Having lustful Lincoln Town Car feelings.

WHY do I find myself wanting one of these? I would not buy one (I can't afford it, and it would make me broke, probably more so than a Jaaag when you need to import an indicator from the states for £12,754.98p.

But isn't it just fantastic? But WHY do I want one...I mean...WHY?

Waftmatic . It would be like sitting on your couch at home.  Comfort central and the chance of a fall asleep at the wheel moment.

Posted

It would also let me use new words and phrases like "mothafuka" "punk-ass bitch".

They are only complete with a wheelchair symbol on a private numberplate reading something like I DRW COX and parked diagonally across two disabled parking spaces at the golf club.

Maximum obnoxious giffer ware these are. Hence would.

The RHD version is called Jaguar S-Type, btw.

I like the earlier type - the one Patrick Swayze cremated in Point Break.

The S-Type ,and indeed the XF , are re bodied Lincoln LS and Thunderbirds.

A typical British Thunderbird

An LS in the Sopranos, interestingly driven by Phil ,seen here talking to Vito, who Phil later kills. These two characters are the only gay wise guys in the complete 7 seasons of The Sopranos and Phil the only one not to drive a proper Lincoln or Caddy. Coincidence or the writers making a comment about the credentials of the Lincoln Lite ?

It's basically a Ford crown victoria/mercury grand marquis in a slightly glitzier frock. This is a good thing, it means the mechanical bits will last the distance. Do watch out for problems with air suspension though.

It has the same 4.6 v8 as the crown vic, mustang and mg zt 260, not that powerful but reliable, long lived and not too thirsty. You should DEFINITELY get one.

I was looking semi seriously at one of these or a crown vic, but got sidetracked by an allegro. As you do.

Don't worry too much about spares. Prices are generally cheap enough and easily available from the states, even factoring in shipping. The only thing is, the time in getting them over here if your desperate and have to use the car. It's not excessively slow but worth thinking about, and express delivery is available ( though you pay for it!).

I haven't had any trouble getting parts for my Mercury (and that's a fair bit older!) in fact I'd say the old yank motors are better served, spares wise, than a lot of euro cars are. I do tend to keep a small stock of some parts, service items etc though.

Jags are nice, but nothing compares to yanks. they are great to cruise about in, and really stand out. I'd say go for it!

A lot of stuff is available over here, and there are loads of that era limos being dismantled now due to non-EU-compliance.

They are an excellent source of consumables, like lights, bumpers, wheels, etc.

Technically yes, but when it comes to private plated obnoxious gifferness, they are in the Town Car league.

Dead easy to work on. Eat front suspension bushes and ball joints for fun.

I don't think you'd need to go to the bother of importing one. There are quite a few here already and they come up for sale quite frequently. Just sayin....

I'd suggest you avoid the air suspension system. But if you do end up with a car which has it, remember that there is a switch in the trunk, on the, uh, near--, uh, left hand side.

If all four wheels leave the ground while this switch is ON, the airbags will deflate. When the car is lowered again they will be empty, and can be damaged as a result. I've had to replace the air suspension with springs at least once, as the customer would rather spend $200 to do that than $1200 to replace the airbags.

I'm a Cadillac man, so I can't answer why anyone would want a Lincoln...other than because RWD, and better interchangeability. The Crown Vic is being phased out here in the US, so time may be running out. Parts may be a bit more expensive in future.

Giffertastic cars no doubt. Would NOT but not only for that reason. They're gas hogs. OMGMPSKAOSYO.

The '79 that comes up on the website is a much better buy, only twice the price, but 100 times the bling factor and ooohmegawdwtfisthat and definitely NEEDS two parking spots everywhere. It probably uses much more petrol too.

I don't understand why you wouldn't want a Town Car. It's going to be 800 times more memorable than a Jag and you're unlikely to lose it in a car park.

There's too many stretch limo versions around to have any class I think.

My God. There used to be a white one of these around here, and that had a blue badge. YOU ARE THE ORACLE OF SHITE.

I was delighted to get a town car for a ride to the airport recently, usually it's some shit (not shite) Navigator or some such stiff riding dross.   Town car is genuinely comfortable, all Houston limo drivers are unanimous that they are still the best despite being an older design than the Ark.

Even though they have stopped making them, I think parts will still be easily available for years as they made millions and they share parts with half of the Ford US range.   Rockauto will see you right for cheap bits, Jags are fine cars but a Town Car has style*.

I rolled around Charlotte (fnarr fnarr) in a rented one for a week back in 2006.  It looked just like this one:

15424761_large.jpg

The ride was comfortable although there was an odd floaty pitching sensation, like a yacht at anchor just offshore.  The steering was connected to the front wheels by a system that surely included telex and semaphore.  The back tyres squealed if you took a gentle curve at anything over 20mph, so all those multi storey car park scenes in the movies aren't just sound effects after all.  There was a reasonable surge of oomph and burble from an engine far, far away on the other side of a very lazy autobox.  The interior was a symphony in vinyl and formica.

It was a right old grin.  Go for it.

There used to be one of these that lived in the Speke area of Liverpool and I first encountered it when it pulled out from a concealed side road in front of me, he knew he had plenty of room to pull out safely but I thought it'd be a stretch limo so slammed on thinking there'd be at least another ten foot of it to emerge from the side road.

That'll be Geoff from Speke Hall Motors, or Herbert the hair dresser.

No... it's vulgar and hideous. Sorry.

I've been wanting a crown vic for ages, sadly the market over here for them dressed up as LAPD cop cars and taxis has kept the prices pretty high. Maybe I should start looking for one of these..

Posted

I prefer these in Crown Vic form but hey, I always wanted a Zephyr, not a Zodiac.

Until I spent some time in the USA, driving proper American cars, I didn't understand the appeal of them.

Now that I have wafted gently around, in the peaceful, squashy-velour comfiness of good honest Yank motors I can't be arsed with the smug, thrusting "sport saloon" ambience of upmarket Euro-tin.

Watching american cop shows I noticed that there is'nt much gets away from a crown vic.

Even Moscow police use them.

I thought that was half the appeal TBH.

When I lived in Green Bay, Wisconsin, I managed to write off one of these. It wasn't mine - I was just borrowing it for the day - so there was an awkward conversation when I got back.

Happy days.

Watch the windscreen wipers, because if they fail during a heavy rainstorm you might not be able to see, resulting in you hesitating long enough to be driven into by a massive pickup truck.
