I watch the prices of modern classics to know what I can't afford to buy next.

We've seen a few "have a missed the boat on" threads...Well here's some cars I reckon we will miss the boat on very soon and anyone with some spare nelson readies would do very well to buy now before prices sky rocket...

These are on Car and Classic which can be salty, but cars do sell on there, and when cars start selling at slightly cheeky prices we all know values of others will follow...

Very tidy and desirable 80's drug dealer shite for a shade unker 6k. I've seen slightly less nice ones go for 3k or so.

Don't laugh...Cortina 80s are now commanding strong money and Sierras are going the same way. Scene tax innit? Well it ain't gonna depreciate. Yours for just under £700.

How long before these come out of Shite Vally? £1200 for a very tidy one with a great spec.

Can we rely on these as being copper-bottomed investments, Quentin*?

*other Quentins are available, who may have examples of the above automobiles for sale, with all scratches round the odometers

The Mondeo's got to be a fairly safe bet, and I'm constantly supported that mk3/4 Escorts still seem to be fairly cheap.

Not sure about Mondeos, more likely the Ka given likely rarity value. But XM possibly, even though it's made of Peugeot - it's the last hydraulic big Citroen (C5 very watered down). I think the hatch is looking better every day, as usual the original ones look sweetest - as if they could have been made by people who made CXs, not 307s.

I thought XJS values had been climbing steadily for the last five years or so - someone I sing with was selling their olive green 3.6 manual three years ago and I knew I should have bought it at the offered £1500, it was very tidy. I think he sold it for a grand more.

I'm not sure about Mondeos going up in value, I reckon it'll follow the Ford Corsair rather than the Cortina, expcept maybe for the ST220s.

I vote for the Subaru Impreza.  I know very little about these, but it's got the rally success of the Mk1 Escort, the chav appeal of the Mk2 Escort, the performance of a 3 litre Capri and the "did you spill my pint?" attitude of a Granada coupe.  Plenty won't make it in the next couple of years so a late 1990s one that's unmessed with should be worth a packet in the near future.

Xsara Picasso gets my vote.

Horrible, unloved like the Ami, tuck one away for a decade and it will be worth its weight in...

XMs are very much on the cusp, which is why I thought I'd better get one ASAP. Funnily enough, friends have been commenting that it's a car that seems to look better and better.

I agree with Mondeos too. Already, pre-facelift ones seem rather rare. The facelift ruined the looks so as is often the case, expect some Mk1 tax. Mk3 Granadas must be getting close to a price hike too.

The bloke in the garage next to mine had a Corsair for sale, and couldn't shift it, even in three figures.

I'm no expert, but I can't see Mondeo's ever being valuable soon, look at mk1 Cavaliers, you'd be waiting a long time if you wanted to invest and see any return.

Not sure about Impreza's, but who would've thought that about Escorts? I think it really takes 5 years for a car to go from banger status to classic. I bought a slightly* rusty BMW 2002Tii with Turbo bodykit for £250 in 2006, and could've had an on the road 'replica' for £800. Within two years those 2002's had doubled or tripled in price and they're constantly going up now. It's as if 'Retro' and 'Classic' are two different categories, where classic is 'old' and retro is 'old and cool'.

I think big engined cars have totally lost out in a way thanks to petrol prices.

E36 318is and 318ti. Currently available for pocket money, get a clean standard one and watch prices go the way of the E30.

This effect will be compounded by the fact the e46 is pretty hateful all round.

Give it 40 or 50 years and these'll be worth nearly as much as you paid for a 10 year old example.

^ Definitely, although prices are already well & truly on the up for tidy V6 Calibras, especially early ones... mine cost less than a quarter of what they're advertised for nowadays.

A couple of other definites are the Ford Puma and the MR2 mk 2. Available for bridge money now, but their looks alone guarantee future classic status.

Agree with some of the above, the XM has been too cheap for too long so most have died of apathy/neglect, last of the 'proper' Cits so will be worth something. This will filter down to Xantia's too as XM's are rare anyway, Xant's are more numerous still. (Fancy one myself).

The original Ford Ka is another that despite being simple & mass produced is also unique enough to be desirable in a few years, again, the trouble will be finding one that hasn't rotted to buggery as they do that rather well. To this end, I think decent Pug 106's will also be worth money (the Rallye & GTi's already do), another quick, fun, simple car that people will have fond memories of as their first cars.

The 205 GTi is a better choice than an equivilent Golf, way less rust and more fun (no VW cool-tax either!), values of these have really gone up recently for unmolested ones which were hard to find two years ago when I got mine.

The other obvious candidate is the Mk1 MX5, again values of the really good ones are rising fast now and have a long way to go too as the rusty ones get scrapped so supply & demand takes over. (Got mine last year after 18 months of searching through over-described examples).

Any performance Ford will definately be worth keeping as history has shown us - these will always be in demand. Again their large numbers rapidly thinned by neglect and being wrecked.

Probably the same will be true of any hot hatch from the 80's & 90's, esp the rarer ones like the R5 Turbos and original Clio Williams or their mental V6 version.

Spooky post RR:

1: My first GTi was black 1.6 like this

2: My current GTi is white like the T16 in the reflection

3: Your location is the town I grew up in!

Is it just me, or are Metros seriously on the rise?

Have noticed this, we are getting to the point were only the OMFGMINTCONCOURS ones are left

So how long do we all think it will take for my 1996 Almera GX will take to appreciate in value? Presumably several centuries after all the oil has run out?

Always quite fancied one of these for some reason, in spite of them being pretty much the most useless people carrier ever conceived (no rear doors, thirsty 1.8 petrol engine). In fact it's not in spite of that it's because of that I want one.

Agree that early Mondeos will get scene taxed to the hilt. A K-Reg Si or well specced Ghia will probably fetch a decent sum before long. Sticking with Ford (as they are always a safe bet) now would be a good time to take good care of a Streetka or Puma as most of them will rot away before they start to get any degree of desirability. Not many will survive to be classics.

Was there a V6 with an RS bodykit? I know the mk2 had the ST24 but was there a mk1 equivalent?

That's another one to watch - ST200 and mk3 ST220 bound to fetch daft money at some point
