Things did not go to plan, I went all the way to Folkstone today by train (144 miles) to Collect a 2001 Volvo V70 XC I won on ebay and the Volvo would not start. Call me a fool if you want but I have still agreed to buy the car when it is fixed at the sellers expense because I think he is very genuine. The seller has paid for my return fare and the 2nd trip to Folkstone I plan to make next week when it is ready.

It not a bad old car for 173k, some light scratching a chipped headlight and when I asked when the oil was last changed he replied May this year when the cam belt was done along with a full service including inspection of the 4x4 system, I know if only it would start!

If the dude is fixing it and paying your expenses, I dont see how you can possibly go wrong!

If only other sellers were as decent.......

This is why I usually buy a return train ticket when on collection missions, for an extra couple of quid you can get home if said vehicle isn't a goer.

What is it with this place and boxy Volvos?  I'm a car fan but I've never given them a moment's thought until I started reading this forum and now I feel I'm missing out on some sort of secret world.  Like the butcher's "special stuff" in The League of Gentlemen.  Can someone lend me one for a weekend so I can see what all the fuss is about?

They say "you're not a real petrolhead unless you've owned an Alfa"... Well, I think one is not a real Autoshitter unless they've owned a boxy Volvo !

Single Ã‚£54.20. Return Ã‚£72.30, I was gambling it was going to be OK.

Why the non start issue?

Turning but not firing, simple fault reader did not read any faults. The sellers Mech will be back tomorrow with a different reader and a selection of replacement parts.

Great comfort, great sound system, loads of space and they usually* go when required.

They are one of the most stress free ways to get around this country by road.

That's why I sold mine and bought a Citroen.

All the cars I regret selling were volvos.

I sold a petrol v70 auto se to a mate and the damn thing refused to break.

Sold an S60 and saw it years later when it over took me on the motorway.

And I still miss my 740. White, grey interior, like new, but 100k miles so it was bound to be about to blow up eh??  Doh .....

Great sound systems in them all. The 800 series sound system has a hidden button to reset the cd player when it freezes, which I only found out about after buying a new one.

I have never had one fail to start apart from flat battery.

In 1995, I bought a X-reg 240GLT three days before heading to southwest France for a wedding...

If it's the ETM that's gone wrong, stay well away, the car is scrap. It's not just a matter of replacing the throttle body, the new one has to be programmed in. Look it up on youtube.

Sorry to hear of collection woes-hope all goes smoothly in the end!

Interesting...where is this secret button?

I can't really speak about post-Ford takeover volvos, but the appeal for me is that they built them properly up to a standard rather than down to a price, hence a 20 year old volvo can be just as good as a 10 year old other make with half the mileage, but for a lot less money.

Comfy, spacious, reliable, powerful enough (usually) and "safe" handling.

Now with added success.

I have the Volvo V70 XC home after a clean up of the fuel system because it was ran out of petrol.

First impression are very good but it does bomp over rough roads so a bush or two need doing and maybe a wheel bearing. Also there is a top end oil leak to sort.

Sorry I forgot my camera the second time so no collection shots.

I was looking at XC volvos before getting the V70, but cost of the 4x4 system scared me a little.

Mine could do with a new intercooler, and a bush or two, but you should love it.

Megga comfy, and make any journey a doddle.

What engine does yours have ?
