Time for a long-overdue look at another unsung hero. Why the Austin Maxi is not as crap as its reputation would suggest: http://rustyoldrubbish.blogspot.co.uk/2016/07/unsung-heroes-austin-maxi.html

And if you missed anything in the great forum upgrade-downgrade, here's the links to some other recent features:

Nice blog that, and you are correct in your assumption about it being appreciated more here than elsewhere.   Judging, that is, by the plethora of incorrectly plated cars at a show I recently attended.   All stuff tends to pick up unsuitably modern replacement plates as a matter of course but why do people get black plates made up for N reg. BL cars (for example) and THEN get that gibberish modern font on them?   WTAF?

Rant over, yep, you are preaching to the converted, QS.

Ironically I have just come inside to remove rust from my eye and have a cup of tea whilst in the middle of changing the exhaust system on mine.

I have had a new exhaust in the barn before I had the car, it eventually came in use! NEVER THROW ANYTHING AWAY EVER

I have had two previous Acclaims years ago and banger raced them both. They made good non contact bangers as they were one of the quickest cars with that engine capacity at the time.

Had this one 5 years and although it doesn`t get used much these days it always starts first time and drives really well.

I ought to start a thread on it I suppose.....

That Acclaim exhaust is like the holy grail to Acclaim owners, you just can't get them anymore hence many owners changing over to stainless now.

Acclaims are for total winners. Hence I had one as my first car. Upgraded the stereo to a Wharfedale branded Dixons own-brand CD player, a pair of Wharfedale Valdus front speakers (when the genuine Wharfedale briefly marketed such things) and a pair of Argos Goodmans rear shelf speakers to finish the job off.

I know we all love our first cars, but the Acclaim truly was grossly underrated.

Always wanted to try these although when they were just banger money I never found one, didn't realise so few had ben sold here. The engine is a water cooled derivative of the ( transverse rear engined NSU) engine, and sits on top of the gearbox like a Triumph 1300, hence the high bonnetline. Inboard front brakes like the Ro80.

There is an immaculate looking one for sale here http://m.autoscout24.de/angebote/volkswagen-sonstige-k70-benzin-silber-299308925

But sadly it is silver. All of the K70s I remember were orange, gold, turquoise or green, proper loud 1970s colours!

edit - found a picture of the engine / 'box. Final drive is under the engine but gears sort of in line, but still ofset through a pair of drop gears, so not completely like a Triumph 1300. sorry.

Great blog, really interesting. Never heard of the K70 before.

There used to be a K70 in Easton's scrappy in Gartocharn in the early 90s - it just sat there, fairly complete, with saddos like me looking wistfully at the engine bay wondering where we could find another sidedraft Weber clone from, because twin 40s, y'know.

Are you all aware that the K70 shares its doors with the R80?

Yeah, along with the piston rings and clutch pedal.

Allegedly, the Porsche 924's brakes came from the K70.

Solid blog. GR9, good read, etc.

I vaguely recall one for sale a few years back which was an updated car rebadged as a De Breune. Only slightly altered (not for the better).

edited to add it was on car and classic

Door sharing not involving Landcrab? How can this be?

Yep, the DeBruyne GT. A beautiful car ruined by an American. The story's there on the blog.
