On the subject of Anadols (previous page), I was reading the my Jan 1968 issue of WHEELS and in the NZ news section, was reminded that a Kiwi tried to launch New Zealand's first national car back then, the Anziel Nova, which seemingly was a rebadged Reliant/Anadol (link to photo - can't attach the image):

Just while Anadols are being bandied about, here's a lightly modded A8-16 model I snapped a few years back - with just over 1000 built from '81 to '84, they're pretty scarce even in Turkey. If memory serves, didn't Sam Glover or someone from Practical Classics obtain a beige one of these and drive it back to blighty? Almost a touch of Marina to the rear styling, I reckon...

Saw a Suzuki Celerio yesterday. What an awful little contraption that is, it runs round on these little wheels that look like castors. I’ve just seen it costs seven and a half thousand pounds!!! Fuck me that’s a lot. I’d no sooner buy 25,000 chomps or something secondhand.

 

Edit: I’ve just read the road test on that and the Viva, the writer has tried to be really positive about them both. I wouldn’t. I’d have just said they’re both wank.

I have a long-abiding affection for the Datsun U620, which was effectively a pick-up converted into a saloon car so it could be converted back into a pick-up again. Genius.

Actually, thinking about it I wouldn't be surprised if there was some sort of tax-dodge reason behind it, rather like the ROI proclivity for developing van versions of all manner of surprising and unsuitable vehicles (Toyota Celica 'van', anyone??)

Anadol A8s were fitted with the 1.6 Pinto engine (sourced through Otosan's Ford assembly division - confusingly, Otosan started by importing Fords way back in the 1920s, then assembling CKD kits, before branching out into manufacturing home-grown fibreglass cars under the Anadol brand in 1966, while building a range of Fords alongside)  so I'll assume it's a nod to that. Probably more street cred than Otosan, though I'd guess that whoever owns this prime piece of Turkish shite truly loves it if they've done so much work to it. Well, either that or the owner's bought a "memorabilia" listed Mk2 Escort VIN to glue in...

Here's a good 'un, 2005, drive and leafs at the back just like a real car, 800cc carby engine. What's the catch? Horn wasn't reliable. Only 600 made, the Adam Revo. Crafty Vauxhall, nicking it's name and good looks.

The more you look, the worse it gets.  Which is quite an achievement really.  It took me a while to see the weird placement of seams on the steering wheel after the surprise of the centre console.  Then there's the extra panels for the controls that sit in trimmed panels of their own than don't line up with anything.  The instrument binnacle is wandering off, a feature never before attempted on a dashboard of any car.  I have no idea what the big black... vents?  speaker grilles?  are in the top of the centre console.  Is... is that the handbrake where you'd like your left leg to be?

 

It's amazing, it really is.  It's all so strange!

11 years ago I saw one of these in a store shed in Deyang Boiler Factory . It was laid up and had bits of old lathe dumped on it. Sadly that factory was badly damaged in the earthquake that destroyed a lot of Sichuan. I thought it was a home-made job on an ex-bigwig's Audi, but HongQi are makers of limos and luxury cars for the bigwigs. I should have taken a photo!

That Chevrolet Nova is a E80/82 Corolla Liftback clearly a grey import in the same way the Chrylser Conquest is a Starion. Corolla is a bit of a way down from Novas of old!

The Sprint is a Mk1 Suzuki Swift - something something Geo Metro.

The Holden Nova, amongst other cars, was a creation of the Australian Governments' Button Car Plan of the 1980s and 1990s.

Essentially, it was government enforced badge engineering of Japanese cars (Toyotas and Nissans) as Australian cars (Holdens and Fords) in order to save the Australian car industry. Short term, it did help a little bit, but long term it did bugger all.
