James Mays Cars of the People

I thought it was quite good. It's the only new BBC thing I've watched for ages.

Talking of the Sprinter/Transit mix up, last week they showed a photo of a Moskvitch when chatting about Ladas/Fiat 124s being made in loads of different countries.

Hmmm. Yet another deliberate tactic to get the car geeks talking about the show? Personally, I'm starting to think that Downton Abbey/water bottle thing was just a free PR conspiracy. I'm still not going to watch it.

The remit of the BBC is to inform, educate and entertain. Informing and educating has taken a back foot to entertainment for many years now.

The worse bit about the program is all the fucking moaning about the show all over the forums and Facebook afterwards.

I don't know. I find it infinitely more entertaining to read this shit than watch lame car programs on TV. Takes up less of my time too.

It really does feel as if this was designed for Clarkson, the non TG stuff that James May has done has been excellent (the toy progs and the booze trips with Oz Clarke).  I generally enjoyed it, but the obsession with smashing things up, just feels childish. May is a good presenter, but he lacks the ability of Tim Hunken or the late Fred 'Did yer like that?' Dibnah to be genuinely enthusiastic and spontaneous in front of the camera.

Just to prove that the BBC can do factual programming I watched "Jet! When Britain ruled the skies", excellent stuff. But it was narrated rather than presented, which really does make a difference. No presenter to hog the camera and get in the way.

At the beginning of the programme it had the top gear logo so it is created by them. I quite enjoyed them to be honest.

The non TG stuff that Clarkson has done has been excellent too, I'd go as far as to say better than James May's stuff. Clarkson is a decent journalist, he's just found that having opinions for money and pissing around pays better.

I'd agree with that. Clarkson has done some truly excellent non-car stuff. Mind you, so has May. Hammond presented a silly game show in a very irritating way.

Let's not forget that thing Hammond did about Bond cars. It was excellently done, yes there was a little silliness, but that aside it was thoroughly enjoyable. Similar vein to this, really. Probably the only decent thing Hammond ever did (well, Brainiac was okay).

I honestly don't think the 'furore' is anything like as bad as some are making out. In actual fact I'd honestly liken it to the sort of campaigns by Britain First, where it's they themselves who are bigging it and indeed themselves up.

All it takes is a few 'angry from Manchester' types to drone on about people making mountains out of molehills and producing stupid pictures etc and before you know it a few simpletons start believing everything they read, adding their take on it and blowing it out of proportion. Yes, of course some people are getting worked up about destroying cars (or whatever TG and May are doing) but I absolutely 100% believe the biggest hysteria campaign has come from the actual fans of the programme.

It sort of reminds me a bit of Malcom McLaren's Sex Pistols campaign, a superb bit of clever advertising really.

I enjoyed it. Sue me.

Any programme that manages to coherently display a VdP 1300, a Daihatsu Midget, Geinoh Yamashirogumi and the Pixies in one sitting is alright by me.

The WW2 programmes Clarkson did were great. Proving TG is just a big act.

The greatest raid of all is brilliant.

Unfortunately it celebrates blowing up some dock gates. No doubt the forum for dock gates went mental about that.

The Golf????

Fuck riiiiiiight off.

Aye. If I had a brick to hand I'd have put it through the telly at that point.

Posted

I enjoyed it highly, it was really cool to see some out of the ordinary cars and Kei cars on the telly. As for the cars getting wrecked, they had to gain the attention of casual viewers somehow and without them the show probably wouldn't have been made.

Oh no, has this just been on again? cue another 5 pages of arguing.

I wouldnt normally comment on TG stuff, but to say the Golf is the only car everyone needs is beyond the pall.

I was hoping they'd drop pianos on the Countach and 911, or at least the Crappi.

I am disappoint.

I wanted the 205 GTi more than that 911 Turbo.

Last of the series I think Mr Boll. Great programme. Golf gushing aside. And I didn't like some other bits. But some bits were good weren't they? Yeah, but some bits really weren't. What the hell do you know? Freak.

As he was walking away from the red GLOF at the end, I was waiting for a musical instrument to descend...

I didn't watch it at all because I couldn't be bothered. May and Clarkson do other documentaries very well though, like that series on inventions that changed the world that Clarkson did which was both entertaining and informative.

Posted

I thought it was quite a good series to be honest,

But it did come across very sponsored by Volkwagen.

And that's from someone who doesn't mind more than the odd VAG product (minus pineapple and fake rusty bits)

I enjoyed it. There.

As far as the Golf love goes, I don't mind 'em and for 95% of the population who aren't that into cars, a Golf probably is all the car they need (but then so would be a Focus / Ceed / Megane / whatever else at the same size) its just that VW market them better.
