are stolen are hijacked (in London) or following a house burglary when they findĀ theĀ keys.

Seems like your thieves were morons, and lets hope the CCTV allow the police to identify them.

Not really surprising, given the average cannabis intake...
