So, just sitting here planning the collection of my £73 Suzuki Alto.

Tools packed, prayer mat packed, tickets booked, insurance / breakdown cover sorted.

Leaving Essex at 9.28am and plan to arrive in Walsall by 1pm.

So, virtual bets as to which town I'll break down closest to one the way back?

Live(ish) updates throughout tomorrow!

Cov.

My geography is weak

The reg is a nanagram of DARN 306, so I'm gonna have a fiver on the side on a light collision with a gaelic hatchback.

Looking forward to watching this unfold. Hopefully the collection tale, not the car...

I have no doubt whatsoever that it'll make it back without any problems.

Eventually.

Suicide or engaging 2nd gear, which will happen first?

Milton Keynes.

(Assuming some sort of M1-M6 kind of route)

Also, by MK you'll have grown tired of looking at the wheelnuts of lorries overtaking you so the breakdown will be a blessed relief.

Mind the dog poo. Oh, wrong collection.

Hmm, anywhere with a A in the name. Possibly but hopefully not.

Good luck! How's the 406 by the way?

I predict smug confidence till somewhere near Kilsby whereupon catastrophic electrical failure will cause much grinding of the teeth.

I reckon the Black Cat roundabout is as far as you'll get. Slap bang in the middle of rush-hour. Still, you've got the Volvo breakers yard up the street. I'd shove the Alto in the back of one of them and drive it home.

With just 40 horses and 2 gears, I think you'll get bored by the time you get to Coventry, park it there and get the train home.

With more manipulation of the number plate we can get something that totally fails to be 'dog arse'.

2 gears and not many horses, I hope you're not planning on doing the motorway all the way home. If you do your ears will be ringing and you'll be constantly shitting yourself for fear of getting crushed by everything around you.

Good luck, and if I was you I'd take an atlas to plan A roads home

I hate to shatter any kind of illusion but these are shit, and I've owned a 4 speeder so god knows what a auto will be like.

There's only one reason a car like this is worth £73 and mine was only £130!

Like skattrd just said avoid any kind of motorway if you value your life, and I'm deadly serious too.

Posted

I will keep you all posted of my heroic attempt at tat recovery tomorrow, I promise. I intend to avoid the M1, but doubt I can steer clear of the M6 completely. I'll go across the A414 and down the M11.

Just found out my breakdown cover isn't all it is cracked up to be, so might have to pull out a plan 'B' on that.

Jeez. What is it with you guys? I seem to cope with a 29bhp car made out of tin foil with an official top speed of less than the motorway speed limit, though frankly it isn't anywhere near as scary as driving a Mini on a motorway, and I've survived a fair amount of that too. As long as you can get a cruise on of more than 56mph, you can at least not upset the truck drivers but keep out of the way of the fast guys in lane three.

Posted

I've done a 280 mile journey in a car with 1972 tyres that turned out to have 37bhp on a dyno - and I'm a terrible driver who once got confused by a sliding door.

Make sure your cover's up to scratch, leave A LOT of time to get home, and let us know how you get on.

easy out onto a5 then along south as far as needed then east

easy

would NOT be mway itll be screaming and likely implode...........

It will be fine. I know truck etiquette so will try not to piss off the lorry drivers too much.

I see your point Dollyz and your quite right of course but I still wouldn't recommend driving one on any kind of fast road, I remember being over takin by two lorries in mine on the A14 and that was the first time I've felt dangerously vulnerable in a car, especially as the lorries started to suck me under! God knows what it must be like to drive a bubblecar on the motorway!

Good luck with shite collecting.

If you do, drop it off at 'Newbold Terrace' in Leamington and I'll take it. :)
