Bren Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Just wondering if anybody has had any mither yet trying to sell a car under the new rules? Have you had to spend an hour explaining to somebody why they have to buy their own tax? I am curious because so many people were unaware of the changes and I do not believe the majority of the public are intelligent enough to comprehend what the changes entail.
Lord Sterling Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 the majority of the public are either not intelligent or bothered enough to comprehend what the changes entail.Basically. Unfortunately so many people these days are so wrapped up in thier own lives that they don't really care what actually goes on around them, or, they listen and take on board what they hear on Faecebook/twatter/wot der maytes sed etc... EssDeeWon Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I think there are defiantly people out there who are buying cars and believe it comes with 3 months tax. There was such a case on here, cant remember who though. When selling a car I wouldn't spend an hour explaining the whole scenario, if they didn't get after 5 minutes I would walk back inside, close the curtains and stick the kettle on and wait for someone else to come along and buy it. r.welfare Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I've sold two cars in the last week, both to folk who understood they had to buy their own tax. In fact the Avensis buyer asked me if I understood the new rules, which was nice of him. When I bought my wife's new car a couple of weeks back the seller didn't know and was quite pleased at the prospect of a refund - the V5 arrived yesterday which was a 10 day turnaround time but I don't know whether the tax refund is as quick.
CortinaDave Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I reckon the confusion will go on for years, in much the same way as you still see H reg Sierras on eBay advertised with "24 years old so free classic tax as of next year" even though that was stopped in 1998. spike60 Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 About 12 days for my refund to appear. The car buyer was very keen on knowing when it was taxed till and hasn't retaxed it yet so guess he thinks he's still covered by mine, despite me explaining it stopped with me.
Bobthebeard Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Anything that involves change and the general public, will entail simmering piss. If not actually boiling. Car tax rules included. rml2345 and Uncle Jimmy 2
dave21478 Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 If faced with this, explain the situation to them once and then sell them the car anyway. What happens down the road is their problem, not yours. Once the end of the month is past, they will probably get the message soon enough when they ping up on an ANPR somewhere. You cant be responsible for the ignorance of the masses and its not your job to educate them. AlabamaShrimp 1
spike60 Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 I sent the V5 off 1st class next day but it took about 9 days to come up as untaxed on the DVLA site, back dated to the day I sold the car.

New POD Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 If faced with this, explain the situation to them once and then sell them the car anyway. You cant be responsible for the ignorance of the masses and its not your job to educate them. I always write a receipt, which says "Sold as Seen, with no warranty implied or given. Ownership of car is mine and is not subject to any hire purchase agreements, and Ownership is transferred to MR ....................at EXACT TIME on DATE." In future I will add : New Owner is made aware that the Tax does not transferre and the DVLA will refund me on receipt of V5. New owner to make own arrangements for the tax or declaring it Sorn. Then I'll photograph it with both our signatures and print the new owner a copy.
michael1703 Posted November 12, 2014 Posted November 12, 2014 Have any traders here managed to tax one to run about in until its sold having filled the v5 out as a motor trader? I've got a few v5 front covers to vehicles I've bought but haven't tried yet
rainagain Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 When I was trying to sell the Alfa one guy who came to see it was obsessed I was trying to rip him off with the tax, even when I googled it on my phone and let him look at the website explaining the new rules and pointed out it ended in gov.uk. My OH said it would have been easier to just have left the now irrelevant tax disc on the window and let him deal with the problems if he didn't believe me. EssDeeWon 1
barefoot Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Sorn'd the T2 on 31.10, refund arrived 6.11I was a happy bunny and bunged the cheque in my xmas ale jar.
Junkman Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 First car sold under the new, improved tax scam© caused no issues.Today I received the acknowledgement of transfer, and the tax refund cheque. One suggestion for improvement I have: Acknowledgement and cheque arrived in separate envelopes - DVLA could save taxpayers' money by consolidating them into one envelope.
sierraman Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 When I sold the fiesta I got the cheque for the road tax back promptly. The problem came when I came to buy a new car, the letter of the law implys that you have to tax it online the moment you pick the keys up.
trigger Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 This morning i saw a silver Peugeot 407 estate on the side of the road with DVLA Tax inspection (or something like that) wrote on the back and a orange beacon going, behind it was a camera setup on a tripod checking every car that went past, the trouble is now that we don't have tax on the window how difficult will it be to remember when our tax is due?.
NorfolkNWeigh Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 I bought a car on the 18th October,I didn't mention to vendor about tax bollocks. I kept checking on line showed as taxed till about 6th November, when it showed as expired 18/10. I then immediately taxed on line. As yet no nuns or kittens seem to have suffered nor has a DVLA hit squad kicked my door in...yet
Pillock Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 This morning i saw a silver Peugeot 407 estate on the side of the road with DVLA Tax inspection (or something like that) wrote on the back and a orange beacon going, behind it was a camera setup on a tripod checking every car that went past, the trouble is now that we don't have tax on the window how difficult will it be to remember when our tax is due?. DVLA Answer: With the new, improved* DD method, you don't have to remember as it will simply keep being renewed for you. See, loads better! Everyone Else's Answer: More difficult, so more fines, and the sauna rooms with the nubile swedish-girl masseurs at the DVLA offices will now have diamonds set into the solid gold door handles.
Craig the Princess Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 They need to update the rules so the tax if transfered to the new owner for the remander of the month. DD is a good idea but scrap the additional charge for it. Apart from that it seems to work ok, monthly DD'ed the Saab today at the post office.
CortinaDave Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Aye - with every other bill you get a discount for DD.. yet DVLA charge you extra. Sigh.
meggersdog Posted November 13, 2014 Posted November 13, 2014 Had a customer phone up the other day.She was trying to set up a D D to start from the 1st of December but the website said the car wasn't MOTed.She didn't initially say the DD was to start from December but her car was MOTed until 27th of this month."but it is MOTed,was done at your place last year".It wasn't until I found out when the direct debit was to start I then had to explain the website was correct.By the time the tax expires the car will be out of MOT.
