After driving the Tata a short distance today I've decided its probably to uncomfortable to drive all that way so now I'm thinking about going in the 309...

Big girl's blouse.  Use a cushion...

I collected my Audi Convertible from the local garage tonight after its “only starting when it felt like it episodeâ€Â. It turns out to have been the camshaft sensor.

Now it’s fit again if we are getting sunshine this year for Shitefest this is a strong contender, now who's in charge of weather in Wales........

Lovin' the Aud sticker - may come in the Porch.

I took lots of stickers off on a sunny day but that one was in the shade and was taking paint with it!

I was planning on briging the Simca to this but I don't think I could cope with the stress of thinking it's gonna break down all the time for hours. Plus it'd take 50% longer as it's SLOW. And it can't cope with hills. And it hasn't got a fag lighter socker for my phone/sat nav and I can't read a map while driving so I would definitely get very lost. And it uses twice as much fuel as the 405.

So I'll probably bring the 405. Dull. Even more so as I don't have the radio code.

Im picking up a granada on the way and its first trip under my ownership will be the trek to Llangollen.

I would love to bring the ADO16 but I spent the time I put aside to fix it fixing HGF on the Disco.  The Disco has now HGF'ed again so that leaves the Cherry as my only vehicle capable of more than 15 miles without overheating.

I'm keeping my fingers crossed that the Disco doesn't get any worse as Ms C needs a car on SF weekend and she can't drive the moderns from work but I can.

I'm looking forward to it. Be good to put faces to names. Will be in the punto. Any more information on a convoy yet from Midlands?

I've jotted down possible directions for a scenic drive on the Saturday...obviously if you just set your sat nav you'll get to Devil's Bridge quicker but this way gets you off the main roads...

  1. Take A5 West to Corwen.
  2. Turn left after leaving Corwen onto B4401 through Llandrillo.
  3. Turn left just after Brynterion Inn up B4402 to a T junction with B4391
  4. Option: Turn right onto B4391 taking narrow singletrack road left, through Rhos y gwaliau to upper end of Lake Vyrnwy.
  5. Turn left onto B4391 through Llangynog to Penybontfawr.
  6. Turn right onto B4396 to Lake Vyrnwy
  7. Optional: circuit of the lake
  8. From the North of the dam head East on B4393. Turn right onto B4395 to the T junction with A458.
  9. Turn right onto A458 and follow to the roundabout with A470.
  10. Option: before the roundabout, turn left down onto narrow singletrack road (on LH bend, opposite white house with post-box outside) and follow to Llanbrynmair.
  11. Turn left onto A470, and left at the next roundabout to stay on the same road to Llanbrynmair.
  12. Turn right onto B4518 to Llyn Clywedog and Llanidloes.
  13. Turn right at T junction in Llanidloes, then left at roundabout to join A470.
  14. Turn right onto A470 to Llangurig.
  15. At Llangurig turn right at the roundabout onto A44 towards Aberystwyth.
  16. At Ponterwyd turn left onto A4120 to Devil’s Bridge.
  17. At Devil’s Bridge turn left just before the Hafod hotel onto B4574, then shortly turn right into SF ’15!

There's a couple of options; obviously the whole thing is optional but the suggested ones are arguably more fun, although will take more time so best to make the decision on the day. Realistically we're not going to stick together as a convoy so if we all have a vague idea of the route the chances are we'll spend at least some of it as a group! Sticking to the quiet roads where we shouldn't have to wait ages at junctions, will help too.

I've jotted down possible directions for a fucking howling drive on the Saturday...

