I want a V8 for 1500 quid, but not too bling, not too red, not too big, not too small, not too Rover, not too Japanish, not too yank, not too Jag, not too Bulgarian, not too rusty, not too pristine, with a good OMGMPG, that I can insure and park in Peepoop town centre.

Holy shit.

Did the Moon car company do an OnnaStick special edition V8?

Sure that was the colour you'd want it to be.

I've had the equivalent Buick with a V6, so I can say that will be a very nice place to sit.  It's way overpriced though for a car with no t&t that's been sitting...

Oh FFS. I was only thinking last night that I'd really like an SEC W126 V8 thing. They are AWESOME. Terrifyingly refined. Bugger off and get your own ideas!

Mind you, like most Merc V8s, they're a bit plain. I suspect a Lexarse is the same. Personally, I do prefer my V8s a bit more rorty. That probably means a Rover V8 and they don't get much cheaper than in a clapped-out Disco.

Merc V8 has to be the answer here. I'm sure a Rover or Yank V8 will be fun, but you just know they'll cause you a shit load of grief in no time at all, especially the former.

If you go for the Lexus then you HAVE to fit Corsa rear lights to it. :-)

At least with the rover you can rebuild it if it goes Pete Tong.

Not so if you buy a jap / german - parts far too expensive.

You could probably get a P6 / SD1 within budget but it may be about as much fun as Alex Salmond.

A lot of 70's american V8 engines are strangled by emissions gear.

The last lincoln continental's had the 460 cubic inch motor that put out around 170 hp with the emissions stuff.

I had an SD1 with an 8.13:1 compression lump out of a range rover.

Lots of torque but not much power.

Another thing with the rover, an engine may go through several pairs of hands during it's life and may have been "rebuilt" by somebody with not much skill / money in their outside shithouse using an Argos tool kit. I have seen a few of these quality rebuilds when I was in the SD1 club.

What you have there is a Dollywobbler Merc.

No, what I have is a Dollywobbler Merc.  Insufficient cylinderage for your purposes, though...

....you could knit a new wiring loom with your left foot on the way home while MrsR prepares some arsenic tea in the spacious kitchen

It has "central hemlocking", then...?

Is it possible to "undo" the Yank emission stragleholds?

Yes it absolutely is, just find a local small garage with a bloke who knows about American cars, and preferably is a member of one of the clubs.  You'll know you're in the right place when you see a 70s Firebird and a Chevy pickup project....

I don't think Merc V8s lack rortiness... I had an AMG exhaust on my SL500 and it sounded bloody lovely, throbby and deep but screamed when the revs got up there. Also, I don't think Merc v8s are prone to inreliability, I had an SE380 (lhd!) with about 400.000 kms on it and it was fab. One of the cams had worn a lobe off (no idea why and nor did anyone else) but I bought a complete engine and box for peanuts (no one wants them s/h as they are so reliable!) and swapped one cam and the followers one evening after work. Dead easy to work on. I ran that car for years as a smoker and never had the slightest bother with it - totally reliable.

I trust old Mercs mechanically completely. I had one old 230E snap its camchain but that was total neglect and again, it was an easy repair (pricey though with loads of bent valves! Strangely, MB were the cheapest for parts for that job?) and all the V8s I've had have been great, and I've loads over the years from an old 350se to my R230  500. All got loads of character/torque/power.

But, if I was after a shitter V8 on a budget, I'd get a Lexus! Didn't they used to warrant the ehgines for 500K if they had a full  Lexus history?
