Closest I've got to a 917

I've got close to such machines back when I managed to go to a Porsche special event at the Dick Lovett dealer in Swindon back in 2010. Unfortunately camera phones weren't very good back then.

There was also a interview with Walter Röhrl who turned up too, but unfortunately at that point I wasn't aware quite the history of him and Porsche.

My closest proximity to a 917 came at the Le Mans museum where they have the Le Mans martini racing Vic elford/ gerrard Larousse 71 Lang heck On display. I’ve got a 1:18 example of the same in my book case as well. #saddo

ive been to le mans twice but never in the museum

my 917 was at barber in alabama - they only let people down there if there was an event on 😛

Winter is coming. I put away the 2CV and Metro today and SORNed them.

Winter is coming. Today I taxed my Alfa 156 V6 Saloon, 190 bhp though the front wheels in slimy leaves and ice should make it exciting!

Slowly, I have to rent indoor space.

VP Progress, not much sadly but some.

With the interior stripped out it was time to look at the rot.  As normal theres more than first appeared but in all honesty its a fairly solid dollop.

After looking at the rear i decided to start with the easy bits up front.

A poke about and we have

Ns

I done the N.S first which was awkward as all 3 parts of the cill had to be repaired from inside as the wing is welded on, on the OS the wing is a hardly attached fibreglass one. Ive not removed it but with a few bolts out it can be pulled away enough to get some better access.

Not to bad looking from the outside.

Time to cut out the grot.

20201006_174103.thumb.jpg.baf47c2281ac84e1ba2a80a5a319003f.jpg

It got a tad bigger after this. The drivers footwell is heavily pitted in some areas and whilst its got plenty of life in it, it was easier to trim a bit more and weld to better steel further in.

Right then.

Inner support panel knocked up and welded in. Whist i know the 6s would have been happy with a MOT style patch over the grot ive trimed out as much as can and  Ive done lap joints just to speed things up a bit as Function over form is the plan. Everything cleaned back and weld thru zinc primed if its being enclosed.

After that, the little angle piece is folded up and the plug welded along the bottom seam with the odd tack up top whilst i jigged it about. The floor hole now bigger.

Floor panel folded up and welded in also the wheel arch bit knocked up and buzzed on.

With various hammers, a chuck of railway sleeper and a welding glove a new outter sill end was formed and fettled in place. Cleaning some paint back revealed a couple of pinholes in the sill so i cut out the bad area and welded on a wee patch. Theres a cover over the sills so didnt make sense to let in and smooth it off.  Splash sheild mount made abd welded on aswell. It was then Cleaned back and coated with some bonda rust primer.

Passenger side received the same treatment. Id done this side first but didnt take any pics.

Both footwells have been wire wheeled.  Rust converted and bonda primed.  The original seem sealer will coming away so i cleaned it out and will re do it.

I have plans, I just need the time to do them now! No harsh pressure washing or drill brushing required, some good old fashioned @vulgalour style love is all that's needed!

Need to hunt the hose and solution tube out for my vax really...

One of the planned welding days was scuppered by my sneezing thing and when feeling a bit poop welding is the last thing i want to do. So i do some simple jobs.

With the seats out i decided to give them a clean to see if theres room for improvement.

That would be a yes then.

Some mild APC and a detailing brush and we get a much brighter in person seat.

That looks like the scene from some grim oop North type film set in the late 90s...

Andyrew has informed me that the outlet pipe on the VP1500 fuel sender unit is rotten.

I have looked around for a replacement without success. Somebody on the Allegro owners club Facebook page  says they are hard to find and there is a suggestion an MGB one can be converted.

Before I attempt the MGB conversion thing does anybody have a secret stash or know of any for sale?

I have put a link in your wanted, funnily enough the chap who bought my VP has asked the same question on the Vanden Plas Facebook group and the link is for someone who says he has them, including the seal and ring.

Seems very expensive, but I filled in my details to see how much the shipping is and  "Selected country not supported"  was the answer so I guess I would have to email to find out if they even send to the UK.

I had a look around and im surprised the sender isnt shared with anything else like the maxi etc.