  • Take A5 West to Corwen.
  • Turn left after leaving Corwen onto B4401 through Llandrillo.
  • Turn left just after Brynterion Inn up B4402 to a T junction with B4391
  • Option: Turn right onto B4391, should be able to drift the RWD stuff along the narrow singletrack road left, through Rhos y gwaliau to upper end of Lake Vyrnwy.
  • Turn left onto B4391 through Llangynog to Penybontfawr.
  • Turn right onto B4396 to Lake Vyrnwy
  • Optional: three fast circuits of the lake
  • From the dam head West on B4393. Turn right onto B4395 to the T junction with A483.
  • Turn right onto A483 and follow to the roundabout with A470.
  • Option: before the roundabout, turn left down onto narrow singletrack road (should be able to hit about ninety along here remembering to slow for LH bend, opposite white house and dented post-box outside) and follow to Llanbrynmair.
  • Turn left onto A470, and left at the next roundabout to stay on the same road to Llanbrynmair.
  • Turn right onto B4518 to Llyn Clywedog and Llanidloes.

  • At Devil’s Bridge turn left just before the Hafod hotel onto B4574, then shortly turn right into SF ’15!

There's a couple of options; obviously the whole thing is optional but some of the suggested alternate routes will be a fucking riot and will be much quicker so best to make the decision on the day.

You are all very irresponsible.

I'll probably not join in.

It's advisable not to follow me as I have a tendency to get lost, so my scenic drive will no doubt end up being totally different to the above, despite my best intentions..!

SWMBO needs a car for the SF weekend, so that's the Cav vouched for. So I'll be in the modern shite Rover 75, sorry.

PMRs are the way to go for convoy driving. They are ideal for catching up if you lose sight of the convoy, letting everybody know if you need to stop or just pointing out something interesting that you have seen.

The single track lanes are great fun on a Honda c90. I prefer them roads so I'll take those if anyone else up for it?

Single track roads sound slower, which means my exhaust will blow less...

They also come in handy for blocking the M74/M6 switch with Volvos across all lanes and making jokes about Pant.

Minicab Simulator is serviced and should be in fine fettle for the trip south. Apart from a weird front end noise I can't trace but we'll ignore that.

Still need to find out how easy it will be to sleep in.

Swap the seat from the 309 into the Tata!

Pm me all the numbers on the radio and I *MIGHT* be able to find a code for you.....

That was bloody brilliant. You and cms206 in the 1st and 3rd lanes in 940s flanking my 960 in the middle. Shame Richard couldn't get a snap.

Unfortunately I don't see that one being recreated this year. Me in a 760, Andy in a 740 and you in a S40ish.

Mat - from Llangurig, you'll see a signpost for Devil's Bridge as a fork to the left before you get to Ponterwyd. Folk might as well take that. It's more direct and quite pretty. Unless you want supplies from the garage and shop in Ponterwyd, which is a few hundred yards past the turning for the A4120.

I must concede that following that route on my own would be quite hard work, and I know quite a lot of those roads. Perhaps we should instead have a challenge to see who can get from Llangollen to Devil's Bridge covering the least miles. Without use of a breakdown truck. Actually, maybe that'd be an acceptable cheat given how long it takes for one to turn up...

Popped round to one of my brother in laws to borrow some camping stuff for SF...

Got a fishing chair

which after a session with a 1987 Hoover Portapower that I bought from the car boot earlier looked much better

upload_-1.jpg

Also borrowed a kitchen in a bag...

upload_-1.jpg

None of this has been used in the last 7 years as he hasnt been fishing in that long, so vacced it all off and washed up all the wash-upable stuff

upload_-1.jpg

A petrol powered stove that he showed me how to use. Will go get some fresh petrol and try it again this weekend so I know how to use it

got gifted a sleeping bag too which doesnt fit BIL, and has a hole in the top, which was nice

Getting there now!

Some jiggery-pokery with the front seat has established that it WILL be possible (though probably not especially comfortable!) to kip in the Mercedes.  Therefore, I shall not be bringing a tent.

But I'm still staying at the Hafod for the second night...  :)

Do any shiters have CB radio? I have one I could fit in the car if others have them. Strikes me as the perfect shitely way to keep in touch through the ether.

Posted

I have a CB in the garge, it's unused and untested, I took it out of the Spyder which was used for a banger rally.

I wasn't sure of the practicality of CB's in the Welsh valleys though

Scotoshite tend to favour walkie talkies. Do they work on similar frequencies?
