Cavcraft Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Read it and weep, suckers... Collected this evening with help from (watering can carrying) son. It's superbly miserable, those the sun roof, power steering and central locking have poshed it up a bit.Fuel gauge doesn't work, some panic in Wallasey until we found a garage and lobbed a ten spot in. It wasn't exactly quick but doesn't half go through the gears and will happily maintain motorway speeds and perhaps* some more on top.Problems: intermittent wipers don't actually work, o/s/r light is 157 times brighter than the n/s, aerial doesn't seem to work, weather seal on driver's door must have been eaten by a hungry lion, it's got nasty wheel trims, central plays up he told me and there is that familiar smell of burning oil. Obviously I didn't do any checks on it whatsoever, I just handed him the money, signed the V5 and fucked off. The weekend will tell me what it's really like, wish me luck. 1.4! saucedoctor, HMC, RobT and 26 others 29
Hertz Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Magic Darts. Was this from the ebay tat thread? Great Purchase! Cavcraft 1
Jim Bergerac Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Appeallingly dire so well bought. Points off for being an L rather than the hyper-mingebag base spec, though. ProgRocker and Cavcraft 2
Cavcraft Posted February 17, 2014 Author Posted February 17, 2014 Aye, that's the badger. It was also for sale on Retro-Rides.
saucedoctor Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Lord Sward would've had that number plate off you until recently, Cav. Jim Bergerac and Cavcraft 2
scruff Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Shitetacular! A good mate of mine had one just like that when we were at college, it was only 10 years old so dead posh, then when he left college it became his works van. I can confirm these are GR8 for carrying approx 1/2 a ton of turf - and will wheelspin lots when attempting to tow a broken Series 3 Landrover on a ifor Williams trailer. Cavcraft, saucedoctor and M'coli 3
phil_lihp Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 That looks as joyful as a wet weekend in Slough. Well done! A good wash and a little tlc should work wonders. Cavcraft 1
philibusmo Posted February 17, 2014 Posted February 17, 2014 Grimmer than a grim thing in Grimsby. By that measure I would say that you have made an excellent purchase. GRIM. Cavcraft and chaseracer 2
KruJoe Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 YES! The legendary* 1389cc Mk3 Cav. Billy U R winnar. cms206 and Cavcraft 2
Lord Sterling Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Well, cut my beard with an old biscuit tin! A 1398cc Cavalier, that looks marvellously grim. I bets its pretty sparse inside too, deviod of anything resembling 'toys' and full of blanking plates? Surely though, this must be only 2nd to the even grimmer 1.3 Montego. Now thats a car I REALLY want try I wonder what that fat company Cavalier driving creep from the A to B documentary would make of this? Cavcraft and ProgRocker 2
Lord Sterling Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Oh yeah, and we want MOAR photos. Please. Cavcraft 1
stuboy Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 old collegue had one and went really well till some fool crashed into it at a crossing Cavcraft 1
Jim Bell Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Only Roundheads don't love Cavaliers. And I'm no Roundhead. Approved! cms206 and Cavcraft 2
barefoot Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 How do these compare to the mk 2 version (of which I haven some experience)?
CreepingJesus Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Followed an M-reg Expression onto the motorway last night, reminiscing about Cavs past. I'm amazed there were any 1.4s to find!
Cavcraft Posted February 18, 2014 Author Posted February 18, 2014 How do these compare to the mk 2 version (of which I haven some experience)?I think they lost a bit of the character of the Mk2, but they are less sort of wooden feeling, the interior plastics are nicer to feel and look at and they were definately a leap forward. Still have a soft spot for the Mk2 and not knocking them, it's just the Mk3 is the better car imho. Came to work in it this morning and have to say I was surprised how quick it was, wellying through the gears saw an increase in engine roar and a decent turn of speed. Only noticeably a bit slow from 60+mph where nothbing seems to happen for an age, then it starts gathering momentum. Jim Bell, M'coli and cms206 3
fordperv Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 I think the only thing that can trump a cav 1.4 for grimness is a 1.3 sierra but I think chances are very slim getting one of those
Grundig Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Problems: intermittent wipers don't actually work ... Don't work or do work, then don't, then do, then don't ??? A place I worked had a mid range one of these new in a sort of washed out metallic beige vulgalour 1
Partridge Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 NOW you change your user name? Well bought, Piers!
theorganist Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Very nice, I remember a guy at church having a red J reg 1.4 Cavalier as a company car. I had a lift in it once and it seemed pretty nippy, her certainly thought it was quick enough. I think what beats the 1.3/1.4 Cavalier and the 1.3 Montego for misery though would have to be a 1.3 Sierra! Even the 1.6 wasn't that quick, well the ones I had weren't! fordperv 1
Lacquer Peel Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 It's not miserable enough. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/vauxhall-corsa-1-0-engine-/261400543609 fordperv 1
retrogeezer Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 without trying to teach you to suck eggs Billy, sounds like the stop/tail bulb is in the holder the wrong way round, just needs taking out and turning 180 degrees.I hope I get to see this before it is sold on. Cavcraft 1
Mr Lobster Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Grim. But in a good way. Mandatory petrol station shot included is pleasing! Cavcraft 1
hairnet Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 when i first passed me test i got the job of borrowing one of the managers h reg new mk4 orion to go and get the lunches in one of the big managaers got a kinda of demotion - he was retiring soon and took on running our office as it was easier on the same dosh as running the company and he went and down sized froma jag to (really) one of these as a company car same colour spec (has it the steering wheel with the vaux badge at the bottom of the spoke??) but g reg

Only noticeably a bit slow from 60+That sounds good to me, I had a 1.3 mk2 and that was very similar. Lots of relatively low speed fun. Not a deal of top end but would cruise at 80 all day once you got it there. The sort of car you can hammer about in without fear of serious points or license loss. M'coli 1
greengartside Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 Pez station shot! Fantastic purchase, I R WEL JELZ. Is it a carb model? The intermittent wiper fault is definitely the relay as I've found that with a couple of Cavs I've worked on in the past. Doesn't look like it's been far in its life with that LG registration. 175/10. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Cavcraft 1
Bren Posted February 18, 2014 Posted February 18, 2014 An ex work colleague bought a H plate one an eternity ago. He drove around in it for two years thinking it was a 1600 - it was a 1400.
