Mk3 Transit coachbuilt minibus for sale

Afternoon chaps,

Fleet replacement abounds up here at my place of work so we're shifting on a load of buses we've no use for now. Which brings me to this sassy little number, a 1994 Chassis Developments bodied Ford Transit 190D which for the duration of it's stay here was christened The Popemobile.

First registered 20/09/94, date of build on the body is 09/89 and Certificate of Initial Fitness issued 21/09/89. Class 6 MOT expires 11/12/14, tax is up 30/11/14. As it currently stands the mileage is believed to be genuine at 48078 but the vehicle is still in use on a daily school run. Three previous owners (IIRC we're only it's second PSV owner but Adam Floyd may be able to confirm?). 2.5Di engine, four speed manual gearbox, no power steering, 16 belted high-backed seats, electric powered passenger door and a snazzy sliding cab door. It has a slight exhaust blow and one torn seat but otherwise seems to be pretty decent. We've had it four years or so but it's now surplus to requirements and is available immediately. Dunno if any of you chaps are looking for a minibus to convert to a motorhome (Edd?) or if Fred Transit has gone modern enough for this.

Unfortunately I am rooked or I'd have this myself, but before it hits ebay I've been given the opporchancity of offering it here for... £500. No vat, driveaway price. It's a firm price so not up for negotation, and it's in Renfrew, PA4 8TA (approximately 5 minutes from Glasgow Airport/10 minutes from Glasgow Central Station). I've got five motors to list on ebay so I'll give this one a few days before throwing it on there.

Drop me a PM. Ta!

Megabarg I reckon. 500 notes for that seems ridiculously cheap to me.

I'm already towing a genny otherwise I'd be A framing this behind the Dennis back home.

Four Speed? I bet that's quick?

It's happy about 55-ish, but it'll do a noisy and drafty 60 without complaint. It's really not the worst when you get past the looks...

Do you need a PSV licence to use this privately?

Errr... not entirely sure! It's licensed as a PSV (£165/year tax) but it wouldn't be difficult to reclass it as a private 16-seater should your license allow it. Or drop it to an 8-seater. Or convert it to a van. It doesn't have a tachograph either now I think about it.

Technically over 9 seats (including driver) so PSV required. Just take out the bad seats and use it as an 8. Tacho not needed at the moment as its used on a regular service.

Ideal camper fodder this. Ideal size, under 7.5 tonnes so can drive on a car licence and nice and boxy so relatively easy to convert. Loose the folding door and replace with a more 'camper' like door and paint it beige and it wouldn't stand out too much at you local camp site either*.

So tempting.

By the way, what else is for sale? anything tempting bus wise?

That's brilliant!

Sell it to Samba_S to live in.

Sorry, I see you already had that idea.

Got too many kids to fit in your Picasso?  Autoshite has the answer!

For £500 that seems like megabargs.  I hope it finds a loving new home, unfortunately that cannot be me.

Fuck me, that's a right bargain. Sadly my insurance won't let me have mini buses so I can't buy it, which is a right pisser as I'd be all over that.

If that doesn't make at least 50% more on eBay I'll show my not inconsiderable arse in Burton's window.

Surely something this fine must be deserving of a FredTransit backed career in Hollywood or at least Hollyoaks.

Been thinking about doing a camper conversion for a while, but in typical lazy git mode never looked into anything.

Would I be able to drive this on a "standard" driving licence (Passed in 1989) or would additional "qualifications" be needed.

I'd be removing all of the seats except the front row and the drivers seat. would this then need to be reclassified and retested or would the current MOT and Tax still be valid.

Goes off to get an Insurance quote and check Insurance costs.

Cheers

Is there some sort of (stupid) rule where anything more than 15 seats means some sort of extra (driving) test is required, or have I just dreamt that? There doesn't appear to be a tacho fitted, so I'd imagine it's 3.5 tonnes gross so a 1989 licence would be fine, unless the 16 seats knackers things up?

Anyhow, surely it'd be a pretty straightforward camper conversion, you could score a cheap, damp ridden caravan for next to eff all and raid it for the interior.

Just been looking on the DVLA website regarding what's needed to class it as a campervan.

Seems to just need a bed, a cupboard, some seats, a table and something to cook with. Which can be a microwave? Obviously everything has to be bolted down, but seems fairly basic.

Going to ring the DVLA tomorrow and have a chat.

Cheers

You don't need PSV if it's not being used for hire and reward though. Number of seats might be an issue for those who passed their test after Jan 97 (without the D1 category) depending on gross weight of the bus. If it's less than 3.5 tons, it's ok.

Oh, and I'd absolutely love this! I quite fancy a mobile office. Fortunately for Mrs DW, I have no money.

As long as it's not for hire or reward, you can drive a vehicle with up to 16 seats on a car licence.

To drive for hire or reward, you need a D1 category licence (although anyone who passed their test before 1997 will have that automatically anyway).

Lovely vehicle, by the way. I'd definitely hit that, under different circumstances.
